Hey guys, sorry for the intrusion. I was wondering how many selections you guys have to make on Friday night, based on list spots, etc. I'm doing a phantom draft and need this info.

For example North has to make 4 selections because we have 4 primary list spots open. Appreciate the help!

Yeah I reckon he's a true swingman. Could be very handy.

Marshall I'm getting excited about after hearing Dal's into him.

Is GWS expected to match a bid for Sproule if it came within the top #30?

Yeah I've jumped on the Marshall bandwagon after I stopped thinking of him as a 'true' KPP. He'd be a hard matchup and compliment Boyd well.

Here's an article on Cedric Cox. I'm thinking he'll be gone by our second pick, but good on the kid for trying to change his life.

Camperdown plays role in AFL draft hopeful Cedric Cox's journey

JO and Mick Saunders didn’t hesitate when asked to house a teenage football recruit for the 2016 season.

It took the parents of four – now empty-nesters – less than five minutes to agree.

And so they welcomed Cedric Cox into their Camperdown home for what Jo describes as “an unexpected winter”.

“It’s not hard to bring someone into your home and look after them, that, to me, is the easiest thing,” she said.

“It’s been very different from what we expected because we weren’t expecting the roller-coaster it’s been heading towards the (AFL) draft.”

Cox, 19, landed in Camperdown from the remote Western Australian community of Halls Creek in March.

He wanted to carve a better life for himself. And football, the sport where he dazzles with his pace and foot skills, gave him that opportunity.

The decision to move 4000 kilometres away opened doors – starring roles for Camperdown turned into Hampden interleague selection which caught TAC Cup North Ballarat Rebels’ attention.

AFL clubs came calling, thick and fast.

In the background, the Saunders were swept up in Cox’s journey.

The Camperdown-based teachers – Mick works at St Patrick’s Primary School and Jo at Mercy Regional College – found it was opening doors for them too.

“We also reconnected with the football club, which was nice,” Jo said.

“They were really welcoming because we know everyone there, being such a small club.

“Our kids had played there but only as juniors and (then this year) we started going up there on Thursdays for dinners.”

Mick watched with pride as Cox climbed the football ladder.

“We were just happy to have him involved in the local footy and then all of a sudden we found ourselves driving him to Warrnambool for interleague training and then taking him to Ballarat to introduce him to Gerard (FitzGerald) and the crew up there,” he said.

“And to Melbourne when he made the Victorian under 19 team, we took him down there to train a couple of times. Then it was most Thursday nights, going to Lismore and picking him up off of the bus.

“James Castles’ wife Chelsea would run him out to Lismore and he’d hop on the bus there and I’d pick him up on the bus at 8.30pm.

Cedric Cox talks about his football journey from Halls Creek to Camperdown

Off the field, the reserved Cox thrived too.

He found work at Loaf and Lounge bakery, working four days a week before football commitments lessened his hours.

Workmate Tom Henry would pick Cox up at 2am and they’d head in for their shifts.

“He’s made some really good friends and they’ve supported him too,” Mick said.

“And most Saturday nights we didn’t see him – he’d go off with his friends, they’d go camping and hunting, he loves to shoot rabbits.

“He was able to keep that country boy aspect of his life.”

Jo, who would make a batch of “lucky biscuits” for AFL recruiters’ visits, said Cox’s easygoing nature helped him settle into a new lifestyle.

“Mick made the comment the other week that the friends he’s made, it’s not because he’s a good footballer, it’s because he’s a nice guy,” she said.

The significance of the Saunders’ impact on his life is not lost on Cox.

“I have loved their company, and their background and their family,” he said.

“It’s really great and they treat me like a son.”

Camperdown reserves coach James Castles, who met Cox during a teaching year in Halls Creek, is another important figure in his life.

“He’s been a big influence, bringing me down here and always keeping that contact when I was back in the Kimberleys,” Cox said.

“He’s the one who wanted me to do something with my life and put my life on track. I respect him a lot.

“If it wasn’t for him, I would not be here right now.”

This year has been one of firsts for Cox.

Working in the bakery was eye-opening – he “wanted to try something that I’d never done before” – and even aspects of football were foreign to him.

“Back at home we never had a structured plan or anything like that,” Cox said.

“It was basically grab the ball and run with it and see what you can do.

“Down here it’s all about structures and training hard – we never used to have full trainings or pre-season training.

“It is great learning all this stuff and how they do footy down this side (of the country) and learning about what you can develop more.”

Cox played 10 games for Camperdown before he was talent-spotted and joined TAC Cup ranks. But he won’t undersell the Magpies’ role in his development.

“Fitting in was pretty hard. I didn’t know any of the players until a couple of weeks later,” Cox said of his pre-season arrival at Leura Oval.

“Now I know every single one of them and it was really great playing for them and playing for their club.”

Cox is one of six siblings and remains in contact with his family in Halls Creek.

He returned home to relax after the season and will have them on Skype during the draft telecast so they can share the moment too.

One of his brothers, Daniel, had his own football journey in 2016, finishing runner-up on TV show The Recruit. Cox was proud of his more outgoing brother’s efforts.

“He’s always the loudest one in the family; he’s always the centre of attention,” he said, tongue-in-cheek.

If they get picks taken off them then I'd guess probably not. Otherwise they've got plenty of points.

I'm still very concerned about Marshall if, like we seem to be insinuating, he can't develop as a KPF. It's all well and good to be an athletic KPF, but the standards get much, much higher if you're moving into the midfield or off a flank. Doesn't have the elite speed or agility for a big man which would get me excited.

Also, if Oliver Florent isn't taken by Norf at 11, he'll almost a certainty to be available at our selection. Wants to stay in Victoria, and who could blame him, and has really, really good attributes. Doesn't exactly fill a list need but I reckon Dal would be willing to pounce if no one takes him.

Maybe we get lucky at our second pick & get a player that should never have slid that far

I don't think its a given if Marshall is available at our first pick that we take him, it has to depend who else is available

We've been on so much of a roll lately that it wouldn't shock me if Marshall turns out to be the best key position player out of this draft

I wouldn't know him if he popped up out of my Wheaties. What does he do?

Well he can pick the ball off the ground about as cleanly as the Bont. He's also a pretty good kick and is capable of pulling off the odd freakish pass. He also has good hands on the lead. You don't really see him baulk, side step opponents and run away from them like Cyril. Nor do you see him kick goals out of packs, but I guess the role he plays might have something to do with it. I don't know, I tend to think the Cyril call is a bit of wishful thinking.

No I can't see them matching, that's too high to be picking him.
I'm not a Sproule fan as a forward though. Good athlete that runs around a lot. Don't think he's overly smart and lacks presence up forward. Looks better behind the ball in my opinion, even then still has some way to go especially with his body positioning.

I dont think we can overlook Marshall if he is there. He has had limited experience in the AFl system after having such a large focus on cricket he screams potential. Is quick on the ground and is strong overhead hes not massive in terms of size now but we have cloke to cover his position for a couple of years to let him develop into the key forward he can become. Inconsistency is his only criticism however that was the same for the Bont. Give him time and he could be boydy's partner in crime.

Really struggling to warm to the idea of picking Marshall. He reminds me a lot of Tim O'Brien from Hawthorn. Tall and skinny, very little forward presence. Plus he isn't a great shot on goal. I don't see what role we see him playing going forward or what is so appealing about him. Doesn't appear to have a lot of mongrel which you need as a forward to win 1 on 1's and the ball in general. Sure we might see some potential but he's going to take a while to show anything at all and even then I'm not sold on him going forward. If it's true that he isn't a great mark then what's the point in picking a player that tall? Wastes any length he has if he's not able to pluck the ball out of the air.

Emma Quayle's write up

WESTERN BULLDOGS

In: Travis Cloke.
Out: Jed Adcock, Luke Goetz, Joel Hamling, Nathan Hrovat, Will Minson, Josh Prudden, Koby Stevens.
Draft picks: 18, 26, 50, 74.

TALL FORWARDS: Tom Boyd, Jack Redpath, Travis Cloke, Zaine Cordy.
TALL DEFENDERS: Dale Morris, Fletcher Roberts, Marcus Adams, Kieran Collins.
SMALL/MEDIUM FORWARDS: Jake Stringer, Stewart Crameri, Tory Dickson, Toby McLean, Bailey Dale, Mitch Honeychurch.
SMALL/MEDIUM DEFENDERS: Easton Wood, Bob Murphy, Jason Johannisen, Matthew Boyd, Matthew Suckling, Shane Biggs, Bailey Williams, Brad Lynch, Roarke Smith (rookie).
MIDFIELDERS: Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore, Luke Dahlhaus, Jackson Macrae, Mitch Wallis, Liam Picken, Lachie Hunter, Caleb Daniel, Josh Dunkley, Clay Smith, Lin Jong, Lukas Webb, Declan Hamilton.
RUCKS: Jordan Roughead, Tom Campbell.

The Bulldogs will have some decent options as their first choice and could get a look at Todd Marshall, who started the year as the standout key forward but tired as the year went by and seems to be making his way down the order. His form early was highly athletic and extremely promising, so he'd be well worth a look. The foot skills and versatility of Alex Witherden could appeal, and Jordan Gallucci has the sort of versatility the Dogs have valued in recent seasons. It seems highly unlikely Tim English will get to them but stranger things have happened with ruck prospects in strong drafts. The Dogs are one of only a couple of clubs to have gone to Halls Creek, the home of Cedric Cox, who moved to Camperdown this year and was brought into the North Ballarat Rebels side mid-year. His pace off half-back, skills on both sides and overall enthusiasm mean he could be the one for their first pick; he might be snapped up before they choose again. It will be interesting to see whether the Dogs are spooked by Marcus Adams' mini-effort to get back to Perth during the trade period, having just lost Joel Hamling to Fremantle. If they have some concerns he might not sign a new contract, they could use a later pick to bring another tall back in even though they drafted Kieran Collins this time last year. Harrison Macreadie and Jack Maibaum are two who could be looked at; Macreadie is from the GWS Academy, like Kobe Mutch, an onballer they could think about. The Bulldogs have no desperate need for anything; they like multi-position players who know how to tackle and apply pressure and can be expected to look for those things again.

We're interviewing kids in Warrnambool today and Adelaide tomorrow. Have been all over Australia. Townsville, Darwin last week.
Wouldn't be surprised if we are doing some scouting for Footscray. Sign the kids up in the VFL and reconsider next year

Can see Marshall being a pretty unpopular pick if we take him but we had an unpopular pick last year who was a premiership player 11 months later and another unpopular pick a couple of years earlier who is now one of the best players in the league so that doesn't really count for much.

What I like about him is how clean he seems to be both below his knees and in the air, a real one grab player. The scope for improvement is huge as well with him never having done a football preseason due to cricket commitments/injury. We'd need to be patient with him and give him at least a couple of preseasons to improve his strength and fitness which would irk today's impatient fans obsessed with immediate results, but I think we're in a good position to take a bit of a punt on a guy who has some exciting ingredients and is generally considered the best tall forward in the draft but is a bit risky and could take a while.

Good thing for Marshall is that he doesn't need to be our forward savior like the old days.
He can have 3-4 years to develop in the right system instead of coming out of the blocks and play afl from day 1.

Cloke, Redpath, Boyd, Stringer, Crameri and Dickson etc will carry the load till he is ready

exactly right, this is what ive been saying for ages, plus we have 100% control of our players now with Footscray

I've started watching some videos and doing some reading recently and I've gotta say I'm surprised by the people that say they aren't particularly keen on most players this year. There are about 10-15 guys I want with our first two selections.

To be fair, highlight videos are generally going to flatter the higher-rated players. Generally won't show the negative things a player does. But, still, there are some really good options around our picks.

For sure, but there have been some comments about being disappointed in a lot of the highlight videos or less impressed compared to previous years. Wasn't suggesting that I'm well across the draft pool this year (I'm not) just more impressed than others have been.

Your thoughts on Battle then?
