Only picked out the real obvious choices - there are a few others I'll be watching with interest.

That recent rule change is going to have more impact that I thought. Drum, Tyquin and Jordyn Burke all miss out now, which is a shame as KPP are so rare.

Thanks for that Goalden. Eddie Betts really impressed me in the Carnival game I saw on Fox Footy last year. Got a heap of it and has real pace. Definitely small but so were Rodan and Harvey when they were drafted.

As a North fan Jesse Smith was another one who interested me. Watched him closely in the TAC Cup GF and was very impressed. Hands in close were excellent and he looked to have good foot skills. For a third rounder, would have to be in the mix for a Father/Son pick, North's first for a very long time.

Eddie Betts certainly is shaping up as a top 20 pick IMO. Played well as a small forward and would be looking for more time in the midfield. A lightweight, reminds me of Andrew Krakouer (classy small lightweight goalsneak, gradually progressing to a midfield role)

GOALden Hawk, judging by your preview, is it fair to say there are alot more KPP than of recent years?

Sam Roberton (Calder) – 15 Jan 87, 191cm, 75kg. Tall but skinny key position who is the son of Graeme Robertson and nephew of Richmond great Jim Jess. Part of the AIS/AFL Academy after a good Under 16’s carnival last year.

Would richmond be able to draft him under the father son? That will be good if we can get him and Travis Cloke

He is the nephew of Jim Jess, not the son.

I think so, at least I really hope so because Hawthorn need a couple! Time will tell, but the move from end of June to end of April might make it a weaker draft. However, it will give guys like Drum an extra year to develop and make 2005 a very strong year.

wrennyboy - Graeme Robertson only played 53 games for the Tigers (and I think a few for Carlton?) so you can't get him under father-son. Although you would have under the old rule! :p

desie - Didn't mention Jesse Smith because if he is any good (which he is) North will take him.

PAP- yep, definitely still on for a brew!

What type of player did he turn out to be?

Running HB who played a bit up forward - played about 50 games and kicked about 25 goals (including 4 in the 2nd half of a prelim!)

What kind of player is the reall eddie betts?

Eddie Betts (Calder) - 26 Nov 86, 170cm, 72kg. Lightening quick forward pocket who is able to kick impossible goals. Only underage All Australian last year, hits the ball at pace. Only query is his size.

Eddie Betts
26/11/86
170cm
62kg
Templestowe/Calder

At 170cm and 62kg, there is not a lot of Betts, but he was an exciting livewire in the championships where he showed great ability around goal. He was a shining light for Vic Metro in the 2003 TAC U-18 Championships. He was at the fall of every ball and was a wonderful front and square player, while he showed clean hands and good vision to spot teammates up the ground. Betts, who has spent some time in South Australia and Western Australia, has now moved to Victoria to pursue his football career. He has certainly put his name forward as one to watch this year.

I think he can naturally progress to a midfield role given his natural footballing ability and skill.

Actually i think it is only North and the Crows who have never had a father/son pick.

GH,

How could you forget Andrew McQualter from Gippsland Power.

I presume he will play 80% of the year for Caulfield Grammar but he will still walk into the Vic Country team (Possibly as Capt) and will be the dominant onballer in the TAC when he plays.

Yes I'm totally bias as I think the kid could be an AFL champion given a chance. He averaged over 40 possession in 3 TAC games last year and kept Eddie Betts quiet playing off HB for Vic Country v Vic Metro in a 2003 Champs game.

I was disappointed Carlton did not to pick him up with their last pick, simply to hide him away for a few years until he beefed up and finished his VCE. He and Andrew Walker would have made a nice team in years to come.

If Brent Hartigan can make AFL then 'Mini' surely must. No disrespect to Hartigan but he has nowhere near the footy smarts and potential of McQ.

Would like to see McQualter make the big league (pun not intent). But reality suggests players that small have a very slim chance of making it through. Jimmy Allan had a standout year in the 2002 TAC Cup, did everything right yet was only rookied. Would be very difficult for McQ to make it.

GeeCat,

I notice in this years AFL/TAC records that McQ is now listed as 180cm. Allan is listed as 171cm. That's almost 4 inches in the old scale so I'm not surprised Allan struggled to be drafted.
One recruiter I know has rated Mini as the equal to Goddard in footy smarts.

Some people tell me he is slow but he is deceptively quick. He seems to run within himself and has the extra gear when required. He retains his footing and always knows where his team-mates are. He is one smart footballer.

He turns 18 in June so hopefully he can pick up another 2cms. Put 10-12 kg on his frame over the next 3 years and he will but cutting them up in the middle for CFC in no time.

A spy of mine at Caulfield Grammar tells me McQ has been hitting the weights and is already putting on some worthwhile kg's.

How can anyone forget Luke Herrington from Dandenong Stingrays, he was last years leading goal kicker in the comp, this year playing in the midfield and today played well against The Dragons.

Also from the Stingrays is Kym Jones, very tall and fit full forward also gets pushed into the ruck, also Rowan Nayna dark skinned, has the skills of a champion and very fit.

One to watch in the next couple of years is Matt Stanley(Dandenong/Narre Warren), last year played a year up an age group(ment to play 16's and played 18s) He won the leauge goal kicking

I think this thread is more on the newer kids on the block rather than those such as Herrington who have been spoken about before

Sezzac,

In no way do I not rate McQ. In fact, I want the kid to make it to the AFL. McQ might have grown abit during the offseason, but my point when comparing him to James Allan was that both are realtively small sized midfielders who gather a heap of the pill. Nevertheless, McQ is still relatively small and it would take a fair bit by him to get drafted. Not that it's beyond the kid.

As I mentioned before on Big Footy, I saw Luke Herrington play in a praccy match a coupla weeks ago & thought he was ordinary. His direct opponent completely dominated him & the opposing team was certainly in better form than the Stingrays. I was a bit dissappointed.

There was an article in the Hun stating how Herrington was going to be played in the midfield during the season, as they felt it would increase Herrington's chances of getting drafted and to help develop another area to his game, as so he wouldn't be known simply as a one-dimensional player. Might just be adjusting to life in the engine room, as to explain for his lack of form.
