Opening round brings few surprises as the cream quickly rises to the top. Cousins and Gardiner have announced there intentions early on as they fill the top 2 spots. Two time winner and the only winner of the BFWCPOTY, Ben Cousins leads the way after an inspired performance against the Dogs.

Last year the champion started slowly due to a niggling ankle injury but finished strong to take his second straight, not this year though as he starts with a blinder and says "catch me if you can"

Gardiner though with no preseason and no match fitness slips into second spot, certainly an ominous sign that with no preperation he can still be almost BOG. Chris Judd starts the year well in third after 4 goals and 25 touches, his last two years has seen him finish 4th and 5th so a top 3 finish from the Package seems likely .... winner? Quite possible.

Matera starts strong with 80 votes. Wouldnt think he could win it but im sure a top 5 finish is on his mind. Last years runner up, Chad Fletcher kicks off 04 with 62 votes. No doubt that Fletch will again be a contender this season.

As for some other usual suspects, Embers some how got 3 votes, Wirrpunda went voteless and Special K sat through suspension. No doubt some new challengers will arise this season also, Im expecting big years from Morrison, Braun, Jones, Chick and possibly a youngster or two could get amongst it like Lynch, Doogs, Sampi or Johnson?

What about a tip from everyone for the award this year? A lot of you guys are talking about Judd but IMO this season is Cuz's real chance at Charlie. He already has 3 in the bag and I dont think he will have any problems with taking out his 3rd successive BFWCPOTY award in a row.

I'll be very suprised if Cousins doesn't win the award for another year running. He'd have to have a serious injury or get rubbed out for 2 months for him to miss votes. (Touch wood)

i think this year will be Cuz's best to date and should score himself the charlie.

on other matters, i really think we all under estimate the value of Fido to our side. On the weekend, he was our only forward who looked even remotely dangerous for more than a quarter of footy.

He continually kicks bags of three or four which is amazing for a small forward. i think it's got to a stage where we are so used to him doing well that if he only kicks one or two, he's had a bad game. i think he's the best small forward in the game and reads the play as well as anyone else in the team.

Cuz, Juddy, Fletch, Gardy etc will always be the ones winning the awards and getting recognised as our best players, but i think Fido deserves a bit of a mention too.

(i know this kinda seems a bit out of the blue but i was talking to a friend about it today and been mulling over it all night.)

Well it's not like we ignore Fido. In 2002, the inaugral year, he finished 12th and last year 11th. But I think your right in a sense. Last year he finished behind Cousins, Gardiner, Judd, Kerr, Braun, Wirrpunda, Chick, Fletcher, Embley and Jones. But on the importance to the team last year I would have had him 3rd behind Cousins and Gardiner.

I reward him more than others I feel. But could only get two votes from me against the Dogs. Cuz was clearly BOG, Gardy kicked 3 and changed the game. Judd only had one less goal than Matera and also had 24 touches....so I though Matera was good for 4th.
