Pick 36: ST KILDA - JAKE WATERMAN

POSITION: Medium forward HEIGHT: 191cm / WEIGHT: 82kg / DOB: 12/03/1998
Club: Claremont

A bit of a risky pick but there's plenty to like about this son of a gun. You'd probably all be pretty familiar with him by now but safe to say he's good overhead, capable of hitting contests hard and fairly mobile. There were some concerns about his application in the U18 allstars game but he looked to be spending most of his time as a stay at home forward, which isn't his preferred position - he's better suited playing up the ground.

FootyProphet profile

A really smart, strong forward with a fierce tackling mentality and an appetite to always be first to the ball, Jake Waterman is the second son of Dual West Coast Premiership player Chris, and younger brother to listed Eagle, Alec, however Jake certainly looks the pick of the two brothers. With the ability to get up the ground and use his powerful frame at the contest, Waterman starred up forward for WA in last year’s National Championships, kicking the most goals for the Sandgroppers. Waterman’s standout trait is his marking game – he hits the ball at full speed, marks strongly overhead, and also loves to reach for the ball out in front. Whilst not a key position player, he is an elite mark for his height and demands the ball with his smart leading patterns. Waterman still needs to work on his conversion as he can really spray his shots for goal at times. It will be interesting to see whether he can find another gear in his game and take a step towards playing through the midfield in his final junior year.

Saints bid on Jake Waterman. WCE_phil care to match?

God damnit, if you were a dinosaur i'd have to call you a homosaurus. Decisions, decisions. I know this will come back to bite me on the arse but we just shoved his brother out the door who i considered a significantly better player. West coast choose not to match.

GWS will take LUKE RYAN with their selection.

After overlooking Perryman and being foiled in their attempts to steal the sliders they desired (you bastards, I wanted Fisher) it makes sense for GWS to snare a replacement for Heath Shaw in the coming years.

The 20-year-old from Ascot Vale is shaping as one of the hottest mature-age prospects for this year’s AFL National Draft as he pieces together an impressive season with VFL outfit Coburg.

Coburg general manager Craig Lees thought the interest from AFL scouts was strong for former Lion Adam Saad before he got snapped up by Gold Coast Suns in the 2014 rookie draft.

The interest in Ryan has been on a different scale.

“It is that red-hot, it’s not funny,” Lees said.

“He’s really relished the environment and the education and it’s not if he gets drafted, it will be where he gets drafted. He’s the most natural footballer that I’ve ever seen.”

PICK 23: ST KILDA - JOSH ROTHAM

POSITION:
Medium half-back HEIGHT: 192cm / WEIGHT:79kg / DOB: 25/02/1998
Club: West Perth

A versatile defender who (from what I've seen) is good overhead, uses the ball well and can play tall or small, with the potential to play up the ground as well.

STRENGTHS (via AFL Draft Central profile):
  • Kicking
  • Athleticism
  • Rebounding
  • Versatility
The thing recruiters are most excited about with Rotham is his disposal by foot. While not a racking kick of the football, his disposal over short to medium distances is elite. He has great penetration and has a clean cut technique which is very smooth. His kicking over long distances despite not being as strong as his kicking over shorter distances is good. With more emphasis on kicking in the game nowadays players like Rotham are extremely valuable.

IMPROVEMENTS
  • Accumulation
  • Contested ball winning
Something that limits Joshua Rotham’s impact is his ability to find the football. In defense he doesn’t have great disposal numbers for WA and probably just snubbed him out of the u18 All Australian side. Even when Rotham plays higher up the field he doesn’t find a lot of the football only averaging 23 disposals at WAFL colts level when he plays on the wing. This can be improved with time and experience but for now he won’t be racking up big numbers.

Here's a photo of him jumping on someone's head to take a speccie. Video here: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-06-29/mark-of-the-year-young-wa-gun-takes-to-the-sky

Here's a belated profile of St Kilda's number 23 pick, West Perth's Josh Rotham

Out of curiosity why didn't you match? Is it you don't rate him that high or you have someone you want to pick

With their next selection, GWS take strong-marking medium forward MYLES POHOLKE.

With the loss of depth in Palmer and Johnson having one year left this is an area the Giants could use a bit more depth.

I've got three players listed in my next group I'm hoping to pick from, you've just taken 2 of them with your last selections.

Selection 41: Essendon - Darcy Cameron
Height: 204cm, Weight: 104 kg, DOB: 18/7/95
Club: Claremont Football Club/ WA

Darcy is a mature age player who has missed out on recent drafts with queries over his lack of body size and as a roll on effect from that his form has been inconsistent. Over promised and under delivered somewhat until season 2016 when he was a dominant player for Claremont in the ruck and in attack and named in the WAFL team of the year as a KPF.

Has the versatility, size and physical maturity now to make an impact in the AFL and I think the Bombers would be a good fit for him either as a ruck behind Leuenberger (let's not forget Bellchambers has missed a season) or playing as a forward/ ruck and foil for Daniher.

Deserves an opportunity now and in my opinion this is his best opportunity yet. Early Round 3 pick may be a stretch but someone needs to take the punt.

Adelaide pick - Will Hayward 186cm 75kg
Medium Forward

I really wanted to pick a Mid for Adelaide this pick

But Hayward is a too good opportunity to pass at pick 43

He has announced himself in the SANFL final series with a 22 disposal 9 goal game to get his team in the Grand final

And backed it up with a big game in the GF

It's part of the reason he has shot up the draft order has been likend to a Jack Gunston type

I see Hayward as one of the best Medium forwards in this draft and wouldn't be surprised if he goes in the top 20 in the real thing........

Eagle Rock1 your next. .
