And.... Carlton's single largest financial issue at present is it's deal with Etihad, something we are not alone in.
Our membership growth has not matched the teams we used to be on par with such as Essendon and Collingwood, but it is still nowhere near the bottom compared to Victorian clubs in general. Numbers lifted from the Bulldog's membership thread as I don't have time to chase them down myself this morning:
Which has led to situations such as:

Now Carlton don't fall into the small club bracket where we would be entitled to equalisation payments but we have lost touch with the top tier clubs and are still locked into a shit Etihad deal. We've slipped between the cracks and are suffering for it.
So has Carlton's marketing department been up to scratch over the past decade? I think nobody would argue that there isn't significant room for improvement.
Are they responsible for the financial hole we are in? I'm pretty sure not.
The club is pushing membership more aggressively now than I have ever seen, we are getting strong on field results... It was never going to be a overnight thing but I feel we are on the right road holistically. This should be a really positive time for the club

North received $2.8 million from the AFL in future fund payments in 2014, with the League having committed to compensate smaller clubs for structural inequities as part of the beefed-up equalisation measures it announced in June last year.
