The Scratching Post

The Scratching Post is a privatised board for off-topic discussions and a private way to vent your spleen.

Often, threads from the Geelong Board will be moved to The Scratching Post and can only be seen with a subscription to this private Board.

To join The Scratching Post:

1. Request access from the Group Memberships section under My BigFooty.
   
2. Select 'Cat Scratchings' from the list provided and click on 'Join Group'.
3. Send a Private Message to one of SJ, winty or rizzo. This moderator will then grant you access based on number of posts and topics that you have posted. A random sample will be used to determine this.

Note: If non-Geelong supporters wish to apply to join, they will need a current member of The Scratching Post to vouch for them and they are required to nominate this member. Any infraction awarded to a non-Geelong supporter in The Scratching Post also is given to their sponsor.

What's on in 2011 and how you can get involved

Welcome to another year on the Geelong Board! Before the season kicks off, we've put together a list of how you can get involved in this community and initiatives that have been put in place to make this a better place to be in 2011.

Housekeeping

Rules
The Geelong Board rules have received a slight face lift in the off-season. This thread is now open for members to ask questions regarding the running of this board if necessary.

Thread directory
A directory of important, regular and popular threads will be kept under the list of rules. This will also house the 2011 time capsule, which will keep a record of our Geelong's matches, results and our weekly threads on each.

Weekly thread structure

In years past, we have had some problems in regards to the threads regarding the weekly rhythm of matches. With a mish-mash of previews, teams, game day discussion and review threads, everything was all over the place. Often we had two sets of identical discussion happening concurrently in both the preview and teams threads, but we didn't want to merge them as many want to find the teams easily on a Thursday afternoon, and not ten pages into a four-day old thread.

So in the off-season, a few of the senior posters gave some input into how to structure the weekly threads so they are simple to navigate, easy to follow and one can find what one wants quickly.

The following outlines the threads that will run each week during season 2011 (tl;dr? the bold summarises each thread!):

preview AFL Round [x] - [Home] v [Away], [Venue], [Time] [Day] [Date]
The much-loved preview thread is back for 2011. With a preview written by our resident experts in the opening post and discussion about potential ins and outs, it is no doubt the biggest gathering of thoughts regarding the upcoming Geelong game anywhere on earth! This thread will generally be created on a Sunday or Monday and will continue until game day, when it will be locked and game day discussion can begin. A link to continuation of discussion occuring on game day will be the final post in this thread.

Sticky: news AFL Round [x] teams - [Home] v [Away]
To remove the double-up with the preview thread, but retain the ease and speed of those wanting to check teams in one glance on a Thursday night, a single post containing the selected teams will be stickied and locked when released every Thursday from 5PM. This thread will contain a link to the point in the preview thread where the actual teams are first discussed, for those wanting to have their say over the selections.

AFL Round [x] match discussion - [Home] v [Away]
For those who want to discuss that rumour of a late change before they leave for the footy or for others who can't get to the game, this is the thread for you. The match discussion thread will allow those who want to discuss the match as it happens a clear space, again without having to search through pages and pages of posts that happened days before. This thread will be closed after the match and a link posted to the match review thread.

review AFL Round [x] autopsy - [Home] defeats/is defeated by [Away] by [margin]
Win, lose or draw, here's your chance to discuss what went right, what went wrong, and everything in between! With a thread title outlining the match result, BigFooty users will find it quick and simple to find other opinions about the game. An 'autopsy' thread works well on other club boards and is designed for general discussion regarding the match that doesn't warrant its own specific thread. Scope definitely exists for specific threads to be created based on issues arising from the game.

mvp AFL Round [x] votes - [Home] v [Away]
Once again, the Geelong Board Most Valuable Player award will be run. Amazingly, using this 5-4-3-2-1 format has correctly predicted the Geelong Best and Fairest winner for four consecutive seasons! In 2010 we fell behind on the week-by-week tally of this award, however it ended up working well as a 'vote count' come season's end. It will be run again in this way in 2011, with a vote count night once the season is over to award our MVP.

mrp AFL Round [x] charges - [player and charge details]
For any speculation or realisation of unwanted charges from the AFL Match Review Panel each week, a thread will be created when necessary to discuss these details. The title will be changed when necessary with MRP/tribunal outcomes.

2nds VFL Round [x] - [Home] v [Away], [Venue], [Time] [Day] [Date]
Last but not least, follow the fortunes of our up-and-comers in the VFL, as live scores and match reports are posted here weekly of our VFL matches.

Competitions

AFL Dream Team and Herald Sun SuperCoach leagues
This year, Chief has put up a BFSC Platinum membership to the highest ranked player on each board for both Dream Team and SuperCoach. We are currently entering teams our fourth Dream Team league and sixth SuperCoach league.

BigFooty tipping
The BigFooty tipping competition is up and running again with great prizes on offer! Make sure you register for the Geelong private competition if you have not been a part in the past!

Geelong prediction quiz
After cats2rise took out last year's crystal ball quiz, accurately predicting many of 2010's results during the preseason, winty has set out a whole stack of new questions for 2011! Another BFSC membership is up for grabs so remember to enter before Round 1!

So that's just about it! Thank you to some of the senior posters who have helped out with ideas in the off-season, and to those who have and will volunteer their time over this season to make this a better place to follow our team.
