Recruiting O'Brien is consistent with our drafting strategy. We rarely look for the sliders. We selected one player we think is very likely to be there at our Pick and do a heap of homework on them to make sure they're a good fit. It's why our selections are often picked out so far in advanced.
Yeah, a brain dead strategy that defies logic. It has only worked once (Cripps).

By the same token, we're not really ripping the ball out of the stoppage and feeding it the outside players without Cripps having a blinder.

Kennedy adds support, but we need spread from the stoppage to generate space for these outside types. O'Brien definitely has the running power to bring some of that, but I'm still a little shaky on his midfield prospects.

I'd prefer Bonar to bring similar speed while creating a mismatch or playing a role at at the stoppage. I'd also back him to withstand the bump when going in for a loose ball contest.

Agree with all of that.

I'm hoping for Bonar, or if he gets through, Fogarty, but it sounds like we're prioritising ball use and speed with Pick 10. This will leave Richards, O'Brien or Clark as the mostly likely candidates.

Some nice symmetry about taking Dow and then an outside gun at 10.

Ed Richards is now the suggestion from Twomey and Anderson at 10.

I rate Ed as potentially the best player in the draft. To do that he'll have to prove himself on the inside but if he can he's going to be something special.

Probably trying to force Coll to take him at 6 to leave coffield for us.

Coffield is basically already a Saint.

They love him, but he's outside the top 5.

The only team in the way is Collingwood and they are apparently committed to taking the weirdest top 10 pick possible.

Massive call - what are you thoughts on him?
Very much an outside player at this stage, but is decent one on one.

He's fast, very fast, and uses it the his advantage regularly. He's an excellent kick and can hit targets 50-60m out on the chest. He's also not a headless chook runner. He thinks about where he's running, and tries to dispose the ball to the best advantage of his teammate.

The risk with Ed is that he just hasn't played that high level footy at Champs or VFL level. You just don't know how he'll hold up under the extra pressure. It would've been nice to see him in the midfield to see if he can transition, but he just didn't play enough footy.

Have u seen much of LOB? How would you compare the 2 being outside runners with great disposal.

How do we know if Stephenson is worth the risk at 10 if we haven't got the medical report in front of us and don't actually know what the medical report means?
Clubs are apparently enquiring about liability risk if they draft him.

There are 9 clubs that have put a line through him. We are one of those clubs that won't be drafting Stephenson his condition is worst than first thought.
Such tragic news for a rare talent

If a player pretty much knows where he is going to end up and he's not in the top two or three picks or, conversely, at the bottom end of the draft then that's piss poor form, if you ask me. At best you are giving a youngster false assurance, or at worst you are trying to force-fit a player. No amount of 'homework' is going to make a player better than he actually is. You should always be looking for 'sliders'. The only other possibility is that recruiters already know exactly how the draft is going to pan out and that doesn't seem very practical to me. There have been far too many 'leaked' Carlton picks over the years for my comfort.

Isnt LOB more exposed in this role though, and has more runs on the board, and gets more disposals?

All you need to trust is that SOS would know who is better.

People are only getting worked up about Richards because he's a bolter they hadn't really heard of before whereas LOB has been mentioned as a highly rated prospect going back to last year.

That’s a big call. Looking at his stats from TAC Cup, only twice has he reached 20 disposals (21 and 22, so only just got there) and the majority of games he seems to just creep into the teens possession wise.

I have concerns about guys who can’t find the ball at lower levels. We seem to target these guys regularly and regularly get burned. Our recruiters project that they will somehow magically manage to start accumulating numbers at higher levels, but if that’s the case, why couldn’t they manage to do it at lower levels? “We see him moving into the midfield in time” was often spouted by Hughes, but how often has our club managed to turn these guys into high production midfielders?

We went through all the crap with Gibbs to get this valuable asset and I feel as though we are going to do a Hughes with it and waste it. Very underwhelming if SOS goes this way. I know the draft isn’t a good one, but it can’t be that bad that a guy who didn’t get picked by Vic Metro and has mild at best production gets picked up in the top ten. O’Brian I could understand, as he’s an outstanding kick, athlete, accumulates the ball a lot and was good enough to play good TAC Cup before his draft year.

Hopefully this is SOS leaking it out there to spook Collingwood into picking him.
