They've identified their window and are loading up with very strong contract offers?

No reason to be annoyed.

We'll do the same in a few years, except the quality of players brought in will be markedly elevated.

For now we continue loading up through the draft and Kennedy-type acquisitions.
there is no such thing as a window, the last 2 years have proved that

Saad is quicker, more skilled, cleaner and stronger in the contest than Buckley.
Buckley panics. Both run and have average disposal.
Really? Saad weaves his way through heavy traffic like everyone else is standing still and then disposes of it very well ( he has elite burst speed over 40 meters)- he would be a starting player at Carlton easy - especially since we are short a small rebounding defender. Lots of pressure on Byrne this year with Docherty set to play more midfield time.
I think both players are quick and essentially reliant upon others for their possessions. La Dispute he is cleaner with the ball around the ground, but Buckley is a better shot for goal. As for being stronger in the contest, only around 25% of his disposals are contested which is virtually identical to Buckley. For free-wheeling rebounding small defenders, neither get anywhere near enough of the ball for the role they play.

Carlton is no longer a destination club like it once was...not sure why?!

Surely in 2 years time carlton will be throwing everything at Kelly, and be working on it from now!

We need 2 superstar mids within the next 2-4 years with Murph and Gibbs edging closer to retirement. By that time of course, all of our list will have matured however, still need to be luring big players at our club.

Rockliff I thought was home and hosed! Likewise with Devon Smith.

I still think 2018 will bring carlton 7-9 wins ( it should) with organic progression, however, if we want to be challenging the 8, we have missed out big time so far in this years trade period.

It's not about getting contested possessions, it's about being able to body your opponent away to get to the ball first. Buckley gets brushed past with ease due to his skinny frame.

Like-for-like they play the same position, but Saad's a far better player.

I didn't say Buckley is better than Saad. What I have said is that I see a lot of Buckley in Saad and both underperform.

Huge standards if you reckon Saad's under performed to date. He's still only in his 3rd year and been hampered by injury, but doesn't need much of it to have an impact.

He would have been perfect for this team.

I can guarantee you that it's not all one-way traffic when a player 'chooses' not to come to us.
When a player 'nominates' a club, it comes about for a variety of reasons; geographical, monetary, the coach, the playing group, finals ability etc.

I don't want every player to come to us. Just the ones that we really want to come to us and that won't be everyone.
You'd be pretty silly to nominate a club for them not to want you. :)

really ?

No possible reasons coming to you?
Yeah not really?

I mean, in the last 17 years, we've been in much worse situations as a club on field and off field, however we were still able to bring in Nick Stevens, Chris Judd.....

Our future looks bright, yes, maybe 2/3 years away from contending, however, future is bright.

I understand Rockliff's situation, but what about Smith and Saad?

You do know he's only a year younger than Buckley and Smith don't you???

Granted, I understand that.

We've come out publically stating we will be agressive in landing some midfield depth... ummmmm????

The trade period hasn't started yet, Agent.
Looks discuss the outcome at the end of the trade period.
Im aware of the official commencement date, however, players nominating clubs etc etc... Trade period has already commenced.
No team waits for bell to ring lol

I'm sure we have done our due diligence in speaking to a range of players to address our needs, Agent. Kennedy nominating us is a great start and has kicked off addressing that midfield depth you've mentioned. Rockliff would have been handy but not worth smashing our cap for. As for Smith, despite his ceiling, the guy is worried about being at a club who manages injuries better. Sorta sends some alarm bells ringing even though he could have been someone who would have improved our entry inside 50 as a half-forward.

I feel we won't be sitting here with just Kennedy's inclusion come two Thursday's time. So much to unfold and develop in that time.

Hope so

Not understanding all the poor me posters saying we can't attract any players.

Last year we got Marchbank who looks like could be an AA CHB plus Pickett for chump change. This year we are crying out for an inside midfielder and the best available nominates us.

Sure we miss out on Rockliff but that's how the game works now the free agents go to clubs who are in contention because they don't have many years left. This is a good thing because the clubs who are not contending can cash in an asset like Brisbane are doing.

Smith would have been a good get but he is no Josh Kelly and if he nominated us we would have been forced to trade Gibbs to pay for him and Kennedy. With no need to trade Gibbs Adelaide will have to stump up something decent if they want him.

Saad I viewed as a bit of luxury which we would have struggled to pay for. I know many on here wanted Saad so Docherty could move into the middle and but I think he is way more valuable where he is. I think of Luke Hodge when I watch Doc play and like Hodge I don't think he would have quite as much influence in the middle as he does down back.

Keep pick 3, future second for Kennedy & trade Gibbs if the Crows feel generous. All us good we are moving in the right direction no need to panic.

Richmond have a core of 3-4 elite players in their prime, one of which is the best in the competition.

Bulldogs was complete luck and won't happen again.

We're still significantly behind.
It will happen again oneday, just a matter of if you are alive to see it. Every Premiership team gets luck in some form

Well said Vamos. Kids on forums panicking they are not getting everything.

We have been attracting decent players like Marchbank, Plowman and Pickett. Slowly building a list of 'good even quality'. Not salary guzzlers like D Smith and Rocky. Not damaged players like Stringer. Not selling the farm for Kelly.

SoS knows what he is doing. Incremental improvement given the young age profile.

A big inside mid body was our biggest need. Support and insurance for Crippa. SoS made sure that deal stood up and Kennedy nominated us. Bam Bam is just what is required to support smaller bodies like SPS/Fisher and Murph.

Carlton will have a strong even list that ends up a little untaggable because of the even strength of the 22.

We can hope SoS can unearth one more midfielder but it might have a wait another year. A small fast defender (like a Saad) would be nice too.

Our core is there and we a building that flag list incrementally and for mine, nicely.

You know, it's possible that both Smith and Saad would've chose us, if only we'd said yes... rumours suggest we said no to Smith on injury grounds... and maybe we didn't think Saad was a good fit for whatever reason...

There are serious assumptions being thrown around this thread.

Carlton isn't a destination club because we can no longer pay guys twice the offer of the next contender.

Welcome to the twenty-first century people.

If we want to win premierships we have to do it by being clever about our money, our picks and our players.

Can't buy the best talent from the SANFL and WAFL like yesteryear
