Ok, let me just start by saying, I love soccer. I watch the EPL every weekend, attend the occasional A-League game and have been prone to addictive spells of Football Manager on my PC.

Every 4 years the World Cup gets talked up the greatest event in sport, the beautiful game, etc etc. Every time I get excited for it but everytime, without fail, it disappoints and leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth. Maybe its due the fact that I mainly watch leagues that play a more "physical" style (UK, AUS) but I think it may be due to my exposure of the latin style during this event.

The constant staging is borderline ridiculous. Take the Kaka situation for example. Kaka misses a game but the Portuguese player dives without retribution. FIFA just allow it. Why don't they review footage from each game, recind cards and ban these faking players for their actions. David Zdrilic is right, this will go along way to stopping an aspect of the game that has been taught by latin and some european country coaches. The Daniele De Rossi, dive in open field. Should have been a suspension. But no, they allow him to play against NZ and with a mild shirt pull, which occurs in every box during a dead ball, he goes down and Italy get a penalty.

The way the commentators comment when they see a replay of an alledged elbow to the head, but me, the viewer, can clearly see a forearm to their upper back. They pump up the players courage for getting to their feet. This happens at least 5-10 times a game and it shits me every time!! I would love to see what would happen to these guys if they backed into a pack containing Barry Hall/Aaron Sandilands and co.

Ghana, yes Ghana, advance to the second round after drawing and winning a game in which they played against teams that finished a game with 10 men and both goals they score for the entire First Round are penalties. The reason why they go through instead of us is due to the fact they didn't lose to Germany by as many goals. Yes, I understand goal difference, but the bottom line is they are gifted 2 penalties against 10 men teams and are through. I hope they get belted 6-0 in the Second Round.

The Vuvuzelas!!!! The spokesman for the tournament says embrace our culture. How am I supposed to embrace something that sounds like a wasp nest in your ears for 90 minutes. Seeing these people dancing, jumping up and down in the stands, blowing these stupid trumpets instead of watching the game baffles me. Why not go to a club or bar and do the same without shelling out massive Rand for a ticket? Oh the atmosphere you say, please.....

The shit body langauge of players who don't get a cross from their team mate in a box. These idiots stay offside and sulk. Another thing that annoys. Why can't they all be like Ryan Nelsen? If they all played with his heart and toughness, then yes, the World Cup would be quite the spectacle....

I could go on but that is all I can remember for now.

Good points there neddy36, things that you have mentioned certaintly won't help 'grow the game' in places where it is not the most popular sport (Eg: Australia, New Zealand)

Whilst the WC is great it's The Olympics ---> World Cup for mine

I love how people with absolutely no idea about the sport jump on the bandwagon every 4 years and come out with the ridiculous comments seen in this thread.
Just like we all becoming expert 10m high dive judges every four years too.

6.7 - too much splash

see ya later England, not that it would have saved them but what a joke for that goal not to be called.

As for amer, bagging the rules? At least they don't change the rules every year like the ****ing AFL.

Also Drummond, you follow tennis. Infact you appear to love womens tennis. Pretty embarrassing really.
This is the last I'll say on the matter, but...

At least footy's rules aren't absolutely crippling, sport shattering rules. At least footy isn't blatantly crooked, an exercise in futility to support if you're anyone bar a big fish. I could go on; the game as a spectacle; chip, chip, maybe a goal at some stage but ultimately not much on offer; far more prevalent bad supporter culture (including large-scale brawls, riots, abuse); soft**** players who put Matty Lloyd to shame when they flimsily fall to the ground (I'm gobsmacked that ANYONE could seriously compare such rubbish to what we see in our great game of Australian Rules football).

Seeing the utter tripe that is routinely allowed to fly in the game of soccer, it hits home just how fortunate we are to have a game of the caliber of Australian rules football in our own backyard. Largely quality culture (amongst fans and players alike, hardness at the contest, genuine passion), terrific spectacle, and the standard of umpiring much better. Not to mention the fact that our players are so accessible to the fans - how many other major sports allow you to head down to the pub or wander down to open, easy-going training sessions and have a proper chat to the biggest names at your club? I'm glad we're out of the FIFA tournament. Why attempt to lift a trophy that rewards advancing through an utterly farcical competition principally run and competed in by pompous idiots? That England non-goal is one of the worst things I've ever seen in sport - how can WORLD CLASS umpires on a smaller ground, with fewer players and interpretations to keep tabs on, miss something so blatant as that? It amazes me that a game played by every country in the world and being regulated by a ****ing international board can have so, so many things being handled so poorly.
