The Carlton Football Club’s disappointing 2012 season was reflected in the financial figures released today with the Club announcing a Financial Net Loss of $683,799. “This is disappointing but importantly we have made a number of important and tough decisions that impacted significantly on the 2012 financial position, but will benefit the Club on and off the field going forward,” Carlton CEO Greg Swann said. “This is the first time in six years we have not had an operating profit and the turnaround is from two areas; match returns and termination payouts. With the coaching positions now finalised and with the ongoing support of Carlton people the Club expects to return to an operating profit in 2013.” The other major impact was the termination payments to various members of Carlton’s coaching staff. Importantly, the 2013 coaching panel is now less in number and as a result will be less cost to the Club.

Ouch ................ So how much did the terminations actually cost ??? Ratten was on what, 600K ??? We must not have been running at too much of a profit even before the terminations ...........

No surprise there, since Ratten's pay check for next year is included.

Can't expect any increased match-day revenue - there's a soft draw with the minimum of matches against last year's top 8 - offset by the annual 3 home games against Rich, Coll and Ess. A home game at the MCG against Melbourne with a home game against the Hawks at Etihad???

we should never play the hawks at etihad it just doesnt make sense

Not too fussed by the financial results. Let's get back to the draft.

Out of interest..when was the last time Swann landed a substantial blow for the club?

Didn't the Tigers pay down debt and still make a $3m profit?

We have dropped the ball prior to 2012, if we picked it up in the first place. No reason why the Tigers should get 53000 members on just a wing and a prayer hope of finals while we stagnated when top 4 fancies.

We have a fickle fan base, and should never be throwing stones at Essendon bandwagoners or Tigers members who dump manure, when at least they continue to front up. Record memberships look good but not when you are falling behind.

We look to have been on the front foot so far this offseason membership wise, but a year or two too late. Somebody above the membership department should have been making sure this was taken care off long before now.

We sack Ratten in what was a close call had Malthouse not been available, are told that board members were not happy with the inconsistency, have cashed up supporters complaining to the media at how we are travelling, yet the club who are already carrying nearly $7m in interest bearing debt, had thrown another $1m for the sake of one year.

They have put all their eggs in the Malthouse basket. No excuses for failure this year. Disappointing.

A quick scan and reading of the notes accompanying shows that:

1. cash generation ( after payment of contracts to Coaches, + about $800K in debt repayment, + other costs including payment of licenses for pokie machines ) was around +$2.4M:thumbsu:

I won't comment on my forecasts - I think we are looking at significant increase in revenues looking forward...

only disappointing thing was decrease in attendances. at matches - hopefully this turns around. Carlton are certainly BIG business for media - #1 or #2 in audience ratings on FOX televised games.

InB4WayneArnold...

Only the tax department cares about P&L - since we pay no tax - focus on what matters CASH generation.

Carlton is in a much stronger financial position today than it was last year or the year before...
Carlton is now less reliant on Sponsorship down to 27% from 31% and AFL down from 22% to 19% of total revenue
Carlton revenue is up from $40.5 to $46.6 million per annum.

As an aside membership relevance to total revenue is exactly the same year on year @ 19% of total revenue - a very good effort given the fact that revenues increased by 15% and membership revenue increased by the same percentage ...

Cash on hand is now >$4.5M - put this in context of total outstanding debt of around $6.6M

We are doing very well and getting stronger...we will overtake a lot of Clubs over the next few years.;)

Disappointing result especially when compared to other clubs:

2012 AFL CLUB FINANCIAL RESULTS

Richmond: $3,017,742 profit
Hawthorn: $2,023,720 profit
North Melbourne: $1,193,080 operating profit

A huge payout for Ratten... why was he given so many years extra on his contract when the results weren't forthcoming? Maybe some executives can take a pay-cut for poor decisions made.
I hope they aren't asking for bonuses etc..

Pray tell - why is this a disappointing result?

Football Club's are about results. The team under Ratten was going to cost us eventually.

Should we have kept him and been shit for another year just to save some dollars?

We were only shit for one year under Ratten and had the worst injury run in decades.

My biggest issue is that people were hiding behind the curtain agitating for this, so I was under the impression they would put their hands in their pockets to pay for it. Perhaps the fact that these people already give us money means that on this occasion, they told us what we should be doing with their money?

We have been paying down the debt every year, our memberships went up, our crowds went down, we paid out coaches and we had a large loss. This was not where we were supposed to be placed.

I guess if there will be extra money forthcoming from our benefactors, they might hold off and announce it next year for a huge profit, rather than have a negligible profit this year. I don't like hearing from the club how disappointed they are, when they are the only ones that can do something about it.

Geez, listen to me will ya!

We didn't have a large loss - in fact our cash in the bank increased by over 100% YoY AFTER all costs associated with regime change ( for all intents and purposes our cash is about equal to our debt obligations by June )- these are the facts of the matter...

not sure what the fuss is about. we had to pay out contracts and still only escaped with a relatively ok loss figure. No need to hit the panic stations.

record membership. 6 million increase in funds

Revenue:
  • Essendon – $65,431,425
  • Hawthorn – $57,277,620
  • Carlton – $46,637,015 (up $6 million on 2011)
  • Richmond – $37,640,767
  • Membership, reserved seating
    • Essendon – $9,367,066
    • Hawthorn – $9,028,307
    • Carlton – $8,953,054
    • Richmond – $5,050,000 (membership only)
Football Department Spend
  • Carlton – $20,349,646
  • Essendon – $19,200,704
Merchandise Income:
  • Essendon – $3,226,302
  • Hawthorn – $2,700,000
  • Carlton – $1,902,671
Plus paying off 750k worth of debt.

Its not a bad year. Comparing us to Richmond (Fighting Tiger Fund) and North (In the Box) or even Essendon (Flight Plan) who have their hands out to the members for fundraising is pointless, unless we were doing a similar campaign.

No panic stations. Just reckon that those who lobbied for the coach sackings should have paid for them. Surprised that we opted to spend more money considering we still have a decent amount of debt, in the hope of making more money next year. A bit of a risk.

I guess they are hoping that a new coach will bring in 10k more members, averaging $180 per membership and voila the sackings are paid for. I'd argue that the early start and improved membership department should account for much of that anyway though.

Thanks Wookie. You're all over this stuff.

Do you know where the extra $6m went? I think we paid back a similar amount of debt last year so that shouldn't be the expenditure. An extra $1m in payouts counts, but not sure about anything else.

Also, where were our biggest revenue gains? I saw that sponsorship went down % wise but maybe not $ wise and we lost on attendances. Slight gains membership wise. Anything else?
