I think Gary's younger brother, Nathan Ablett will wear the #5 jumper if he is recruited to Geelong. (which is likely)

I wonder if Paul Chambers will take over Menchsy's cult following now he has been given the famous #31 jumper?? :D

It might be a good Idea one son has the name the other has the number.

From my point of View Id like to see Steven King wear 5 if neither Gary or Nathan want to wear it.

I still remember that shot for goal after the siren he had down at Geelong to win the game against Sydney back in 1988... it looked for all money a goal & I remember jumping around to celebrate only to see it swing late and hit the post. :(

As jubjub said, they retired it for a year. The club approached Buddha and asked him if they could use the number again. From the article i read, he wasn't too impressed about it!

Kate :)

I don't see the point in retiring numbers....

Fair enough, Garry Hocking was a great player for the Geelong Football Club wearing the #32 jumper, but life goes on. It's not as if Garry 'Buddha' Hocking will be forgotton just because someone else is now wearing his old number.

I think Gary Jnr could have taken the #5, but it's up to him. He obvioulsy doesn't want the added pressure, which is fair enough. But you'd think one of the Ablett's will have it eventually, when they want it, and it will be unlucky for whoever misses out.

Maybe to make it fair if they both want it, none of them get it....??

And he's the player who could attract that kind of cult following! :D

I don't think Gary Jnr. wants it otherwise he'd be wearing the #5 this season.

He might not want it this season, I think he said he wants to establish himself as a footballer before he takes his father's old number. IMO it's a good idea as for now.
