Yes, skillfull, a good finisher, looks to move the ball on quick, good decisions, quick enough by foot. A free agent who costs us nothing but a pretty average pay grade to a guy who is only 26.

I have been asking about Riley Thilthorpe to Knightmare recently and found a mutual adrimiration for Josh Jenkins and the rich vein of form he found in his prime, this is something I hope Atkins can find, cause his best is very good, but he needs to trust in his defence to find him out in space so he can set us up going fwd.
Is this Atkins any good?

Drawing stark comparisons to when Ellis was signed in here, 4 years is probably too much but he brings more experience and knows how to play really well in a winning side

P.s. please let us be a winning side :(

Naming Tom Hawkins as a non-athlete is a bit of a fluff
The comment wasn’t about being a ‘non-athlete’, it was about speed, and being able to chase and tackle. He’s a pure strength forward, who is built like a brick shithouse but he’s not a quick player.

What he has that sets him above other guys like, Dixon, Lynch who have similar levels of strength is a brilliant football IQ. Constantly leads the competition in goal assists due to superb kicking, reading the play and team efforts.

Not at all knocking Hawkins, he’s possibly my favourite key forward in the competition. Or any of the guys I listed actually. Simply stating that he was wrong when he said not many guys that don’t ‘run and chase’ make it over ‘athlete’ players.

Speed might have been used but I think it was more about
Athlete, non footballer
Vs
Footballer, non athlete

Don’t think speed is the only consideration there

Jarrod's help with ACE development.

When the pandemic first hit Australia and shut down the AFL season in March, Oea was paired with veteran defender Jarrod Harbrow for weeks of one-on-one training.
“We got given dumbbells and plates and had to try and keep our strength up and do lots of running and footy skills,” Oea said.
“Jarrod is a tough guy.
“When I went back training with the boys, I felt like I was fit and ready to roll because Jarrod helped me a lot during the COVID break.”

It’s understood the 18-year-old was told in his exit meeting with the Suns he would be offered a two-year, Category A or B rookie contract.
It’s believed the deal will be finalised in the coming days.

Hey guys dont really comment much but have some thoughts. I think we are in desperate need of some class through the midfield with some pace which we dont have apart from weller.

Greenwood: Great inside mid but slow and kicking isnt great
Miller: Similar to greenwood, but better kicking and also doesnt break games open
Rowell & Anderson: Both will be guns
Swallow: May need to spend more time forward, kicking is terrible & would have Touk and greenwood in front of him
Weller: Great speed and kicking but still doesnt get enough of it

So I think we would one more mid that can break lines and take the game on to take the team to the next level & Ellis/Atkins arent the ones to do this either from the wings.

Midfield was good this year, but were too slow and skills are poor. This was highly evident in games like the last game against the hawks.

I don't think slow is the problem , i saw it so many times midfield players that is fast and spraying kick into forward 50 and opposition rebound back . I rather slow and play possession footy than fast and kicking like a headless chook .

Yeah it’s pretty clear we need a dynamic midfielder in the mix.

someone like a Shai Bolton, Tim Kelly, Zac Bailey, jade Gresham.

those guys don’t grow on trees though..

We don't have the kicking skills to play this slow possession footy, and the ball has been rebounding back due to poor kicking/skills. Hence the need for a skilful player as our mids aren't great kicking eg. swallow & greenwood

Dgb had outstanding athletic testing at WA combine.

Sprint and agility in top 5 or so tested.

People underestimate what we already have in the club. Yes, some players still need to develop but we collected potentially a great midfield.

So what round 1 2021 could look like?

My guess:

Witts, Miller, Rowell
Atkins, Greenwood, B Ellis

Rotation: Anderson, Bowes, Swallow, Weller, Rankine

What’s not to like? We already got hands on the ball contrary to 2019. We finished top 4 for clearances differential. We need to improve spread and be cleaner with the ball, limit turnovers under pressure, make better decisions under pressure, defend better, able to adjust, change tempo. It will come with more experience, stronger bodies, playing together.

Some thoughts on players.

Witts - still getting better, hoping for a full pre-season
Greenwood - just look at his stats on SUNS website. Unbelievable. And that was his first season inside after first full pre-season. He did tired a bit late in the season.
Miller - unbelievable season in my eyes, gets better every year, improved his kicking efficiency.
Swallow - still provide hardness there, far from finished. Yes, his disposal was not great, will probably spend more time forward.
Anderson - I can’t believe he was getting better as season progressed especially after moving inside. Another pre-season and I can’t see anyone to dislodge him. He still may tire in the end of season.
Rowell - similar to Anderson. What he showed in 5 games was unbelievable. Both him and Anderson are smart and provide drive.
Weller - was very good in midfield with his speed and break away, good kick.
Rankine - after 3 pre-seasons I believe he should play a lot in midfield, he is one second ahead of everyone reading the game, speed, break away, good kick I50.
Atkins - should help with spread on outside, if he is 80% of B Ellis I will be happy.
B Ellis - exactly what we needed, plays his role well.
Bowes - great evasion in traffic, smart, good kick, looks ready to go inside. I would not be surprised at all to see him there.

Then you got developing Flanders, Sharp - still probably 1-2 year from spending more time in midfield. Depth Fiorini, Brodie - if they stay. Ainsworth also can play there, Macpherson as well. We do have a lot of flexibility on our team. E.g. Powell and Luko can also play on the wing. Davies coming in, pick 5 could turn into another talented midfielder.

Yes, give me elite Merrett now and I will take it. But I doubt any major elite acquisition will happen this off-season. It’s fine, there will be a lot growth from within. Playing most games the same players will help us. Normal training (hopefully) too.

If we got Atkins, Broad and a quality midfielder I would be pretty stoked. Potentially we may need another key forward as well if we trade Wright, but that is long down the list of needs.
I was surprised a bit today SEN reporting only a lukewarm interest by SUNS in Broad considering what we already have in the club apparently. It could be just BS. On the other hand, if Jeffrey comes in I see him playing in defense initially. Who knows McLennan may also be ready.

That’s interesting.
We were killed by the degoeys, Gunston etc. even mason wood kicked a couple of goals against us.
That’s Nathan broads match up right there.

A

Id also would love to see Bowes in the midfield, showed a number of times throughout the year to get through traffic and elude tackles with some class. Plus very excited to see Rankine in the midfield in the future
