The first of the North American summer big events is here with the men in Toronto and the women in Montreal. Here are the draws:

Men's: http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2014/421/mds.pdf
Women's: http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/posting/2014/806/MDS.pdf

Nadal taken out of the men's gives the favoritism to Djokovic but first week back after a slam/break is always a tricky unknown. Djokovic does have a tough draw with Stepanek/Monfils in the 2nd and probably Tsonga in the 3rd (even though he wiped him in Paris). With Murray & Gasquet, the quarter is loaded. Federer has the winner of Janowicz/Polansky before facing a tricky Cilic. Two Aussies in the draw with chances for both. Hewitt plays Benneteau which will be gritty but can win that and then gulbis is waiting int he 2nd, hopefully he's been partying a bit much lately. Kyrgios has Giraldo, tough but again winnable and then a fun possible matchup against Murray. I'll let everyone imagine that matchup. A whole bunch are in qualies too, we should get one qualifier with Matosevic (defending a QF here) playing Reid in the first round of the qualies while the winner plays Kokkansis or a 1000 ranked local Canadian. Ebden, Tomic & Duckworth are all playing too. Groth would be here as well but has made the semis of dubs in Washington.

The women are missing Halep and Li but we should some interesting stories with Serena trying to get it back, azarenka trying to recover from her injury, Bouchard and her year, Sharapova etc. Stosur is playing a qualifier in the 1st round, if she manages to keep a ball in court and maybe even win this match, Serena is waiting in the 2nd. Dellacqua will face Flipkens, can certainly win that but then Kvitova should destroy her in the 2nd round.

Coverage on ESPN for the men's all week starting at 1am and going throughout the morning. Women will have the usual last couple of days on Fox Sports. tennistv.com will have all week coverage too for men and women.

Shame the time zone is not Australian audience viewing friendly. Do you reckon ESPN or EPSN2 will do replays during the day/evening?

Tomic won in 3 and kokkinakis got the win by forfeit over matosevic. Marinko retired after winning the first set in a tiebreak. Not sure what is wrong with him.

Congrats to the kokk for his first md masters series tournament.

Ok just noticed the main draw and matosevic has a spot in the main draw as a lucky loser. So not sure what is gping on, if he has a genuine injury or was allowing kokkinakis through to the md.

Aussies in the first round:
Marinko vs ggl. If fit, a winnable match for mad dog.

Hewitt v benneteau. Tough match for lleyton, not the kind of matchup I'm confident of him winning anymore.

Kyrgios vs giraldo. First match since wimbledon I think. Hard to predict how he will go. Murray in the second round if he wins.

Tomic v karlovic. Tomic the favourite. Would play Gasquet or pospisil in the second roubd, who just had a great match in Washington sf.

Kokkinakis v Anderson. Anderson to win that pretty comfortably.

He retired because he was already in as a lucky loser due to an earlier withdrawal. His retirement allowed for TK to be in the draw.

When I saw Marinko retired I was hoping that there was LL spot and thankfully there is. Although, I wonder if it was to let Kokkansis through as there' s a few points he misses out and he'll need every point he get with the amount he'll most likely lose this week.

Looks like ESPN2 has 3 hours (5-8pm) alloted for replays but I always find easier just to IQ everything and then I can go through what I want to watch (got the Washington final on as I type)

4 out of the 5 aussies are in action tomorrow. Lleyton is on centre court at not before 3am with Kokkansis 2nd on Grandstand and Tomic on afterwards (so again 3am onwards). Have a day off tomorrow so I might do the early morning wake up, really to see how Kokkansis is travelling, haven't seen him play since AO much. Matosevic is on an outside court, as long as he's fit it's a good draw. I suspect lleyton's match will be ugly, it's just that sort of matchup.

Ebden lost in straights to Brayden Schnur. Never heard of him but it appears the only tournament outside Canada he has played is a futures in the US where he lost to someone ranked 2050.

This guy did end up qualifying, another nice little story for the Canadians.

Marinko only misses out on 9 points for going in as LL rather than qualifying - in the context of the 205 he's defending it hardly matters.

I've watched Kokkinakis' QFs in Lexington (def Bemelmans in 2 tie-breaks) and Vancouver (lost to Ward in straight sets). Didn't see him at AO so can't comment on any improvement but my observation has been that he generally has a nice game - but a bit 1-dimensional (can't volley at all) and throws in 1 really soft service game per set which lets him down.

He really dominated Bemelmans but ended up scraping through, and didn't quite have the guile to break down Ward who camped 5m behind the baseline and mainly just retrieved balls.

Exactly why he needs all the points he can get considering he'll be losing most of those 205 most likely will be lost.

All a bit strange the Matosevic retirement. Could have easily just played out a 4-6 3-6 sort of scoreline, finishing points off quickly, if the intention was to take the LL spot and give Kokkinakis a leg up.

About time all tournaments take up the grand slams policy of awarding lucky loser spots.

There was one dodgy betting match earlier in the year where Dellacqua breadsticked/bagelled some girl in qualies on clay and then the girl she beat was backed from heavy outsider to clear favourite against Nara after receiving the LL spot.

Hewitt may as well of put his son out there. Hewitt played garbage tennis. 1-6, 2-6

Kokkansis is a set up against anderson before he was broken in the 2nd and is now coming back from the rain delay 4-2 down, playing well but the weaknesses are looking they are being worked out by Anderson.

Matosevic ended up pulling out with should injury. Been a heap of rain delays this morning

Damn, The Kok went down to Anderson. Did well to take the first set. Some of his shot selection was a bit off after the rain delay.

Great effort by Kokkinakis against Anderson. Nishikori has pulled out with a foot injury. Night session should be fun tomorrow. Polansky/Federer then Paire/Wawrinka.

In Montreal Sam has Puig first up then Serena if she wins. Casey has Flipkens then Kvitova if she wins. Aussie Tomljanovic lost to Rogers in straights.

Wow, Janowicz really has to get his head right. Total meltdown. What happened to that guy?

Good win for Kyrgios against Giraldo. I've got no idea but I would've thought a win over a top 30 guy like that is massive for his confidence - to prove to himself if nobody else that Wimbledon wasn't a) a fluke or b) a grass court anomaly.

Yeah good win for Nick, Giraldo is having a solid year he also served for the first set. Paire/Wawrinka locked in a good match 3-3 in the third. Stosur won 6-2 6-2 next up is Serena. Casey won in 3 and she plays Kvitova.

Solid win by Nick. Big statement towards proving he's not just a one hit wonder.

Tomic unlucky in two tight tiebreakers against the human rocket launcher

Good stuff by Nick, the scary thing is I don't think Nick played that great (neither did Giraldo) and he'll need to step up against Murray. It'll be on 1am, there is no rain forecasted for the rest of the week so it should on at 1.

Can't believe Sam won that easily, she plays Serena not before 8am and then Casey plays Kvitova not before 10am, I can't see either winning but good to see Casey confirming her US Open seeding most likely.

Bouchard bombed out today as well.

Sam played Puig the other week and won by similar score. Puig must hate playing her because it cant be Sam playing good haha.
