*note: Academy bidding is not included in this draft under the rules devised by those running the competition as a way to get a feel for where each player would fit into the pool if it was an uncompromised draft. Real draft at year's end will include bidding.

My picks as the Collingwood selector:
34 Collingwood - Connor Budarick (Gold Coast Academy)
Best position:
Inside midfield/general forward
Height, weight: 175cm, 72kg
Recruited from: Gold Coast
Projected draft range: 10-40
Plays like: Devon Smith
June Rankings: 11
Rationale: Tackled well and provided heavy forward pressure during the Under-18 Championships but was not as influential as a ball winner or offensively as expected which sees him drop
Strengths: Tackling, forward pressure, makes winning plays that don't show up on stat sheet, evasion, agility, clean skills, acceleration, football smarts, aerial marking threat
Weaknesses: Scoreboard impact, good but not great production as a midfielder
Rationale: With Collingwood's small and medium forward stocks primarily consisting of marking forwards, I wanted a more ground level forward who brings heavy forward pressure and Budarick is the premier tackler and forward pressure specialist in this draft pool. A season one ready player who as early as his first season to win a best 22 position.
Position on my draft board: 18

52 Collingwood - Dyson Hilder
Best position:
Key defence
Height, weight: 196cm, 91kg
Recruited from: North Adelaide
Projected draft range: 20-60
Plays like: Scott Thompson
June Rankings: not ranked
Rationale: Key defender who was one of South Australia's best during the Under-18 Championships and looks like a key defender with the attributes and performances on the board to suggest he has a high probability to develop at AFL level
Strengths: Intercept marking, one-on-one marking, one-on-one strength, reading of the drop of the ball, early reader of the ball in flight, kicking, vision
Weaknesses: Athleticism, versatility
Rationale: Collingwood need a young developing key defender and Hilder is both the best available key defender and for mine the best available remaining talent. For mine a highly developable key defender with the tools to develop over 3-4 years into a genuine AFL quality key defender.
Position on my draft board: 15

*While I rated Hilder more highly than Budarick and consider a key defender a higher priority, I had the sense Hilder would be available as one of this year's more underrated prospects and my bet paid off big time. Hilder is the second best key defender in this draft following McAsey and would be a great choice for Collingwood in the second or third round.

60 Collingwood - Karl Finlay
Height/weight: 192cm/88kg
Rationale: Best available selection and someone either as a key defender or general defender I feel can become a best 22 player. One of the elite readers of the ball in flight and intercept marks in the draft, very strong overhead and a good one-on-one defender. A good kick who displays good vision. Moves well. Can play key defence and may well end up a key defender but I'd be just as comfortable using him as a third tall or general defender to free him up to take more intercept marks and rebound more. A happy coincidence I've found two North Adelaide defenders of high quality.
Position on my draft board: 26

*A third successive guy I wouldn't bet on being available in the actual AFL draft at this pick and another I like the chances of developing at AFL level. I'm capitalising on value with for mine a clear best available in my mind, but at the same time coincidentally finding players I happen to like as list fits. In Collingwood's structure four years from now could pair with Hilder and Moore in defence and play as the third tall.

Upcoming pick
70 - Collingwood - Hewago Paul-Oea
(Gold Coast Academy)
Height/weight: 174cm/65kg

I weighted up between two Gold Coast Academy boys. A happy accident to be pairing Oea with Budarick from Gold Coast's Academy as two forward/mids and pairing two tall North Adelaide defenders. But never a bad thing pairing two from the same junior club together. If I had a third pick I'd be taking a third Gold Coast Academy prospect in Josh Gore who is a fantastic goalkicking forward and for mine in the same conversation as Cameron Taheny but ultimately rating Gore fairly evenly with Oea, I picked Oea with Collingwood needing speed and forward pressure as the top priority and that's what Oea brings in spades.

In picking Oea, I'm seeing him as another Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti. He has a similar game. Brings the forward pressure and second and third efforts in a big way. Really hard over the ball and an excellent ground ball winner. Clean hands in close and nice skills/vision/decision which is impressive given he hasn't played much footy. Give him a chance he'll hit the scoreboard. I overall love the way he influences games whenever the ball is in his area, whether it's pressuring or winning it.

Position on draft board: 30

Other than Gore I'm also a fan of Brodie Newman (KPD/3rd tall def - didn't need another) and Liam Delahunty (KPF who also looked good as a KPD during the Champs) as those remaining players I would have felt comfortable selecting late draft.

--

Feel free to hit me up with draft questions here whether relating to the bigfooty trial phantom or just general draft questions.

*Quick general note about this draft. It's deep for key defenders outside the first round and this is the draft with the most x-factor I've seen so getting small forwards and speed should not be a problem this year with good talent ID.

Love this stuff.

One thing about the draft each year.

Always brings this hope and promise.

They’re all fresh and happy and ready to go.

Knightmare well done on your punt and still getting Dyson Hilder.

If he was 15 on your draft board and the club sees him as worthy, I’d not risk such a prospect in a ND.

A nice key position player would be nice.

Separately be interesting to see where you think Will Kelly is at?
As I recall he wasn’t your highest selection.
I do wonder how he’ll develop with a big pre season.

I'm a huge Hilder fan. My view is after McAsey (possible first rounder and Vic Metro MVP) that Hilder is the next best key defender in this draft.

I would have been fine in the real thing taking Hilder with that first pick and would have taken him there if I didn't think he was going to be available in the third round.

On Kelly I'm not liking how he is being utilised in his VFL games so far. He's not a good key forward. I saw it last year, and he didn't look draftable when used forward. If he is a chance to develop it's as a key defender, and I only even as a key defender see him as a chance to develop, and it's a role he showed development progressively last year. I'd personally be investing in at least one key defender in this draft as a minimum if not a second given the depth of quality key defence options and the value several of them are representing this year. Brodie Newman (slightly undersized but an excellent intercept mark and good 1v1), Liam Delahunty (GWS Academy - has played more key forward but also looked good as a key defender during the champs), Biggy Nyuon (St.K Academy - underrated and reminds me of Aliir Aliir), Charlie Dean (probably better as a KPF) or Corey Watts (Sandringham B+F as an underager last year though hasn't taken the next step which puts him behind others) are players I'd consider depending on how they close out the season. Sam De Koning who was picked before my first selection I'd also be open to considering and also like as a key defender and is that third key defender on my board at the moment.

Key forward I'm in no rush to address. If a Charlie Dean drops or Delahunty isn't wanted by GWS I'd consider. But that's what this draft doesn't have much of.

Seems like a pretty good draft this year from what I have seen. One we should trade to get back into the first or second round in your opinion? A lot of small to mediums around with good place.

Or do we hope players like Hilder and McAsey fall to the 3rd and 4th round.

It's a bummer the club traded as aggressively as they did for Beams. This year's first round pick should never have been on the table as I said last offseason given his age and declining play.

That late first round pick could have = Maybe a Will Gould slides and could be there as a guy who can either play a Shannon Hurn role or play as a key defender if you want him to. Fischer McAsey (best KPD in the draft). Jack Mahony as a forward/mid would be good (I was one pick away from getting him in the trial phantom). If we don't like the options there, it's a pretty easy draft to move that first round pick down into several in the 20s and 30s and secure serious value.

It's a draft overall I strongly advocate having a high quantity of picks in. It's a deep draft, but importantly deep in the types Collingwood need. There is more skills/speed/tricky types in this draft than any I've seen. WA particularly has a lot of those types and needs to be watched closely. Then you've also go the key defenders I've spoken about already with some good ones to be available in the 20s/30s/40s.

Sounds like we should offload some talent to get a first round pick back? Love your analysis thanks Knightmare

Been reading your posts for years now Nightmare and I've always wished that Collingwood would offer you a job. Having extra eyes especially yours can help us find those talented players missed by other recruitment scouts in our organisation.

Collingwood are in win-now mode so the club probably should focus on retaining those better talents.

I'd be open to an extra second and third rounder though if the club can cash in on fringe types and get overs.

I prefer ESPN if given the choice. Unlike in clubland I get to choose how many and which games I attend and/or watch online and it also means I get to interact and speak openly and enjoy good conversation about prospects with a wider range of people than otherwise would be possible in clubland. It suits me well.

Maybe one day I'll join a club, but at this time I enjoy the balance my role gives me.

Always happy to talk to Collingwood's recruiters if ever they want to pick my mind though as with any other club.

I really hope Will Gould is not at our (now Brisbane’s) first pick. He looks the goods.

My prediction is Gould goes earlier rather than later, but he's a tricky one this far out to be guessing whether it's closer to 5 or 20 due to the sheer size of him at 98kg.

Gould for mine on quality is closer to 5 as a penetrating and damaging kick, but with a real aggressive edge to him where he'll intimidate you, bowl you over and is a real enforcer. And even at 98kg, he has a really nice explosive burst of speed over 20-30m with ball in hand. So he has the game to translate and become a big time presence and impact player at AFL level.

I heard a podcast with Derek Hine a few months ago and he hinted that Collingwood might get a first round pick this year.

With a big pre season Gould could easily drop 8 kilos, then look out

Weight can always be lost in the AFL system. I bring up his weight as something interesting because 1. he uses it and really throws his body around which is great to see any kid do but also 2. he's carrying that weight but despite that he's still remarkably explosive which is a great sign if/when he drops weight.

If it's including a trade of Brodie Grundy I want no part of that. I like Reilly O'Brien and feel he's a genuine number one, but Grundy is the difference between Collingwood finishing top 4 or missing the top 8.

If a notable player is moved, and that would have to happen unless the club plan to include future picks, you better get the value proposition right and not get swindled.

The only way we'd trade Grundy is if he said he wanted to go home and if that was the case and we are dealing with Adelaide I would expect the Carlton pick plus take your pick of any 2 other players on their list. At a minimum. 3 first rounders wouldn't cover it.

Giving up two first round picks for a 29 year old Beams and his baggage was foolish.

Cool.

Hmm out of the 4 deals, 1 was a positive and the other 3 turned sour. According to Meat Loaf 2 out of 3 ain't bad. so what would 1 out of 4 be?
I dunno it’s a pretty ****ing good ‘one’. Degoey and Crisp are more than adequate compensation for that trade

Aish has worked out pretty well imo...We haven’t been reemed by Brisbane.

Cameron Wood was traded for pick 14 who was looking promising at the time and never came on. Pick 14 ended up being traded by Brisbane to Melbourne for Travis Johnstone. Pretty null trade there.

MM they got one from us when they had the money to burn so meh.

Which 4 deals?

Cameron Wood that’s ancient. I’ve conveniently expunged that from the memory banks.

Long ago. But that Nathan Buckley went pretty well back in his playing days. Has become a handy coach these past couple of seasons. So there has been one other win other than the Beams trade which yielded greater reward than any could have imagined.

Thanks for the information, I didn't know all that.

Also my post was just tongue and cheek, I thought the Meat Loaf reference would be funny, I guess not.
