I’d hate to use 10 on an outside player - even if he has a rapier like left foot. For as long as I can remember being on this site, we always fall in love with the player wth the cannon left foot, but, never select them. We need ball getters in the first round, not a ball user, that’s for 30 if we deem it a need. We can have a forward line of gold, but if the middle is lead, the back line better be steel, coz, it’s gunna rain if our midfield is below par. We need to develop that midfield, which will make our forwards job so much easier and busier. To be honest, I’d rather retain Boekhorst. If you want a good kick at 10 - Hunter Clark or Fogarty or Coffield.
He's already been shorn from the list Sheepy.

At the end of the day, after we make this selection, we’ll be in a good place. SOS will have selected two really top quality kids. He’ll then sit back for a while and tick them off as they fall and when 30 comes around, he’ll select a third quality kid. In SOS I trust.

I suppose the bigger question is how he’ll fill out the rest of the list?

Should we run a ‘nearest the pin’ for 3/10/30???

Naughton at pick 6 makes Marchbank look good value for what he cost us.

Marchbank is massive value for what we got him at. A huge win there.

FWIW, Naughton is #5 on my draft board. I really like his prospects in the AFL. It is a great year for KPD's this year if you need one. Future KPF's are gonna do it tough the next decade i reckon. Except if you are a machine like Charlie:).

Interesting observation Terry.

I must admit I'm in the Rayner/Fogarty camp if possible.

It seems to me that forward lines that are too tall (GWS 2017) get killed on the rebound.

One super tall (Harry) and multiple mobile mid and small forwards seem much more difficult to defend to me.

So Harry, SOSOS, Charlie, Rayner, Fogarty, LeBois, Pickett and Lamb would seem like a nightmare to defend.

Will be interesting to see what happens on draft day.

Goal kicking mids at 3 and 10. All the usual name can apply but you better come with some mongrel! I reckon we don't have too many excuses left. Have to be at least mid comp competitive next year to trust the rebuild. Harry needs a Charlie break out season. Pickett, Poulson, Fish and Cunners need to inject some speed. Everything has been said before, time to ante up.

Reckon SOS will pull out all stops to get #1 Pick in next year’s draft to get Rankine. If not, perhaps Hill might be there for us.

As good as Rankine looks, and he looks damn good, it's never wise to project who the best player may yet be, one year from now.
All the buzz is currently around Rankine, Lukocius, King and then there's Hill, Walsh and a couple more, but that will change. It always does.

If we get the most talented player at 3, I like the most talented player at 10.

Should always take best available with your top 30 - 50 picks. The clubs draft order list should determine who is the best available at that pick. If you think about it, that's all the players from the 2 best lot of teams coming through that year. We have an opportunity again to bring in 3 kids from the best possible '2 all 'Australian u18 teams' from 2017, maybe with a bit of luck all from the 1st team.

Then you can pick on list need!

Do you think Bolton would be happy should somehow SOS pull out Naughton at #3, Brander at #10 and Clavarino at #30?

Keep saying this but all too often, the 'Best Available' magically turns out to be just the type that a club is after...............weird, hey? :)

That is the very reason why teams flower up their picks. We could learn from GWS and yes I know they got a nice ride initially but they have drafted, traded and re-drafted the best ever. Hopefully we have learned and now have the list manager that understands the process. Time will tell but I think we know what to do now. Let's hope your wrong and I'm not.;)

Was Harrison Macredie a type we were after, or just best available?

Not the type they necessarily needed, but too talented to pass up at that pick.

There are no absolutes in recruiting. Everything is weighed up in order to make the best decision. Clearly though the type of player required is one of these considerations.

It took some convincing from SOS for us to put a 'bid' in for Macreadie. We bid on him and GWS let it slide.
I like Macreadie, but reckon Bolton may have sooner had a mid, but clearly SOS thought he Macreadie was too good to pass on and had plans that worked out well, further into the draft, given we had another three picks in a deep draft.
Anyone that says we'll simply pick best available, dependent on a players rating, is simply wrong and I don't know why they want keep being wrong.

How would Bolton feel should SOS firmly adhere to a ratings that nets only talls in Naughton, Brander and Clavarino? How dumb would that outcome be?

Yeah, it's a very loose term 'best available', when list structure needs to be factored in. Rigidly sticking to a rating list without considering the fit for the club would be the definition of poor list management imo.

Wasn't Macreadie rated as one of the best in the draft in the u17 year?
It'd be like Darcy Fogarty sliding to pick 30 because he had a down year this year. Eventually someone has to take them.

A lot of teams had to overlook the 'best available' in Macreadie for him to slide so far in the first place.
