The 2013 NRL commercial was launched today.

The theme ‘Something’s got a hold on me’ performed by Jessica Mauboy sees the return of a female lead for the NRL brand – the first time since Tina Turner revolutionised sport marketing around the world with ‘Simply the Best’.

“Rugby League is a game that brings people together and our new commercial reflects how important the sport is to our community,” General Manager Marketing and Commercial, Mr Paul Kind said.
“We are so excited to have Jessica as our ambassador, it is a real coup to have Australia’s leading female artist as the voice of the game.
“Jessica is a huge Rugby League fan and we believe fans are really going to embrace this campaign.

The commercial itself is great, really focussing on what we as game want want to put out there - the connection between junior players, fans & members with the players along with clearly showing kids that in Rugby League they can play the elite level at three successful levels - club, state, international.

Mauboy was a great selection, good singer & in a way I think the song is aimed at females.

I haven't tried to make my own yet but that's a great idea.

I think it's a great ad designed to appeal to young people and women as you say. I heard Greg Alexander and John Gibbs on sydney radio saying they thought the highlights in the ad were intentionally 'soft' (i.e. not many big hits) ... which they didn't like. But you don't really need to target the die hard blokey fans with the campaign ad. I think it's pretty smart what they've put together.
