I said it last year and I've said it a few times since, C.Scott was our biggest loss last year by a bit. I desperately wanted him to miss the Port job (imagine if he got that gig instead ), then Thomo had to go AWAL and I had a sick feeling Cats would nab him, and they did.

Anyway, he's welcome back anytime, in the mean time - congrats :thumbsu:

As a footnote, interesting all the recent appointments have come from 'successful programs' - it seems to be a key ingredient, yet Scott (admittedly a 3 time premiership player in his day) came from us and was still able to get the job done.

I was saying it very early in the year.

Geelong are playing the type of way we were in 2010.
Massive pressure around the ground, attacking through the corridor as much as possible.
Kids would get opportunities an be given confidence an they would do well.
Look at the difference in Hawkins an any other young geelong player that stepped in.

Tarrant also mentioned not long after leaving that Chris Scott was the guy he had to thank for turning him into a very good defender.

He was the brains behind our performance in 2010 an i guess the freo board believed this also.

It will be the making of us. Board showed the gonads to get the best coach in the land. Expect Ross Lyon to serve it up to Geelong and Collingwood next year and beyond. Oh yeah.... lets get our biatches in St Georges Tce by the throat again.:)

The interviews i heard(on sportfm) from the cats players re scott showed an enormous amount of respect for a rookie coach coming in and taking the time to listen to the players and not dramatically changing the game plan.

well done scotty and yes they played like the lions of 2001-2003. get it in long and quick to big marking forwards and have quality crumbers ie johnson, menziel, christian, stokes.

yes i agree with other posters that our board recognized that scott was the wind beneath harvey's wings.

Scott was on 'On The Couch' last night.

Said a few interesting things. One was that tactics only make up about 5% of a club's success. The rest is laid down in the basics.

He noted that Geelong's culture was one purely about winning contested ball and being better at that then their opponent(s). Said that not all players came to the club with that skill, but were expected to master it before they made the grade.

Interesting to me, as I've always felt we've had coaches trying to be too clever. Even Harvey, as dim as he seemed, tried to turn too many players into utilities, experimenting with bizarre structures to gain an advantage, and leaving the important stuff to too few. Freo has never seemed to be a club that has mastered the basics of winning contested ball. Hopefully this what Lyon brings.

Of course, that five percent of tactical impact matters, but only if you're in the top four or so teams in the league. To get there, you have to be better than your opponent at winning the hard ball.

i really hope this is what RL brings. Cuddles was full of great ideas, some way ahead of the curve, but this was never backed up with the strength of a good core skill set. I think harvey was starting to develop this skill set, bringing in guys with high skill level and not focusing so much on athletic ability.

I'd actually love to see our 2010 roving press backed up with some true a-grade skills. At the end of a GF, when the energy has gone, and everyone has given their all, the skills will remain, while the leg speed may drop and press may fall apart.
