Can we assign someone to carry Harley everywhere so nothing happens to his calves.
I was thinking empire strikes back type scenario.
Another solution to our Harley problem is if anyone who is extremely quick could donate him some calves that would be great thank you.
My best idea yet make him stay in America. Crazy things happen over there, is it that much of a stretch that his calves magically heal.

Thinking of America lets start a conspiracy theory gold coast didn't trade us the real Harley, the one we have is a fake. I believe he's become a victim to a ravenous cane toad possibly a gang of them.
Why is no one reporting this you ask. Well because Damian Barrett said it was a brilliant story. Screaming all the other reporters quickly escaped the building and promptly fled to the evacuation points. Damian Barrett then lost interest in this and because it was legit. He then proceeded to make up a story about how a club is in disaster. Not to fear though bell will soon get to the bottom of this.
You been huffing glue nightman. No, no, yeah bro ))

Had to post this pic from the West .

The players all had a program to follow while they were on break.
No doubt. And yet some players decide to do at least some of this program at the club with their teammates, showing some semblance of comradery with their peers and leadership to younger players.

I get that this is their annual vacation. And if you have runs on the board -- like Mundy, Fyfe, Hamling, etc -- then sure maximise your break, because these leaders will be carrying a heavy load next year. But we have some mid-career players (Bennell and McCarthy) who don't seem to be as involved as others.

All I'm saying is that I would have more faith in guys like Bennell and McCarthy if they showed more involvement even when are not required to.

Who knows perhaps Bennell has been working hard with a personal trainer and having daily meditation sessions with a zen master. McCarthy could be shadowing a supermodel to see what she (doesn't) eat. Come 2019 both of these guys have career best years. But maybe not too.

Wouldn’t mind seeing fatty Sean Darcy lose a few kegs. It’s been two years and he’s still overweight. I mean cmon, it’s not that hard to drop 5-10kg.

Oh hang on, he’s a good bloke so probably gets spared the critisism.

Harley is one of the hardest trainers at the club. To maintain his body whilst being perma-injured has been a great effort. If he doesn’t get up to play games, I’m pointing my finger at our S&C team.

As for players returning early - stuff that. It’s already the longest preseason in world sport. There’s plenty of time between now and round one to make an impression on team mates and coaches. I’ld prefer the club kept it to only 1-4yr players to start with, let them feel a sense of ownership and driving their own standards. Integrate the senior boys when it’s time.

I will happily join in the chorus of ragging on players once they return if they aren’t in good nick (looking at Cam Mac here, again). But being disappointed, upset, or angry because they haven’t returned early is just fans impatience of wanting their new toys before Christmas.

Do you go into work on your annual leave to show your colleagues you're part of the team and build comradery with them? I get what you're saying but holiday time is holiday time. If Bennell or McCarthy fail, it wont be because they took their annual leave and didn't go back to work early.

I know the point you are trying to make but Sean is looking trimmed down this pre-season...

Similar to last year before his injury. I like Sean, but using him as an example, if he was “dog hungry” to “accelerate his development”, he could easily have dropped a few kgs extra by now.

But he’s just a 20yo ruckman trying to find his way in the AFL.

Almost every player could do more if they were really motivated too. I’m not sure there’s really anything more Harley could be doing to get his calves right. He’s probably done too much and invested too much, hence his off-field incidents when he re-injured himself. Must be frustrating as hell for him - what we feel as fans would pale in significance. He’s done everything our S&C could come up with. Harley’s manager even questioned whether our S&C really knew how to manage it correctly. So when people say he needs to be doing more or showing more, it baffles me.

for reference to when we drafted him:

M_rash

He’s come a long way. But still has a long way to go.

When we traded for Harley, his calves were dodgy but he still managed to get 15 games a year at Gold Coast. Either that totally screwed them by over doing it, or our S&C team haven’t worked out how to manage it yet, or Harley is a lazy bugger when needs to pull a finger out.

I’ld say it’s one of the first two options, but many believe it’s the third.

ruckman don't need to be super lean, you need a bit of weight behind you to crash the contest. Mumford was carrying an extra 5-10kgs and he was lethal at the contest.

yes but if you are a brick layer and in your holiday you do extreme sport and damage your back, its your problem.

They have an obligation to stay in decent nick.

People old enough to remember, Chops Hasleby used to always come back from the pre-season break 5kgs heavier. He'd work it off during the pre-season but there was a reason why he played 200 games and Pav played 350. At his peak Hase was an elite midfielder he just never did enough prep.

They definitely should maintain there fitness and weight over the break but i think some peoples expectations are a bit high in thinking there should be some sort of miraculous body transformation over a players 6 week holiday. It's probably as a result of increased media coverage.A few years back we wouldn't see players between end of season and getting toward the end of preseason and be able to see noticeable differences. Now we get a photo gallery of training 3 times a week.

Caught the tail end of training today and from what I noticed, Logue and Langdon impressed me the most. I didn't notice Cerra on the track but Brayshaw has already filled out nicely. Sean Darcy looks fitter as does Scott Jones, whilst Ethan Hughes looks in even better physical shape than normal. Also thought I saw Hammer out there. Small sample guys so I can't give much more detail.

Sharp session today with emphasis on long accurate kicks. Blackely everywhere, Duman, Logue looking great. Cerra one on work with a trainer then running laps.Apeness running laps. Darcy,Meek and Jones all looking trim and fit. Hamling put in a full session, . He isnt due back until next week, Hogan doing sand box walking. Ross out in the middle which if I remember didnt happen until after the xmas break last pre. Different feel to training for me, first time down there and a lot more kicking as opposed to the handball drills of last pre.

That's a good point Salim, i didn't pick up on it but you're right.

On Monday it was straight into kicking drills. Last season we would have spent quite a portion of the day doing handball in congestion drills.

To be fair, Hase did a knee and lost a season, plus he was basically let go because at the time his lack of pace meant he was thought to be past it. Pav was asked to stay past his due date because we had no real replacement. Plus no many WA based players play much more than 200 games. So a bit unfair on Hase. Pav was just a freak and no other WA based player really can be compared to him.

Our preseason drills seem to bear a high correlation to the game style of the previous season’s premiers. 2016 - lots of short ,flat kicking. 2017 - flurries of handball in congestion. 2018 - no idea , maybe buying winning lotto tickets. 2019 - lots of long kicking to advantage, apparently.

Might have something to do with us now having a tall marking forward half:rolleyes:

Ape and Cerra running laps today. I'm impressed with the way Cerra's physique has developed in 12 months and I recon he's a bit taller too.
Hamling did the full session with the boys and was a standout in most drills.
Ross seems more engaged in the drills than I remember him doing this time last year and gave Luke Ryan a bit of a bake at one stage.
Hogan made a brief appearance outside doing walk throughs in the sand pit for 15-20 minutes then went back inside.

As opposed to bombing it to Ballantyne, Salim.
Did Cerra have out of season surgery or merely go to an outdoor pop concert during the break?

Pavlich staying on was fine, the problem was the role we were needing him to play. Triple teamed, lone tall forward just a bit beyond him at that stage.
