Could someone who has watched the progress of this draft do a combined draft of this years and last years and compile a top 15. Just to get an idea on how good this draft actually is.

1. Gibbs
2. M.Murphy
3. Gumbleton
4. Hansen
5. Tom Hawkins
6. Selwood
7. Leunberger
8. D.Thomas
9. Sellar
10.Thorp
11. Josh Kennedy
12. Birchall
13. Proud
14. J.Riewoldt
15. Bartram

Hard to determine because majority havnt been witnessed at AFL level, so making comparisons is very difficult. I based alot of it on what ive heard and potential.

Depends - Are we going on pre-draft opinions of the 2005 crop, or what we know now having watched last year's crop in action at AFL level?

Pre draft Vinnie. Just the pre dradft!

OK. Rate this draft compared to last years in order of who will be the best players.

What is good about this is its really hard to troll a certain player. For instance if people's opinion is that Thomas is not in the top ten than this would exite Collingwood supporters as than they would have two players of better quality than Thomas. (Collingwood fans really love Thomas).

The purpose of this is to give people like myself who really has no idea, a better understanding of just how good this draft could be. Opinions would be very appreciated. :thumbsu:

Considering Selwood captained Marc Murphy last year, you would have to have him just ahead.

Talls
Hansen
Gumbleton
Lburger
Thorpe
Sellar
Kennedy
Ryder
Reiwolt

Smalls
Gibbs
Selwood
Murphy
Ellis
Proud
Thomas
Collard

In other words, the 2005 draft is no match for 2006.

Just like Vandenburg's ahead of Crawford, Hodge and Mitchell?

Before being drafted, Marc Murphy was by far the stand out.

But I remember Kevin Sheehan say last year if Selwood and Jetta had been available, they would've BOTH went ahead of Murphy.

This was of course before we saw Murphy in the AFL.

Fair enough if you were basing it on on field results, but on potential and what we have heard I'm interested in the Ellis ommision.

Its pretty much impossible to compare the players across two years, when one set have played football and the other haven't yet. No matter what, our view of last years players is, and should be, tempered by what they have done so far.

Murphy could have gone 8th in a combined draft - it would have been arguably the right call, based on potential and under-age form, and it would have been a mistake. Thomas might not have cracked the top 20 (most had him pegged as 5-7 last year if I remember correctly) - and that would have been a mistake too.

Plus, last year had less depth, and some far more speculative picks. Ellis was so young - plenty of potential upside, but very risky. Same goes for Dowler with his injury, and probably Kennedy, Pendlebury and Thomas as well. No way teams would use a top pick on a risky player like that in this years draft - but thats not a comment on the talent of the players involved, nor is it an indicator of future performance; its just an indicator that a safe bet is always better than a risky one if the rewards are likely to be similar.

Just by pre-draft ratings, comparing my personal ones to last years:

#1: Lachlan Hansen
#2: Scott Gumbleton
#3: Bryce Gibbs
#4: Matt Leuenberger
#5: Albert Proud
#6: Leroy Jetta
#7: Mitch Thorp
#8: Joel Selwood
#9: Xavier Ellis
#10: Patrick Ryder

I had Ellis and Ryder rated #1 and #2 last year pre-draft, but I'd have them #9 and #10 this year, behind my current top 8.
