Hendo - has found his niche across HB
Brown - the club has invested heavily in 2013 by playing most games
Laird - reminds me of Dean Laidley the Junk Yard Dog and hasn't lowered his colors to much in 2013
Grigg - one innings doesn't make a summer however showed today (showdown) that he has class and poise
Lyon and Kerridge have both had their moments and break out games
Lynch, JJ and LJ could all be even better with Tex in the side

For me the big question mark is Sando, he has the ingredients however he needs to find the right receipt even if it means moving on a few more senior players

One positive thing this year will be remembered for is the amount of young players that have come in and made an immediate impact. I can't remember a period in our history where there has been a gold nugget under each rock we turn over. The older players have fallen away rapidly though. If they had held 2012 form who knows where we would be.

Great post. The performances of laird and crouchy in particular have me feeling good about the future. Agree about Sando too. Im not sure who was in the centre for the last five mins but i just remember seeing Thommo a step behind his opponent seemingly at every bounce. Needed grigg, danger and crouchy in there in that last five minutes to actually win a clearance.

Hardwick in his first couple of years sucked ......or did he not have the experienced cattle on hand

Malthouse widely tipped to progress Carlton this year ....instead goes backward ....so is he now a dud coach

Sanderson ....2nd year has to change gameplan on back of new forward line .....he stated "manufacture goals"
IMO we have been highly competitive all year .....had 4-5 first year players in the side at stages which is very unusual for sides expecting to win

Under circumstances Sanderson has managed a difficult year better than some here suggest

You make a good point about the senior players. I think we have a lot of young players who have exceeded expectations but our seniors have degraded at a much faster rate.

Callinan, Johncock, Reilly, Porplyzia, Thompson, Jacobs and Van Berlo all went backwards this year. Add the Walker injury and losing Tippett and it doesn't matter how many good youngsters we have. We simply can't recoup those kind of losses.

The one thing that helps me sleep at night is knowing that we have a young side which will improve in the next few years. When we have a better balance of experience, bigger bodies and maybe some fresh ideas in the coaching box, we'll win more games of footy.

I've had my issues with him, but I suppose it's a lot like the younger players. You get senior players/coaches making blues and have an expectation that it shouldn't happen, but you might give a bit of leeway to someone who's not as experienced in their first or second year.

Also add bringing in Grigg and playing him as a sub and then dropping him the next week.

Apart.fom one game against Sydney we have been competitive all year.

This is with having a young backline and needing Danger to play two roles. Our backline is gelling into quite a good unit.

We lost Tex, but got to see which guys we can partner with him.
We are one of the younger teams in the comp and the main positive this year has been about seeing what these guys can do.

IMO 2015-18 should be a nice period.

Well, considering we have fitness freaks like VB, Kerridge, Tex and co, I reckon they wouldn't be all that bad. Fitness was not one of the reasons why we lost to Port today.

Some things look good, but others are still less than adequate - if the poor form of Jacobs continues we still have no other ruckman on the list we're willing to pick instead of him.

We still have issues in the midfield. As well as our game plan needing to be thrown out and started again, we need to move some assistant coaches on to bring in some fresh ideas. Camporeale, Bickley and Clarke have been here for a very long time, and don't appear to have achieved a whole lot, nor have a whole lot of different things left on the shelf to try. We still also lack midfield run and carry, too many one paced in an under types. If Smith isn't going to be a pure mid next season then we're going nowhere.

Not enough creativity across half back. Henderson is good with his intercept marks, but all too often his next kick is basically long up the line to a tall and pack. Henderson should be doing the run and carry sort of stuff to break zones, while we need someone else back there who can break them the other way, with excellent decision making and pinpoint passes. Mackay is not that player, nor are Brown or Laird. Otten can't even pinpoint a player standing on his own 20m away.

We need to make our dysfunctional forward line functional again. Perhaps we could consider something similar to Sydney - run three talls (Walker, Johnston, Jenkins) with Jenkins doing the ruck chop out, play Lynch almost on a wing, play a small forward who actually knows how to position properly and finish (Wright, or as much as I dislike buying a small forward, Betts), and use the midfield to do the bullocking pressure work. We're supposed to be a fit team, our midfield should be able to do that.

He has had a stinker of a year.

Poorly handled our senior players (too much faith)
Poorly handled our young players (not enough faith)
Poorly handled the start of season (half hearted NAB cup performances - thinking it was "just going to happen")
Letting our skill level fall away (dunno if this is a lack of skills focus at training?)
Ongoing failure of the team to tackle (address it, practice it, still fail - drop the players)
Ongoing failure of the team goal kicking (address it, practice it, still fail drop the players)

Now we go to his game day performances, has been out coached a number of times but this has been made worse by the poor selections that have hampered him come game day.

I still have faith though, he was good last year hence why he gave too much lee way to the under performing senior players this year.

I'm sure he will disect what didn't work this year and be better for it next year.

I wish I could be really positive about the future because it has a lot of potential. Unfortunately I have zero faith in the administration of the club to do the things required to fulfil that potential. I fear we'll do more of the same for the same results. It is a hopeless feeling.
