I think it is fair to say that 2007 is going to be remembered as the Crows most important year for a decade.
This year we have been forced to participate in the trading market (which we should have been doing over the last couple of years).
If we get it right, we will be able to rejuvenate the list and really set ourselves up for the future (while clearing some of our fringe/older players).
If we get it wrong, and we trade for other fringe/older players or pick poorly in the draft, we will suffer years of misery.
If we have the following move on:
McGregor (trade)
Perrie (retire/put up for trade?)
Meesen
Mattner
Hudson
and perhaps even offer up:
Massie
Shirley etc.. (while they have some interest from other clubs)
Thomson and Knights (could help get VERY good players like Didak, Cooney etc.. )

We could position ourselves VERY well!

Meesen, McGregor and Hudson (one of the most underrated players in the AFL - who wouldn't like a clearance player like him?) should give us some significant bargaining power as several clubs would be keen on their services.
From this we should be able to either secure some early draft picks, or package up to get some very good players.

Personally I would target Cooney (Bulldogs might be willing to trade him given he is inconsistent and not dominating like a #1 pick), Didak, Hurn etc.. Forget the McMahon types, we need to go for GUNS not average!

Get it right and we have the future sealed. Get it wrong and OMG!

My point is that 2007 will be our most important year for setting up our future. This off-season promises to be a big one in trades and we are (whether the coach etc.. like it or not) going to be heavily involved.
We need to get it right!

On another point, is it possible, that Pavlich signed actually signed his 3 year deal for the Crows (i.e. for the crows to take over the contract)? Could his signing with Freo have been only to ensure that they don't lose him for nothing and that his deal stipulates he MUST be traded to the Crows? Probable? Not even close:( Impossible? NO :) ......hey I can hold onto my dreams if I want!:p

Agree with you here DJ75, the trades we do we should be seeking a GUN and draft picks only. Leave the McMahon type's well well alone.

Well, looks like you want to say goodbye to Knights, Reilly, Van Berlo, or Rutten then.

We simply will not get "guns" by trading Hudson, McGregor, Jericho and Mattner.

That is why I went singular, a GUN. No one ever get's more than one in trade week. I disagree though, proper trading of draft pick 10, and Hudson and McGregor can get us a GUN, and if not, stick with securing draft picks or improving those we have.

Note: I would never trade Rutten, the other's you mention, depends what was on offer (in trade week should be always prepared to say goodbye, because it's the only way you can say HELLO to someone else)

Knights? YES
Thompson? YES
Reilly? Only if absolutely necessary
VB? NO, unless it secures a 10 year player & future captain
Rutten? NO

I honestly think we could do some seriously big trades this season and come out of it very well. If we are willing to accept (something we have been unable to do) that the current list will NOT win us a flag.

Would I trade Knights or Reilly for a GUN? As in, Pavlich? Of course, and I have said so in the past. Would I trade Knights or Reilly for simply a good pick? No, I wouldn't. Trading very good players for very good picks is fraught with danger.

People keep saying "we can get some real guns if we trade will this year!". Guns as in who? Who is available?

Throw McGregor and Hudson at the Bullies for pick 5/inquire about the likes of Griffen. Carlton is allegedly interested in Jericho, maybe look at packaging him with pick 10 for something etc etc, or maybe McGregor + Jericho for something etc etc. There are plenty of possible deals we can put out there and plenty of possible returns for those offers, and we may well come up trumps.
