Is it too early to be doing one of these? I haven't done my AFL ladder yet because i am still waiting on the drafts etc, but most of the NRL teams are fairly settled, and I don't think the draw will influence things too much (you only play 4 teams once, and the rest twice). So here is my prediction:

1. Melbourne Storm - can't see much change here after finishing 8 points clear of second in 2006. Inglis will probably be moved closer to the action, which is great for all concerned. They have lost a couple of players, but look at who left last year. The most disciplined and well-coached side in the comp.
2. Canterbury Bulldogs - once again, i can't see too much changing at the top. The dogs also finished 8 points clear of 3rd, even with their problems in the halves through the year. A fully fit trio of Mason, Shrek, and SBW is frightening to all other packs. If Sherwin gets back to his 2004 form, they will be very hard to beat.
3. North Queensland Cowboys - they had a poor season - no one can dispute that. However, i think the addition of Smith is a huge bonus. He is one of the smartest play-makers in the game and will help Thurston out immensely. They looked unbeatable half way through the year, and i think they will handle the State of Origin demand a lot better this year. The loss of Billy Johnstone is a massive blow, but if Webb, Tronc, O'Donnell, Thurstan, Smith and Bowen all stay injury-free - they will win a lot more games than they lose.
4. Brisbane Broncos - even though they won the comp, i dropped them one place. They somehow found an answer to overcome their end of year "slumps" so it was difficult to place them this low. But Webcke is a huge loss, and i think they will take a bit of time to adjust. I predict they will be leading the comp before origin, before dropping down the ladder, but finding some form at the end of the year.

5. Paramatta Eels - another interesting one to pick. Will not play like they did at the start of the year under Hagan. Mark Riddell would be one of my least favourite sportsmen in the world, and frankly i hope the eels do not get close just for his benefit.
6. Manly Sea Eagles - losing Kennedy is a blow, but Manly are well and truly on their way back (to the disgust of all league fans barring Manly supporters). The inclusion of Jamie Lyon is the biggest of season 2007. I can't wait to see them play Paramatta.
7. New Zealand Warriors - who knows with this team? They could be minor premiers or wooden spooners, and few would raise an eyebrow. They have a very solid side on paper, with match winners. They had quite a good season in 2006 when you consider they lost those 4 points. They never seemed to recover from that set-back, even though they won a lot of games, and never really got thumped. Could be the surprise packets.
8. St George Illawarra - The last two places of the top 8 could have gone to a few teams. I have picked the dragons, although they could quite easily fit into the top 4 again. I just have a feeling, even with all their class over the ground, the loss of Barrett and Bailey will hurt this club.

9. Newcastle Knights - just have them missing the finals which may be a little harsh. I liked how they played without Joey last year in those couple of games, however if he misses large portions of the season, look out. Middle of the range team IMO.
10. Wests Tigers - they were the hardest team for me to place. They won't make the top 4, but without Prince, their side looks definately less potent. They desperately need Benji to stay on the paddock. It would not surprise me to see them in the bottom 4.
11. Gold Coast Titans - maybe a little too high but they have impressed me already with the way they have gone about business. If you want to play football on the coast, you will play football - it is not a retirement village or party venue. The acquisition of Billy Johnstone is evidence of that. Cartwright is a great man to have as your first coach as well. The concerns i have with this club is the fact their depth is not great, and if they lose a couple of key players (ie. Prince and Bailey), they could be in a bit of trouble. Also, unity may be an issue at the start of the year.
12. Penrith Panthers - another team i don't rate all that highly, but they definately have the stars to win games of football. Gower and Priddis are the keys to their season.
13. Sydney Roosters - I think this team is vastly overrated. I don't think season 2006 was an aberration at all. Anasta is a cat, they have too many cooks spoiling the broth in the play maker positions, and Gould still has too much influence. I have never really rated Anderson that highly as a coach, even though he has done some very good things. The return of Michiello is a bonus (that guy never plays a bad game), but i can't see them playing finals.
14. Cronulla Sharks - having a look at their playing list, i can't see where they are going to get their points from. Kimmorley and Vagana are overrated and they just don't have the strike power out wide. Their finish to the season was pathetic, and if the death of a favourite son at the start of the season doesn't inspire you to dig deep, nothing will.
15. South Sydney - for the past couple of years i have predicted the rabbits to finish around 12th because surely there is some improvement somewhere. I'm not making the same mistake this year (even with all of their new inclusions). They are an absolute basket-case and really need a culture change at the club. I can't wait until the bunnies play finals again, but that looks to be a long way away. There is always some team from the bottom that surprises everyone, however this team will not be it.
16. Canberra Raiders - i had them at the bottom of the ladder last year as well. They were the huge surprise packets of the season (there are always a couple), largely due to their ability to grind out a match for 70-75 minutes before escaping with a win just before full time or in Golden Point. Once again, i'm going against my heart and have them down the bottom. They have just lost too many quality players.

All in all, that was a very hard ladder to predict. I honestly believe teams 3-13 could finish anywhere on the ladder. Melbourne, bulldogs, Brisbane, Parramatta, and Manly will all play finals, whereas Cronulla, South Sydney and Canberra will miss out in 2007.

These are in no particular order (eg. Melbourne could be 1st or 4th)

Canberra
Penrith
Sydney
Cronulla

Good list, Warwick. I'd agree on most of what you've written bar with a few changes.

1. Parramatta Eels - They've always had a good roster, but I think their attack will finally find cohesion with Hayne most likely moving to Full-Back

2. Canterbury Bulldogs - As listed by yourself

3. Melbourne Storm - I believe that we'll have a good season, but our lack of forwards for at least the first 10 rounds of the season (via injury) I believe will put us back a fair bit.

4. Canberra Raiders - You can quote me on this. Everyone constantly writes them off, but with a new coach and a new direction at the club, they've certainly got the talent to pull off a 'Storm 06' here. Watch out for players like Zillman in the centres and a halves combo of Withers and Dobson.

5. Brisbane Broncos - I feel bad putting the defending Premiers this low (proportionately), but I reckon they'll have a rather sluggish start to the season (which could well run into Origin). It seems almost blasphemy to say this, but after having such a phenomenal season personally last year, I believe Lockyer will definitely have a season of 'less impact'. Interpret that as you wish

6. Penrith Panthers - They've always had one of the more talented rosters in the competition and I think that a new coach will provide them with an exciting new direction.

7. St George Dragons - Bailey's absence will hurt them - alot. IMO, Riles isn't a good enough leader of any pack, let alone the Dragons pack. Recruiting Woolford was also a stop-gap solution to their problems at 9 - I feel they would have been better blooding someone younger like Ndaira.

8. Manly Sea Eagles - Like with the Dragons and Broncos, the loss of their marquee forward will hurt them alot. Then again, if Orford fires up then they're a chance for Top 4 if not Top 2.

9. Gold Coast Titans - I like them as a team - but player depth will begin to bother them later on in the season.

10. Sydney Roosters - Sorry, I just dont like their roster - at all.

11. Cronulla Sharks - Welcome to the Shire, Ricky.

12. South Sydney - I really hope they do better for Kidwell's sake, but I really cant see it happening.

13. West Tigers - With Prince gone and Benji perennially injured, they'll be lucky not to get the spoon, IMO.

14. Newcastle - Mullen is the way of the future just as Johns is the way of the past. They'll never achieve much if they persist with Gidley at 6 and I reckon Brian Smith will have another poor season.

15. North Cowboys - Unsure about them the most - Could be Top 2 or Bottom 2 (bix mix, I know). Not confident about their halves - Smith could be the key.

16. NZ Warriors - I could be wrong. :p

16.

1. Broncos - The NRL is due for a back to back premier and the Broncos have some brilliant youngsters and their best forward and back are both in career best form.

2. Dragons - some might say the loss of Barrett, Timmins and Bailey might hurt them but it could also be argued that they haven't won a premiership with those guys so they might be a better chance without them around. Slowly but surely there are less (if any?) players who played with the coach which has to be a good thing.

3. Cowboys - a fit Thurston will only improve. Their forwards need to take a leap forward - too much potential and not enough performance. If that happens, they are good enough to play in another grand final.

4. Bulldogs - the best forwards in the comp and a fit Sonny Bill might be the catalyst. They need some penetrating outside backs.

5. Storm - I can see them making another grand final but they'll start slowly and come home like a steam train. If they are in the eight in May, then they might even finish 1st.

6. Tigers - This is on the basis that Benji is fit. Without him, they are bottom 4 material. Even with Benji, I don't think their roster is strong enough to finish any higher.

7. Eels. They play some awful footy at times but if they limit their really bad days, they are good enough to win 50%+ which is good enough to get you into the 8.

8. Roosters - Like him or not, Chris Anderson coaches winning sides. He'll program them into a style of footy that some teams will struggle against. Not a premiership outfit though.

9. Sea Eagles - I don't think that Lyon is the superstar he is made out to be (even in his Parramatta days I thought he was a little overrated). The rest of the side is honest at best.

10. Sharks - They are OK and might surprise. I think Kimmorley is overrated without an absolutely dominant forward pack, which Cronulla don't appear to have. Wrong halfback for this team and that will cost them.

11. Knights - This is based on Johns played 18-20 games which is a reasonable assumption. They just looked like a side on the decline last year.

12. Warriors - I like Price and I like Cleary as a coach so it pains me to say that the Warriors' stuggles will continue.

13. Titans - I bet they'd be aiming for 7th or 8th but their roster is limited in my opinion. Like most inaugral squads, they have too many fringe first graders in their squad and I believe Rogers is not a gamebreaker. It wouldn't surprise me to see Rogers back on the wing (with Presto at fullback) by year's end.

14. Souths - This is a step forward and they'll have a run of games where they really look the goods. I don't think there will be much between positions 10-16 in terms of the premiership ladder and Souths should aim for the top end of that.

15. Raiders - I think that they will be the same as Souths - a run of games where they look a million bucks but in the end a lack of class and experience will cost them.

16. Panthers - They could surprise if Gower plays all season and the forwards start to rumble but I think that this could be the year that the Panthers have to have in terms of blooding some youngsters.

I'm surprised you have Canberra that high Phil. They have lost about 6 from their starting line-up and look like they will really struggle.

I predicted my ladder in early November, and since then I think the broncos will probably move into 2nd or 3rd place. They just have a habit of finding young players to fill the gaps, and blokes like Taylor and Kenny look exceptional. Keep an eye out for Taylor next year - he will be close to rookie of the year IMO.

In some other news, the cowboys have signed former NZ international Sione Faumuina.

MELBOURNE STORM-Can't see much changing here. If anything, they'll increase the distance between themselves and the rest of the competition. I can't imagine they'll have much joy when it comes time to renegotiate those contracts though
WESTS TIGERS-I'll be brave and tip an injury free season for Benji. They're forward pack too! One of the more talented outfits in the NRL and coached by a very wily old character.
NZ WARRIORS-Ivan Cleary transformed the Warriors from an inconsistent rabble into an outfit that could match the top clubs by the seasons end. They've got a good pack, solid halves and some absolute beasts in the backline. They'll go well and they'll go far.
MANLY SEA EAGLES-Kite assumed leadership of the Manly pack towards the back end of last season, when Kennedy was injured. He did well. The forwards mightn't be top four quality but when you've got the backline Manly has all you have to is hold your gound in the forwards and the points will come. They're defence was consistently miserely last year and I don't see that changing.
BRISBANE BRONCOS-The Old Legs of the forward pack will struggle. Not that it matters when you've got kids like Taylor coming through. I tip them here because I reckon this season is their 'rebuilding' phase.
CANTERBURY BULLDOGS-The Forward pack is still awesome. The Backs are still poor, and Sherwin is old and Holdsworth has only limited talents. They'll bash thier way into the eighth with practically no creativity. They're no nonsense style will serve them well in the pressure cooker finals situations though.
SYDNEY ROOSTERS-They've got the Talent to make the eight, and as long as he is given complete independance, Anderson produces the results.
NORTH QLD COWBOYS-Don't know why, looking at thier roster, but I think the Cowboys will just scrape into the eight. Thurston's about thier only really top shelf player now that Sing's Gone. Bowen will be found wanting once more this season.

-ST GEORGE-ILLAWARRA-The Gasnier experiment will fail. Timmins will prove to be a massive loss, and Ryles will spend most of the season on ice. They're still very talented and very in the race for the top 8 though.
-NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS-So...What exactly do the Noughts have beyond Joey, Bedsy & a tendency to treat match officials like hookers from Ipswich? not much it seems. Brian Smith and Joey to be at each others throats atleast once this year publicly.
-SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS-Taylor's very astute. A solid forward pack, some young prospects in the backline. It will be a season of renewal for the Bunnies. If Asotasi goes down, expect some pain for the Rabbitohs
-GOLD COAST TITANS-Some good players in key positions, but lack the depth to truly stay competitive over a long season. They'll be honest and they'll make sure that most opposition teams earn two points off them. It's all you can ask of a new club.
-PARRAMATTA EELS-Hindmarsh can't be expected to prop up the forward pack all by himself. They're not getting any younger either. Jarryd Hayne will be no longer effective now that teams will cover him. Lack the penetration in the forwards to create room for starts like Tahu. Tim Smith is also a complete myth.
-CANBERRA RAIDERS-Very inexperienced, if you allow me, a little 'Green' :p. By Jove they do have a great young forward pack though! Once they're more cohesive as a unit and more experienced they'll break a few teams hearts come seasons end.
-PENRITH PANTHERS-The Panthers forward pack is a shadow of its former self. Craig Gower is a shadow of his former self. The exciting young backs have failed to kick on in any convincing fashion. Another terrible year at the foot of the mountains.
-CRONULLA SHARKS-Crap roster, Crap Coach, and above all, crap halfback. Can they just die and relocate to Adelaide or the Sunshine Coast already...

Here are my SL tips
WIGAN, HULL, ST HELENS, LEEDS, CATALANS, WARRINGTON
Bratfurt, Harlequins, Salford, Huddersfield, Hull KR, Wakefield (Widnes to go up)

CC Winner-Wigan
Grand Final- Wigan 40-St Helens 6.

I'm surprised you have Canberra that high Phil. They have lost about 6 from their starting line-up and look like they will really struggle.

They're forward pack is big and skilled, just really, really inexperienced. After getting the crap kicked out of them for a few rounds, watch them improve out of sight by seasons end.

If they can hold the young nucleus of the squad together for a few seasons, they'll be a powerhouse.

Agreed A+L. I think you'll be suprised, Warwick. I rate Elliott very highly as a coach and I think he could be the missing cog to the Green Machine.

It'll take some time for Dobson and Carney to get used to each other, but with some more than handy backs and some young forwards, they are the team to watch in 2007.

BRISBANE BRONCOS-The Old Legs of the forward pack will struggle. Not that it matters when you've got kids like Taylor coming through. I tip them here because I reckon this season is their 'rebuilding' phase.
The broncos in "rebuilding" mode means they are a chance to finish outside the top 4. There is a mentality at the club (and in the media), that anything less than a grand final appearance is a wasted year. That is why they have only missed the finals 3 times in their 19 years (the last year they missed was 91). They just seem to continually produce top quality players.

It would give me no greater pleasure to see the Cowboys smash them twice this year (even if the 'boys don't make the GF, but the broncos do).

The Broncos are hard to call. Calling it a rebuilding phase is fair enough but I'd argue that they were in a rebuilding phase last year and pinched a premiership. How they go this year will depend on whether that rebuilding phase is over or if last year was a bit of a fluke based on hitting form at the right time and their best players all in form at the same time. I actually think their squad will be stronger in 07.

Dragons (never underestimate this mob)
Sea Eagles (big improvers, started to get their act together late 2006. kennedy will be a loss though)
Storm (thereabouts again. Too good a roster to be too far away)
Bulldogs (see Dragons. Will be challenging again)
Eels (could even be higher. I'm probably being a little too sceptical. If had balls, I'd tip them for top 2)
Broncos (premiership hangover maybe. Maybe not. Probably rating them too low)
Tigers (will surprise this year and won't do too much wrong)
Raiders (8th will be just making up the numbers and Canberra will be doing just that. Will do enough during the year to sneak in)

Cowboys (who knows? Could be bottom three or in the 8, so I went somewhere in between)
Warriors (I reckon this mob could really get their act together and march up the ladder again. Was tempted to put them 8th)
Rabbitohs (improving, but just not quite there yet)
Knights (Johns does not have the same influence anymore and seems happier playing 20/20 cricket for NSW)
Titans (will trouble a few sides and it will be interesting to see how they go)
Panthers (could finish higher than this, but bottom four seems more likely)
Roosters (nup)
Sharks (long way back for Cronulla)

Storm: Should have won last year.
Dragons: They must get it right at some stage.
Cowboys: Deserve another shot.
Broncos: I hope they fail.
Sea Eagles: Good side.
Warriors: Must move forward from last years huge strides.
Bulldogs: Always there or thereabouts.
Tigers: Much will depend on Benji.

Eels: New coach will help, but I think they've had their chance.
Roosters: Anderson will make a difference.
Knights: If Johns stays fit, they'll make the 8. I don't think he will.
Souths: Will be the most improved side of 07 and a top 8 spot wouldn't surprise me.

Sharks.
Panthers.
Raiders.
Titans.
