Hey guys, have a quick question about the players who will be eligible for the mini draft this year. Are there any standouts (ala O'Meara last year) who will be obvious nominations for this year's mini draft?

Jack Martin from WA is the standout. One of the WA teams will go all out for him, could even be why they didn't have a big go at O'Meara - he is that good.

Another kid from WA is Jesse Hogan, but I haven't seen a great deal of him.

Jack Martin, Luke McDonald and Jesse Hogan are the big 3 that fall in the Jan-April deadline.

Would be touch and go between Martin and McDonald for the top pick, McDonald will pre-comit father/son to North by then, so Martin will be the big play.

Hogan is a key forward/key back similar to Micheal Hurley in alot of ways.

Martin and McDonald are probably 2 of the best 3 players in the crop at the moment, but unlike last year with plenty being eligable, the rest of the "potential" first round players in 2013 at this stage, look to be born after April 30.

Ah terrific, thanks guys. Yeah I am up to speed with this years crop of draftees (looks a beauty) - but havn't seen much of those blokes who would be vying for the mini draft. Much appreciated - thanks lads.

Couldn't the bottom team trade pick #1 for him and North couldn't do anything about it or would they have already locked him in as a First Round FS 2013?

He has to nominate for the mini draft first, if he wants to go to North he won't.

The mini-draft's just going to be another chance for WS to trade for more early draft picks. AFL should've restricted the trades to players only, after all that was the original intent.

Us getting Luke McDonald is the footy gods compensating us for the Jesse W disaster.

just an example of corporate stupidity.

they analysed what they needed to do, took measures and then proceeded to their 5 star hotel conference room for champagne and cigars and riotous backslapping. lots of yes men and no-one wanting to offer any words of caution.

it shouldnt have taken hindsight to see how it could play out. they should not have given these teams such free scope.

would have been very easy to say; compo picks must be traded for players who have 100+ games experience or 25 years + ( with any amount of experience). any picks traded back ( to an expan team) within these trades must be 2nd round or later. this would have forced them to trade for experienced players.

instead of all the first round picks they should have been given the top 2 or 3 picks, then alternating picks in the first round after the non-finals teams had selected. this would have given them very good prospects. it also would mean a less compromised draft. without most of the top 15 picks they might've put more emphasis on recruiting good experienced talent.

What could Westcoast or Freo give up for Jack Martin? I'd doubt we'd have anyone we'd be willing to give up, unless its someone like Mitch Brown? But he wouldn't be anywhere enough on his own.

Freo really need gun talls, especially a KPF and should go all out to get him. I think we'd back our talls who look the goods and just save draft picks by stocking up on mids this year.

Would be 1st Rounder + Best 22 Player at Least

This year will be interesting to see what the GWS will get for their mini-draft picks. Last year the draft was pretty thin (thanks to the GWS already taking x amount of 17 yr olds) so the GCS and Adelaide would have been more forthcoming with 1st rd picks to get O'meara and Crouch. This year the draft is supposed to be a ripper, so will a club give up a top 5 pick + another 1st rd pick for Martin ??? Is Martin THAT much better than the kids who will be available at those picks in the ND, esp considering he will have to wait another year before he can even take the field.

Like you just said, this years draft is supposed to be very strong. So a first round draft pick this year is worth a lot more then it was last year. GWS might not be able to expect as much for their prized mini-draft selections.

SA ones that come to mind are James Aish (age a factor) and Luke Dunstan (don't think he is up there with the WA lads just yet)

It depends more on the standard of the top two candidates for the mini draft relative to this year's draft rather than the strength of this year's draft on its own. If, say, John Doe is ranked as the equivalent of Whitfield as a likely pick 1 candidate for this year you're going to see a similar trade to last year (pick 4 plus a compo to get an equivalent pick 1).

It won't be us giving up the world for Jack Martin. Our gameplan doesn't revolve around any one player being elite, but an overall team effort. We will continue to add athletic and skillful players that fit our gameplan.

I read J Martin would like to play for Essendon ,... is a very keen Essendon fan , fellow Geraldton player Paddy Ryder might be an influence there . They say he is the jewel in the crown and has stood out in junior footy , if he makes the progression to senior football , Martin would be a good player to have on your list .

I like this post. Unintentionally funny?

There are 17 other teams who think exactly this. But just because the coaches say it's all about an even team performance, doesn't mean you don't go after a super talent if the opportunity is there. From what I've seen of him, Martin would make any team better - and not just as an individual.

In the past our gameplan revolved around having 2-3 elite midfielders but it doesn't anymore. I'm not sure what is funny about that. Of course all teams will be going after him but the price it will take to get him will not be worth it. The only way I see it happening is if we lose Andrew Gaff and could somehow swing a 3-way trade for Martin, but even that would be doubtful because once a player declares they are leaving you lose trade value.

I think what he was saying that no team would say no to an elite talent.
He took your point as "we don't want an elite talent because our team will be made up of average players"
