Carlton
Am tired of top ten draft lists, possible Carlton 07 line ups even threads about Bryce gibbsHow many times did we all go to the football with a match day line up which included Walker, Waite, Fisher, Scotland, Stevens, Fev, Whitnall, Lappin, Thornton, Houlihan, Simpson and Kouta only to be flogged and fail miserably in our ability to either move the ball, hit targets or even man up.

You can spank off about Bryce all you want but the kid isn’t going to be the difference in Carlton’s 07 campaign, nor is pick 17/19.

Sure some players may blossom and the group may be able to play better as a team but season 07 will be determined by the coaching staff and the ability of the team to properly execute a plan and carryout specific roles.

Where do you think the Coaches should do to try and improve the team’s performance? What game plan will suit our list? How are we going to work the forward line with so many talls.

Answers people, give us answers- not top ten lists.

There is something almost ... dare I say ... Shakespeare like about this literary masterpiece. Inspirational work. :thumbsu:

By the way, my game plan is for the defence to stop goals, the midfield to get the ball, the forwards to kick more goals than the opposition. I should be coaching ....

Nice thinking ODN :thumbs up. Simple game plan, easy to follow!

Reputation does not win games, nor does a name. We can have Fevola, Whitnall, Kouta and whoever else, does not make us win or lose.

I remember a few years ago, we were playing against Essendon. We were without 5 of our top 10 stars, Campo, Allen, Kouta being amongst them, in an otherwise ******** team. we won.

The point is, names do not win games. We can have all the top young players, however they need to gell, they need to believe in themselves and each other. Gibbs and Murphy will not win us games if they dont have support. Thankfully, it looks like we're heading in the right direction with a group of young players who are enjoying playing for each other.

I just hope for toughness at the ball. Man on man footy. Pressure all over the ground. Confidence in their own abilities, and a never give up attitude, which, fortunately for us, they seem to have. Id like to see us play full on from the first bounce, not catch up footy.

I think next year, our weakness will be our defence. Defence starts in the midfield i believe. Up forward we can be fine, if not strong. So i think, work on our defensive play for midfielders and defenders - chasing, man on man, support, creating space, covering for players on the run.

I dont care what our game plan is, so long as they play their footy, not the other team's footy. I'm not a coach, so i have no idea how to answer your questions uptheguts. I'm a soccer player, not a football player ;) I dont even know where to start. I just want one on one footy, toughness at the ball, and second/third/fourth/fifth attempts. I would like the idea of Pagan playing and naming a team, and keeping that team for 3 or 4 weeks, not chopping and changing week in week out. I'd love to see us stick players in KP /areas, not rotation like we did this year - let the younger players find their feet in their positions/areas. For example, Bryan, is wonderful at VFL, he gets one game at AFL level, doesn't have a good one, and gets dropped. I just think players need a few matches to get their confidence up and to find their feet. That is the one thing that really annoys me about Pagan - how he chops and changes the team week in week out. Let them play and settle in their positions.

Pressure, support, space.
Simple.

It's gotta be a team effort next year. I'm fired up now :) And its' past my bed time...

We need to move the ball fast to beat the flood and make sure our fowards have space to lead into . No chipping the ball around.

Our game plan probably isn't our biggest problem at the moment. I find the largest problem with the team is poor decision making and an inability to hit targets.

We need to greatly improve our ability to win the ball out of the middle. Also our players need to be hard at the ball and can't always wait around for someone else to give it to them (ie. r22 vs Swans)

Right you are AWG, we played accountable footy and backed each other all day long. Was at Subi this year when we took it up to the weagles for three quarters....amazing how we delivered to a man, amazing how we backed each other, amazing how we nearly caused an upset and I still remember the boys being roundly applauded from the ground after the game. We have got players with ability, no question there. Our decision making improves with experience and time. Next season will see a more mature side, we will see marked improvement, we will truly see some wonderful things and I can't wait!!!

It's simple, play four quarters!!!

We keep trying to win games with one desperate effort when most of the sting has been taken out. Need consistency and confidence they are the secret ingrediants to football ;)

I think Bradley and Ratten were the other 2

Spot on marcmurphy-inability to hit targets and kicking to guys under pressure where our biggest problems in 06.

Do we even have a skills coach?

Good post. I agree that the "super draft" is not going to answer too many of Carltons problems. It takes time. I think the lack of quality personal at Carlton limits the game plan options available to the coaches. However, no game plan works if the players can't hit a target. I think that anyone expecting a dramatic turn if furtunes for Carlton in 2007 is probably being optimistic. Carlton should be looking for improvement from its young players, a consolidation season from Murphy and Josh, and a steady season from one or two of its early draft picks. Some improvement towards the end of the season with a few good wins would be great.

I agree with that... Too many times this year we let ourselves down with one rubbish quarter, whether we let 'em get the jump on us in the first (Freo, Haw?) and whether we fell away in the last (WCE)

Another big one thats been mentioned is hit targets, work on the delivery into the forward line as well.

The top teams over the last few years are the ones that have played high possesion football. Unfortunatly for carlton we fail to keep possesion due to excessive amount of turnovers. When Pagan first came to CFC it seemed he had a direct, kick it long game plan. As our list and therefore skill levels are improving, a high possesion game plan is slowley being implemented. It was costly in 05 but appears to be the recipe for success.
