Membership numbers can be so easily fudged they mean almost nothing..
I.e Richmond count 5 members no matter how many people sign up under the family membership model..
I'm sure a club will announce reaching 100k members in the next few years and the next week play against GWS at the G in front of 17 thousand people..

I know a few years back the official afl numbers only counted memberships that gave game access. IIRC Collingwood were claiming 100k while afl had them at 80k or something. Obviously they didn't mention pet memberships but they were arguing that international members and the like should still count
