Hi guys and gals and ... well, yeah.

I watched the 07 flag on the weekend to remind myself where it all started, and I was away on work and bored.

Great to watch and see just how good they were, and I forgot how awful PP were as well.
What I kept thinking was how would the 2013 team go against the 07 flag team? I tend to think the current crop would win - bigger, smarter, more adaptable, better coach (couldn't resist :D). It would be an awesome battle, guess it depends on who from 2013 we put on the park quite a bit (duh). Interesting also to see the weapon hanging about and half of the rest of the current AFL coaches on the Cats payroll in 07.

Imagine Chappy 07 lining up on Boris 2013. Or Chappy 2013 lining up on Dasher 2007. The permutations are manyfold and the possible gamedays almost endless. Forwards better today, backs break even, mids 07 win, rucks win in 07. Depth better in 13, more game plans in 13.

Anyway I thought I would post this on a cold and wet Monday night and see what y'all think.

For mine it goes 2007>2008>2011>2009>2013.

But that might change in a month or 3.

2007 was just a team on some kind of ride, we dominated from round 6 like nothing I've seen. No-one would have beaten the Cats on Grand Final day.

2008 was a brutally dominant side, amazing really although I do wonder if opposition "knew" they would lose so rested players/went easier since giving 80% = lose and giving 100% = lose?

2011 was a GREAT team, awesome really.

2009 I have below those 3 but not due to anything other the sheer brilliance of those top 4, 2009 we did taper a little late and IMO it came down to will and the ability to say "we WILL NOT LOSE" to get over the line, the Saints had a better year.

2013 could jump a spot or 2 depending on the rest of the year but we aren't even a shadow of the top 3 currently.
2007,2008 and 2011 we dominated the stats, this year we are middle of the pack at best, LONG way to go although we could still win the flag (you dont have to win them ALL by 20 goals after all :p).

Edit: 2008 and 2011 could swap positions depending on my mood, at times I remember how we finished the last month and remember the mentality from the club. 2011 didn't have those weaknesses.

The 07 game was very open , no zoning so tactically the current group would be better. But the 07 group was far closer to a team at its zenith. The would get it done with a goal or two to spare.

Ottens in the ruck , Ablett around ground , Mooney before the yips , Scarlet close to his very best.
Chappy , Max Rooke , Milburn mmm very tough team.

The current side with HarryT, Christensen , Hawkins , Motlop would not be shamed it would be worth the price of admission , no doubt.

EDIT : We were close to our best in 08 , perhaps our deficiency at CHF being a chink but our midfield was just awesome.

Selwood much improved, Mackie better, Kelly better, SJ better (!), Stokes much better, Travis (if/when) better, Duncan, also include Motlop, very adaptable.

What I was really thinking is that this team would tough it out against 07, much like they can do now when other teams are flying, and find a way to win. Perhaps that intangible mental strength thing.

Not sure you noticed , I avoided players in both sides. One must remember we made a Prelim in 04 , finals in 05 before 07. That side was very, very ready. The only thing holding us back was us.
For mine the current side is potentially just as good but atm not there yet.

not even close. the 2007 side would smash the 2013 version.

our team from 2007-08 has the majority of players in their absolute prime. the backline was a rock, and the midfield had unprecedented depth. and max rooke

the end result of the 2007 grand final was fitting, because i think we were close to 20 goals better than the next best team. 2007 would beat today's team by 10 goals at least

Rooke would slaughter anyone who came within 10 feet of him, Corey was in his absolute prime and so too was Scarlett, Wojak, Ottens, Kelly, Chappy, Lingy and Boris.

2007 would win by 5-6 goals imo.

West simply wouldn't get past Ottens as Otto still had his hops and I think Hawkins wouldn't get a kick against that back-line who all knew each others strengths & weaknesses and could make some of the best forward lines look completely inept.

of course, Chris Scott believes we have much improvement to come, so the current team may be another 5-7 goal better side than what we saw on the weekend.

Kelly is better now then what he was in 2007, his best year by far was 2011.

he's been very consistent throughout his entire career.
I think he got more license under Scott to play a different role but your right, he's a more complete footballer today.

I was comparing them to the competition for that year, a direct comparison would result in the 2013 team being better.
Why? Every year clubs improve, how would the 07 side go against the zoning of today's game? The zoning that in its infancy dismantled that gameplan?
2013 vs 2007 directly would win by several goals.

Yeah, when you compare players or teams from 2 different eras, the only relevant or even sensible basis is by comparing each against the competition in its own era. The increase in average height, weight, strength and speed from one era to the next otherwise makes the exercise pointless.

The 2007-08 team were probably the best Geelong team in history (51-52 were decades before I was born, that said). We are currently a really good, workmanlike side but the 2007-08 incarnation was just brilliant. Also, they had Ablett and Scarlett at the peak of their powers - one the best midfielder since at least Lethal Leigh, the other perhaps the best fullback of all time.

Not sure if the OP is serious! 2007 would win by about 10 goals. Whether certain players are better now, or bigger, or fitter or whatever, is irrelevant. All that matters is excellence relative to each respective era, and Geelong 2007 was the best side in the comp by about 6 goals at a minimum.

Otherwise, it had a much better spread of experienced players, and more champion players in their prime.

2007 beats 2013. In terms of how good our team has been from 2007 to now, it goes.

2007>2008>2011>2009>2013>2010>2012
