Roche berates Tomic

http://www.theage.com.au/sport/tenn...t-of-davis-cup-contention-20120916-260gv.html

We shouldn't be relying on Hewitt to play 3 matches in 3 days. In hindsight, should have conceded the 2nd rubber on Friday and played Ebden, resting Hewitt for doubles and reverse singles. It's going to be a LONG road back. Our only hope in years to come is Tomic to win both his matches and for us to win the doubles.

It's very easy to say in hindsight that Hewitt should of been rested first day but looking it on paper, we couldn't be sure Tomic was going to beat stebe on clay and given Mayer's up and down form, you would of given hewitt a good chance. The one thing is for sure Hewitt is not playing 3 days in a row again, he might not want to admit it but his aging body just can't do it anymore, nothing wrong with that, got to know your limits, that's if he plays again...

Just reading some of the Herald Sun comments from that article, man people are dumb, suggesting Hewitt and Tomic were tanking, lulz....

As much as the results made me sick (I wasn't lying about it being the saddest result in the history of tennis) I think this continual media beat-up is not going to help at all. Sure, Hewitt sucked balls last night but playing 3 days in a row is tough. I honestly didn't think Tomic did that badly last night, sure you can question his attiude on court but the matchup against Mayer on clay just plain sucks.

The zonal group will be tougher next year too with Japan and Uzebikstan in there. Hopefully Japan is seeded along with us but with every year being stuck in zonals it's going to get tougher to get out. Still could be a while in there now. Excuse me why I go cry about last night some more....

Tony Roche should but out and shut the heck up. Where was he when he was a worthwhile force in coaching? Not in Australia, rather chasing the dollars coaching fed.

Rafter, how about being a full time Aussie and not one one when it suits you, how about paying some tax for a change. As for the commentators , Fitzgerald and Sandy Roberts slagging off on toxic whilst pumping up hewitts tyres. "Cant see how Stebe can hurt Hewitt"

Tomic does not have the body yet he needs to play consistently he is 196cm , needs at least another 6 kilos of muscle to develop his power game. He is only 19 and at a ranking of 42 is the only teenager in the top 100. Give the guy a break. Judge him when he is 23.

The fault lies with Rafter expecting his old mate Hewitt to pull through. Hewitt is toast and in reality has not performed well at Davis cup for two years.

And as I said piss tony roache off, his actions last night reminded me of damir dokic.

. He believes they made a strategic stuff up. (if I haven't linked it properly its on SEN). He referrs to Switzerland last year, how Hewitt against Wawrinka but couldn't keep it up.

Maybe your right, its not Roache's palce to have a crack at Bernie during that time in the match, but the bloke seemingly gives nothing on the court. Players might cop it for choking, but if you have no work ethic, you will get no where. Who knows though, maybe he actully cannot handle the pressure like we all thought and its just manifesting itself in this way.

Also who cares where Rafter lives? Many players live in Monaco for tax reasons.

Rafter ain't a player anymore.

He is a tax dodger.

Lol, do you know his personal circumstances? What an outrageous thing to say. First of all Davis Cup Captain position requires him to be travelling him around to different tournaments around the world, especially the slams, given Australia is so far away from everything, it's quite common to set up base somewhere more central to the tour. Second of all, it doesn't matter at all being a Davis Cup Captain and you are getting off-topic.

Whatever Dude.

Anyway ignoring the fact he has not paid any income tax to the australian government for 18 years. I think the underwear salesman has sat on his hands since he has been Davis Cup captain probably thinking his charm would bluff his way through - good to see the McNamee has not fallen for it.

I don't have a particular issue at the moment with the way Tomic plays. I do have an issue with his behaviour in the USO presser. I also don't have an issue with the tax affairs of pro sportspeople, however they should pay back their funding a la HECS. And let's not forget that Hewitt's official residence for the last 4 years is the Bahamas, so it's unfair to single out anyone.

lets get fair dinkum here, we are not going to get back into the world group with lleyton hewitt playing as unfortunate as that is to say it is the reality of the situation, he is well past his peak and is absolutely on his last legs no matter what he tries to say in regards to prolonging his career. Why we didnt give matty ebden or matosevic a crack at stebe in the reverse singles at the very least was showing a complete lack of faith in the depth of our squad. Both have clearly improved their games from 12 months ago and giving 1 or the other the opportunity to gain some experience in this sort of environment is paramount to us ever getting back into the world group. It doesnt matter if they are out of their depth, the more they get exposed to it the better they get at handling it. Lets hope common sense prevails next time and rafter uses the occasion to find out if there is some hope for us going forward.

Common sense? Come on, lleyton is still by a solid distance our best player when playing well, especially on clay. Playing him in the final match wasn't the mistake, the error was trying to get him to play 3 matches in a row.

Matosevic or Ebden should've played the first singles, not the reverse. Its kind of bizarre to think our current #2 was not in the squad at all, especially seeing as he's actually done relatively well on clay IIRC. Anyway, I spose there's no use crying over spilt milk, hopefully they've actually learnt their lesson. Although if we make another strategic stuff up, you'd think Pat will be in trouble...

I suppose I should put the draw for 2013 in full (home teams listed first):

Canada vs. Spain
Italy vs. Croatia
Belgium vs. Serbia
USA vs. Brazil
France vs. Israel
Argentina vs. Germany
Kazahatan vs. Austria
Switerzland vs. Czech Republic

Obivously the Swiss/Czech is the best out of them
