After shock wins in the Qualifying and Preliminary final against the South Australian Teams, the magpies made it into the Grand Final against Brisbane. The contest was proposed as a Victorian Team against the Interstate Team (with an unfair salary cap) and the Victorian Sports Minister, Justin Madden, an old Carlton player, implored all Victorians to barrack for the "Pies". The weather was terrible with a maximum temperature of 9 degrees C and hail predicted. The game was tight with the scores fluctuating all day. In the end the Lions ran out 9 point winners. Nathan Buckley won the Norm Smith Medal for Best on the Ground.

The team line up for the 2002 Grand Final was

Backs Ben Johnson Simon Prestigiacomo James Clement

Half Backs Ryan Lonie Shane Waklin Jarrod Molloy

Centre Tarkyn Lockyer Nathan Buckley (c) Leon Davis

Half Forwards Rupert Betharis Anthony Rocca Scott Burns

Full Forward Alan Didak Chris Tarrant Josh Fraser

Followers Steven McKee Shane O'Bree Paul Licuria

Interchange Nick Davis Glenn Freeborn Heath Scotland

Carl Steinford

An idea proposed on SEN today, where they compared a past losing geelong grand final team to the cats team of this year.
So. How would we stand? are we ready for a tilt? or have some of the players with finals experience aged a bit?
I put the 2002 team up, not 2003, because irrespective of the teams selected- it was 2002 with the closest result.

I've read some posts here proposing the question are we good enough? or "are we rubish". But, considering the introduction to the article (above)- we were outsiders in 2002. Licca's amazing game V's Port set the stage. Anything can happen in finals.
I reckon we are better (certainly on paper)!! Your thoughts?Carn the Pies!!

Bearing in mind I have no particular foe in mind to play this team out would be:
Lonie, Wakelin (hate to do it), Malloy, Betharis, Tarrant, Mckee, Davis (Pizza eating type), Freeborn, Scotland, Steinford.
In would be:
O Brien, Shaw, Shaw, Thomas, Cloke, Pendlebury, Maxwell, Swan, Medhurst and Goldsack.

Some might say lacks height but can we really trust the back up rucks consistency? Total hypothetical so didn't bother to give them positions although some are obvious. Have gained real class with Swan, Pendlebury, Thomas and Heater but with Didak out of form ATM, Buckley and Clement ageing and Leon and R Shaw still yet to perform in a GF are we really better, or just the same?

He couldn't get used to the rucking rules introduced in 03 and 04.

Absolutely correct, changes to the ruck rules made several ruckman completely un-playable ending their carreers....the rules committee rarely takes into account the ramifications when formulating their next...farcical rule change...Bartlett should just go back to Richmond and get his greasey little fingers out of the rule book...

Bet you can't guess I don't like Bartlett...little s**t stole our precious.

How were Collingwood situated on the ladder at the end of round 15 in 2002???

Which teams did we have to play and where in the run homein 2002???

How many walk-up start players were un-available for a minimum of 6 games in the first 15 rounds of 2002???

Just want to know how we stand this year as opposed to 2002.

2002 was a great year and this year may well be again.

We were 10-5 but we only won 3 of the last 7. I remember thinking we had little hope of doing anything during the finals series and then suddenly we were on fire.

Ladder at the end of rnd 15:
1 PORT ADELAIDE
2 BRISBANE
3 COLLINGWOOD
4 ADELAIDE
5 MELBOURNE
6 GEELONG
7 WEST COAST
8 ESSENDON
9 KANGAROOS
10 HAWTHORN
11 WESTERN BULLDOGS
12 FREMANTLE
13 SYDNEY
14 RICHMOND
15 ST KILDA
16 CARLTON

Edit: 13 wins won't get us anywhere near the top 4 this year.

The one thing we may have on 02 this year is that there are more vic teams looking like finishing top 4 so if they can hang on and win 5 of the next 7 may be easier, although this is a big ask.

I still have vague memories,of the end of the home and away season of 2002.
I can remember us playing the bulldogs,we had a young list and i knew something was up after half time of that game.
We STOPPED ! literally, didn't play the game well at all.
I knew we had 4th position stiched up,so we just dropped that game, then i knew something was brewing for the next week when we were to meet Port Adelaide.I remember going to a mate's to watch the game pies vs port and all the commentarty was all about how we were a young side, and it was a formality that we were goping to get smashed.
Yeah,at that point i had this feeling that we were going to smash port and we did the rest is history
This current side plays with the same intensity as the 2002 side ,that's why i reckon we may do something this year.Perfect if we can and what a way to send Buckley off.
If we made the grand fianl this year, doesn't matter who we met, don't you think we would win it for him ? F...n oath we would.

We were playing crap at the end of the 2002 year, I remember losing to the Bulldogs and only just beating the Saints (to get us a spot in the top 4)

Then all of a sudden finals came along and we started playing awesome

Back then it was No Buckley No Pies... not anymore

So technically we are travelling better this year...We have better depth and we have a better draw for the run home..

I like our chances this year and still wouldn't try to compare 2002 against 2007 ( if we lose the GF by 9 points then they are on a par)

Which teams did we have to play and where in the run homein 2002???

Rnd 15 - Cats - L
Rnd 16 - Rich - W
Rnd 17 - WCE - L
Rnd 18 - Carl - W
Rnd 19 - Haw - L
Rnd 20 - Ess - L
Rnd 21 - StK - W
Rnd 22 - WB - L

How many walk-up start players were un-available for a minimum of 6 games in the first 15 rounds of 2002???

Molloy played only seven games for the season.

O'Bree missed the first five weeks with a hamstring which dogged him all year.

Apart from that, we were ok. Nick Davis had OP, btw.

It would be great to finish in the top four this year of all years. The likelyhood of playing another Vic team at the MCG is high. This year is very even and it's a great chance for us. On our day we can beat any team. Lets hope we have at least 24-26 fit players to choose from, come the business end.

2007 is much better than 2002 and it's not even close. 2002 did have the #5 in full-flight though, whereas now... :(.

The only reason we ever got so close is that in the 01-03 years you had Brisbane who was a great team, and 15 other teams ranging in mediocrity. PA was decent, but kept having players injured if I recall correctly.

It's a much stronger, and more even competition atm. And that's a good thing I think. Actually, I'm still amazed we ever made a GF with Steinford, Freeborn and McKee on the list.

The trio never got the credit they deserved.

Freeborn was ultra consistent, had great disposal, could tag, provide rebound off HB, win his own ball in the midfield or boot a goal or two in attack. Ice cool under the pump and a finals performer.

Stunner was one of the main reasons why 2002 was what it was. He was lionhearted in the ruck.

Steinfort was effectively pushed out when Woewodin arrived and O'Bree returned from injury. Always handy, played tough and could win the ball. Good when the going was tough, too.
