Maybe Marchbank or Goddard at a real stretch.

I'm very interested to see where we I this year

Especially later picks and what we do with them.

I wonder if the club will take chances on bigger players as opposed to smaller one late in the draft instead of "best available" that late in the draft really means nothing

Assuming Melbourne has no bonus pick from Frawley/PP, Saints going #1 to #3 and GWS taking Petracca still gives Saints one of the two KPFs. I suspect O'Rourke + 3 + 19 would do it, giving the Saints an extra top 20 pick.

Over on the Saints board, they appear to be demanding a GWS first-team mid for the upgrade, so if those are the terms I'd probably go 'meh' and just take another KPF if Petracca and Bradshaw were gone.

Thats actually a very reasonable deal although the stumbling block may be Frawley FA compo getting in the way.

I suspect StK want either Petracca or McCartin (Petracca favoured) and with Melb all over Brayshaw with pick 2, pick 3 likely gets StK McCartin.

Best available later in the draft, and for rookies is a nonsense. These picks should be for medium to long term needs and list balance

And just for Doggies fans when predicting who is avail at your first pick, I'm hearing StK rate Petracca, McCartin and Ahern the best from this draft. Ahern was a bit of a surprise to me but apparently we really rate him. That's mainly coming from Brett Anderson who seems to be quite knowledgable on all thing St Kilda.

If the StK/GWS exchange of first round picks happens, don't be surprised if StK pick Ahern with pick 3/4 (depending on Frawley).

Yeah Ahern could definitely be a bolter if he interviews / tests well. That would be great for pushing Wright / McCartin to us.

I wish the AFL draft was as advanced as the NBA draft where there is live trades and movement. We could keep our pick and if one of the KPF's we want don't fall to our pick, have a pre-arranged deal with a club to trade back to say pick 12/13 and get an additional 2nd or 3rd round pick if another club loves a guy at our slot. The AFL is slowly getting there, but not quite yet. From a fan / forum point of view, I can't wait until future pick trading is possible, I just pray we aren't like the Knicks and trade away future 1st ever year for garbage... I feel that will be Carlton :D

Brett Anderson even had us 'considering' Ahern at pick 1. Well he said he was on our shortlist with Petracca and McCartin. So if we have pick 4 and Petracca and McCartin are both gone, which is a strong possibility, then Ahern would be my favourite to go. I guess that leaves Wright for you guys!

Brisbane will take him though

No that leaves Wright for Brissy :(

True. I guess theres two main factors shaping the top 5.
1. StK & GWS exchange of first rounders; and
2. Frawley compensation.
Precisely. So we obviously dont want either to happen unless we have a trade worked out with the Dees to get pick 2 in which case we DO want Frawley compensation ;)

Without the 2 scenarios panning out we have a good chance of landing Wright:

1. Stk - Petracca
2. Melb - Brayshaw
3. GWS - Lever
4. Bris - McCartin
5. Dogs - Wright

But as said, if we really want Wright we should be able to get him if it involves trading up the draft order

3. Roos trading out for an established gun.

I wonder how GWS view Ahern.
In my opinion they need a player like him more than one like Lever or Durdin...
And definitely more than one like Wright or McCartin

Laverne is someone who could easily bolt too with a good Combine. Flexibility, speed and skill is something all teams are always looking for.

Definitely can see Laverde bolting, Jets really missed when he wouldn't play
Still think he rushes his decisions, hopefully that would be something that tidies up at AFL level (only if we drafted him though) ;)

Sort of want the other players to succeed, but a part of me really doesn't :p

You prefer lever?

If you asked this a couple months ago, I would have said Lever without a doubt. But after hearing the news on Jonathon Patton and Alex Johnson (was told young Conlon and Max Gawn had two as well), I'm kind of scared off by knee reco's in young key position player's now. Once they do one, the percentage seems to be quite high that they will do another one. If they don't re occur, soft tissue injuries can be an issue. Mitch Brown from West Coast is one these off the top of my head. I guess the problem is they have to add weight/muscle which puts added stress on the body and they break down. So to answer your question, I'm a no on Lever. I'd rather we took less of a risk with a top 5 pick.

Who would I take if Wright, Petracca and McCartin are all gone? Well I'd prefer we traded it down as I find the draft very even after these 3 guys are gone and I'd be surprised if they were available. But if we happen to keep it, it's choice between Goddard and Durdin for me. Goddard is underrated in my opinion. Up forward he can be a bit of a spud, but every time I've seen play in defence he's destroyed his opponent. I'm not talking about crap opponents either, I've seen him play on Darcy Moore a couple times and Durdin as well. He just looks like a natural back there. Reads the play well, is very athletic and is very competitive one on one. He's spent most of his career as a forward so he does have plenty of upside as well. If I have one major issue it would be on his rebound work. He doesn't get a lot of it and his kicking can be very lazy. While his lazy kicking doesn't usually cost his team at this level, it will at AFL level. I think it's very much up in the air whether Talia, Roughead and Roberts can play on the real athletic forwards like Franklin, Gunston etc. Goddard could definitely do it which is why I think we would be interested.

Other player's that come to mind

Marchbank played one of the best games that I've seen this year in the champs playing as a 3rd tall. Took a lot of intercept marks and seems athletic enough to play this position at AFL. Is still a bit unknown to me playing on the 1st/2nd tall forwards and has an injury history. Hasn't played a great deal of footy in the last two or so years. Not someone I'd take with pick 5, I'd be all for him if we can trade the pick down though

Leverde - He can be pretty hot and cold at times. I've seen him being mentioned as a possible top 5 pick to Melbourne, no way could I pick him this high and I'd be surprised if we do too. I don't think he showed a great amount of improvement like the Bont and Macrae. I understand why he could a top 10 pick, but not top 5.

Weller - I really like, but does lack a bit of size. I'd still take him top 10. Great kick.

Duggan - Would like to see him get in the contest a lot more and I don't think he backs his kicking in enough either. Tends to go with the easy option. Not a bad trade down option however

Clem Smith - Plays a bit like Clay, but no he's isn't and doesn't deserve his last name

Brayshaw - Not for us. Looks a lot like Joffrey from game of thrones, so he would be the perfect fit for those scums at Carlton

Ahearn - Plays in bursts, smallish. No I wouldn't be prepared to give up a top 10 pick for him.

Pickett - Yeah I'm not a fan. Lazy and I question what his role will be at AFL level. I wouldn't be taking him in the top 20.

Tom Lamb - Has talent galore and he's been playing everywhere lately. He's not the greatest kick so I'd rather not go there even if he's available at our 2nd pick.

Corey Ellis - I really like him for our 2nd pick along with Menadue

Someone that hasn't been mentioned before, I'd really like us to rookie list Bailey Dale. Has had a pretty good last month and is a quick, run and carry type with good skills. I think we should try to add a couple quick players to the rookie list whoever that might be.

These picks are going to be long shots at best, the last thing you want to do is narrow the field by selecting for needs late in the draft.
