It looks pretty good. I like the idea of traditionally starting against Sydney, which the AFL has started to toy with. Personally, two games at AAMI is great for me, but not necessarily great for the Saints. I think that if we are going to have to play at Carrara for a game, hey, who better to play against than the Dees?! Interesting to note we play the two WA teams sequentially at TD. We should win a fair few, and be in a position to go top 3.

I'm happy with that draw.

Maybe (possibly - only one game at the MCG, maybe) I'll find reasons to complain later, but after a first look, it looks ... really good.

Yeah draw looks great... No Freo at Subi which is what... The first time ever... Not that it really bothered us this year :)

Only one against Cats and Hawks is also great!

This years draw was good tho :(

Yeah, pretty shocked that we play our first game at the G in Round 22.

Thats probably not gonna work in our favour...

Otherwise a pretty decent draw, wouldn't have minded a few more Friday or Saturday night games, and a couple less Twilight games.

We just needed to play on a Thursday and we'd have had every timeslot covered...

As a SA SAINTER i am pretty happy for us to be playing 2 games at AAMI next season. We play pretty good there, especially against the crows. I hate us playing on a friday night normally cos it is always delayed on channel bruce. But with us playing on a friday night only 3 times and 2 of those at aami it is all good :)

What an awsome draw. 15 games at TD. only 4 interstate games. I consider AU & C neutral territory, and its melb were playing at Carara. Oh man here we come finals 09.

It depends.
If the object is to squirm our way into finals it is a great draw.
If the object is to win the grand final it would be better with more MCG games and more games against Cats/Hawks.

My early thoughts as well September. What heartens me is that the favourable draw (if we can take full advantage of it) should instill a winning mentality in the players minds, and make other teams more wary of us.

Would have liked one or two more blockbuster games at the G though- that Maggies Monday game in round 7 seems tailor-made for a big crowd (although it would probably have to be on a Friday or Saturday night to come close to filling the G now that I think about it, but still...)

Selfishly I'm dissapointed we're not playing Lions at the Gabba but at least I've got the GC game. Pretty dissapointed at the one MCG game in round 22. Bit more time at the G would be good.

Rd 18+19 i dont like, back to back interstate games, come on!!

Sat night games i like, 2 in Adelaide in like 4 weeks not great

I think you could be right about it being the first time that we haven't played Freo at Subi. I usually go to all our Freo matches over here as it is easier to get seats than the Eagles matches, which are almost always sell outs due to their high membership. So not really great news for me to not have the Freo match but probably good for the club that they only have one trip West.

Otherwise it does look a pretty good draw, can't complain about only playing the Hawks and Cats once and playing teams like Melbourne and West Coast twice.

Before 2009....

PLayed Freo in Perth every year except 1995.

Played Brisbane in Brisbane every year since they became the lions except 2003.

not much to complain about besides a multitude of Sunday games. :thumbsu:

Not Port, may as well lose 4 points without playing when we go there.

Not happy with all the Sunday games!
And playing 5 interstate teams in the first 5 rounds?
When was the last time we played a Melbourne team in round 1?
06, Melbourne at the G I think (Season Opener if my memories ok).

Saints 09' fixture statement

The St Kilda Football Club is pleased to announce a fixture for 2009 that will allow more members and supporters to attend live games and watch the Saints in action.

The full 2009 fixture released by the AFL this morning revealed an increase in Sunday games for the Saints who will also play five interstate away matches and pioneer the league’s Monday Night Football initiative against Collingwood at Telstra Dome in Round 7.

Senior Coach Ross Lyon said, “It’s a positive draw in a football sense.”

“We play 15 of our 22 matches at the Telstra Dome, only travel to Perth and Queensland once and return to the Gold Coast for a home game against the Demons.”

The key points for the Saints in the 2009 fixture are:

• 15 of 22 games to be played at the Telstra Dome
• The first time in five seasons the Club embarks on just one Perth trip
• No game at the Gabba for just the second time in 12 years
• Monday Night Football against Collingwood in Round 7
• A return to the Gold Coast for a home clash against Melbourne in Round 10
• Just one game each against the 2008 Grand Finalists, including playing Hawthorn in Tasmania
• Home and away matches against Melbourne, Essendon, West Coast, Kangaroos, Sydney, Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs

While St Kilda strongly believes it has been handed a fair football draw, the Club also realises that it faces a significant commercial challenge given the redistribution of highly sought after timeslots which leaves the Saints without a Friday night home game in 2009.

Saints CEO Archie Fraser said, “It’s a major shift away from what the Club has been used to over the past few seasons, but we are committed to making the most of the hand we’ve been dealt and we are well advanced with strategies on how to maximise improved membership satisfaction and growth from this draw.”

“On a positive note, it’s a fair footy draw that gives our members and supporters the opportunity to come and watch more live St Kilda games at the Telstra Dome in a range of new time slots that haven’t been available over the past few years. At the end of the day, we’re all involved to win football games and we believe this draw will give us a solid opportunity to achieve this outcome.”

I'm happy with it. May not be good off the field but good for on it which is the main thing.

More live games. :thumbsu::)

Apparently only 10 free to air games. Looks like I need to scrape up $800 for Foxtel.

Equal lowest free to air games with Melbourne of Victorian based clubs. That is really unfair. Collingwood have 18 and Richmond and Carlton have 16 each.

5 twilight games is not good either.

How come we don't end up with not even one home friday night game. teribble.

I'm sure that the way we have been playing has affected our ratings and popularity over the last two years.

The draw is fine in terms of who we play etc. BUT!!!

The AFL is basically saying: "we don't think much of St Kilda". No blockbuster Friday night games. No free to air coverage.

It stinks...................
