AFL Club
Collingwood
I can't remember a season with so many games played by debutants from that season. It is not too much to say that our ability to perform this season has been down to these guys, and their ability to step up and play AFL level football when more senior players have gone down.

Stephenson 22 games
Murray 13
Mihocek 12
Appleby 9
Sier 8
Madgen 4
Murphy 2

I think Murphy, Stephenson and Sier all have 200+ game player written all over them, but Mihocek, Appleby and Madgen could all be good role players into the future too. I think whatever comes this year, that is one big positive to take out.

Stephenson could be anything with a good run at it and Sier is an ominous warning for opposition midfields - has the potential to be gamebreaking week in week out.

Another preseason into them both and the prospect is truly mouth watering.

I think one of the upsides to having so many injuries to our best 22 is that, in the future playing senior footy will not be daunting, to any of these guys if called on play should we again suffer a few injuries

Exactly.

I think our improvement this year is partly due to the heavy injury toll over the last 3 seasons. It forced the club to get games into the fringe/younger players and now we have depth that we otherwise may not have had.

Agree.
Also the injuries have pushed out some of them who probably are better replaced longer term. Think Reid, Goldsack.

Think Checkers has the ability to be a bit more than a role player if this year isn’t one out of the box.

23 goals in 12 games could extrapolate to 45+ goals in 23 games if he gets a full year in. Could be as effective as say an Alistair Lynch come finals time (who wasn’t a star but was more than a role player).

Allistair Lynch wasn't a star? hmmm.....some porkies take longer to digest than others....
You don't play that many games and be revered by Matthews, Voss and co if you're not a star mate!
300+ games (600+ goals) not bad seeing he played the first half of his career as a full back!

Yes the debutants have been good but I’d like to see key position defenders in there somewhere. Madgen is not AFL standard but is playing because of injuries. Broady is now a good forward, I’d like to have seen McLarty given a chance down back. The club have stuffed him around moving him back, forward and ruck.

I agree 100%.

The bold text I've quoted is too "Mcavaney"!!!

No they haven't. They've used a guy who can and has played back/fwd before in his juniors become a utility type so that if the time comes where we need a forward second ruck he's right.. same thing as a defender.

Mihocek literally locked us into the double chance so I think you may be understating his importance.

Appleby, Sier, Madgen and Murphy could all be AA.
None have played enough games to even be considered regular best 22 yet.

The real standout amongst the debutantes is clearly Stephenson.

He has the potential to be one of the best to ever pull on a Pies jumper.

He could be this generations James Hird.

Checkers is a revelation and a shining example of how poor development or talent identification can stifle a career.

Sier played an important role early in that last quarter, no real possessions but pushing through packs and forcing the ball our way through sheer power. What an animal

The important thing about Stevo is that with another preseason he will be able to start spending significant time onball.

The debutants this year have performed, under extreme duress in some cases, the best that I can recall - in decades?

Sier forced himself on the game in the last quarter against Freo. It was a tremendous performance for a kid of limited experience. Hasn't he taken his chances and then some?

Stephenson is on another level. The Rising Star Award is televised on Foxtel this week - does anyone know what night?

The debutants have both helped restore Hine's reputation, and made up for what is increasingly looking like a wrong move (for a range of reasons) in recruiting Murray.

A guy I know that’s a Brisbane tragic I asked the same question and he said he didn’t believe Lynch was a star either and he’s the most one eyed Brisbane supporter I’ve ever met.

I remember that era very well and Lynch was a good player gifted with silver service from the midfield. You don’t have to agree.

Friday night

I think Appleby could well be best 22 and a 200 game player.
He'll be the next defender from the rookie draft like Tooves and Maxwell before him.

Going a bit early on the Murphy/Madgen hype (not that I think they can't reach those heights, just haven't seen enough evidence in the seniors to be making those claims yet). Stephenson easily the best first year pies player I've seen. He was drafted with the mind to play in the midfield - and that's still the case when you listen to club reps talk about him - but if he can push himself to be more consistent he could probably become a 60-goal a year forward... Will we ever even see him become a full-time mid if that's to eventuate?

I think a forward that can play mid without hurting the clearances etc., is a great thing - too easy to set a stopper on a gun forward but not if they have to run through the midfield with them.

So much potential in the forward line. I can’t see the need to move him.
