Your thoughts on Battle then?
I like him.

Reminds me a little of Membrey in that he's a medium type that plays a tad taller and invites calls of, "Too short, has to be able to play midfield." Then after a bit of development he starts showing that despite that height he remains able to kick goals.

There's certainly a place for specialist medium forwards in my opinion, you just have to be careful not to overload your side with them. He's a proven goalkicker and those innate skills, combined with a very good understanding of the game and excellent motor seem transferrable.

All on limited viewing of course. I understand why he's not a first round selection but I also think he is an excellent pick in or near the 20s.

Club could reach for Battle? Wonder if Port like him for one of their picks. That all but confirms that Hayward will be gone by our pick.

Suspect with academy picks that ours will be 20 or 21. So wouldn't read too much into that list in regards to us, apart from Marshall isn't on the list, so could still be available.

No Marshall - looking more and more likely that he's ours I reckon. Assuming the mail that we are keen is good (and no reason to doubt it coming from Pann), I wonder who it would take still being on the board for us to overlook him. Someone like Simpkin perhaps?

I think given our age profile, we are the perfect fit for him. Can mature over the next few yrs alongside cloke/Boyd at training. I'm not buying into any fears about him. If Dal wants him, dal can have him (if he lasts). What I'm curious on is how much influence bevo would have on who we target and how we rank guys on our draft board..

I might be biased but I reckon Bevo could turn pretty much anyone mentioned in the top 30 into a star!

You'd hope so. Even if only 50% of our picks work out, we should have sustained success for the next 5yrs. I'm just curious whether bevo would get much input into the final order of how we rank the lads.

not so much final say on order, more the type of players he wants. his first draft i really believe he would have wanted players with good skills.

its about adding to our depth charts and guys like marshall do that.

But the final order and players he would want would go hand in hand surely. If there are two comparable players but we favour a fwd, then he gets bumped up the list ahead of the other one for example.

The coach has a big say in interviews and whether he thinks he can work with them or not. The talent assessment is very much the recruiter's job. They are the ones watching the games every week, they watch over 100+ live games a year and there's probably around half a dozen or so doing that. Plus there would be more part timers and scouts as well. The coaches would watch 10 live games of junior footy a year if that. Obviously the coach would still give some input on what he thinks of the player and whether he thinks he fits into the team structure and all that. But ultimately the recruiter gets the final call and would back his assessment of the player in. It's his job and his bum on the line.

I guess an example would be when Brendan McCartney really wanted Wines for instance. Dalrymple said no, I rate Macrae higher and that was that.

Sam Landsberger thinks otherwise:

Yeah I've been reading all night about Port's picks and it seems to be going that way. I think I need a day off I'm getting a bit obsessed.

I think it comes down to if they want Marshall or Battle, who apparently they are interested in too.

Lol, I feel there may be another Collins type event with us all getting really anxious about Marshall until our pick.

This will all happen only for our second pick to turn out to be an absolute star and our keening misplaced.

Don't stress it too much - surely we have confidence in our recruiting team to make a very good decision at each pick? Our team have the best record in the competition over the past 5 years.

I've got great faith in whoever Dal picks, but it sounds like he's really into Marshall. And I like the idea of him being into a boom or bust type rather than a safer pick. I'd love to see Marshall develop with us. Also because it sounds like we've got some interesting ideas about how he should play (not a KPF for example).

Having said that I'm sure he's not number one on the list so even better would be someone dropping to us we like more.

So many unknowns for us fans aren't there?! That's why we should treat it all as a bit of fun and just get excited about the likelihood that we will bring another one or two players into the club who will play in a Premiership. :D I won't be getting stressed out about this draft that's for sure.

I think who we target in this draft will show who we target next year as a FA or Trade target, would we draft say B. Cox if we were say looking at jack lever from the crows ?

i see 2 weakness' in our list, a 3rd tall forward with great endurence Battle and a 2nd sting 195cm+ Forward who is flexible Marshall or Sproule

Interesting - Snoop has Venables sliding to our pick, Quigley doesn't rate him at all and ranks him in the 40s!

B-Mac got his way with Clay Smith though, loved him and Dal obliged

Really?
Everyone says he's clean at ground level but where else would he play? A few have said he reminds them of Westhoff
