2013 24 hours of Le Mans

Do they know what the cause of death was? The crash didn't look too bad and the car was still largely intact.

If you mean the chassis , then yeah it doesn't seem to have any bends etc ( may be different on closer inspection )
Pretty much every part of this car that CAN come off DID come off through the force of the impact. , ( which from accounts was against the armco and a tree behind it. )
As i said earlier , it's wasn't just one piece of bad luck/misfortune that did him in , it was about 3 or 4.

A side-on drivers side impact , i'm only speculating but human necks aren't designed to go sideways , the marshall's reactions when they got to the wreck spoke volumes to me.

Explains why the HANS device clearly didn't work as well.

Yeah that's probably it, just a very unfortunate accident. I watched the footage on youtube last night and at the time the commentators didn't seem to give it much focus. Just one of those freak accidents I guess.
