Been thinking of posting this for a while, but the frantic rush of games meant there wasn't a lot of thinking time for this, so I've held off.

Two questions for everyone....

1. What have you done correctly this AFL Fantasy season ?? What's worked, either trades, starting picks, strategy etc ? For a lot of us, it's absolutely ****ing nothing...... But feel free to post here anyway.

2. And what has gone horribly, horribly wrong for you....

For me:

1. I got some of my starting seletions right (I didn't trust my gut enough though....). My Bont to Neale trade early on was a great option. I've managed to identify a number of POD's that I've got into the side at or around the right time. I think my strategy to churn over rookies to build upgrades was the right one, as not enough rookies have had enough game time to truly mature.

2. My English - Pitt trade happened at the worst possible time..... Some of my 50/50 calls (or nearly all if I'm honest) have gone badly (Greenwood over Petracca a few weeks back, Serong over Bray last week, Cavarra over Vandermeer early on....). For form and other reasons, I've had to do more sideways trading than is ideal - so I've wasted more trades and more value than I'd wanted to...

I've only made one wrong move this year...signing up.

Seriously, basically buying players high and seeing them under perform and lose money.
e.g.
  • I went Gaff over Neale in round 4
  • Trading in Greenwood after 4 great rounds...it's been downhill since
  • Picking Sidebottom and Danger the week before they played MDB - note to self: beware of this next year.
  • Will Gould picked at the start of the yea - I was stuffed up with round 1 teams, it also meant I picked up Rowbottom
  • Traded Pitt to English :-(
Picks I've been happy with:
  • Witherden 3 weeks ago, Smith at the start of the year, Draper in his debeut

The rights - Starting with Viney, Petracca, Bailey Smith and Brayshaw
The wrongs - Trading out Houston, Brodie Smith. Trading in Michael Hibberd, Eggman, Doedee. Not starting with Neale.

Someone in one of my drafts took Neale at Pick 2 - we all went WTF ???? What a move it was in hindsight...

Wrong.. starting with Tom Lynch and Parish, Trading Houston too early, swapping Steele to Brad Crouch in the last few days before start, as my POD midfielder, trading Will Day instead of McPherson 2 weeks ago.

Right.. starting Trac, Braysh, Bailey Smith and to a lesser extent Luko, trading in Gawn instead of Grundy at about round 4-5, going Bont instead of Danger a month ago, not starting with Whitfield

Barring a few rounds, my strategy of getting rookies off the field as quickly as possible even if it means trading to under-priced or mid-rangers hasnt overly worked, as those rookies 2 of every 3 rounds nearly matched their scores.

I love this idea TedDougChris !

First crack at Fantasy Classic this year, have sat inside the top 5,000 since get go, and now at 1,900, so have definitely done a lot right!

The Rights:
  • Starting with Petracca & Neale.
  • Upgrading to Gawndy in Round 3 when Naismith went down and picking up Pittonet for R3 cash gen.
  • Persisting with Marlion Pickett, has come clutch with some nice 70+'s and nice money gen.
  • Whitfield (800k) -> Simpkin (543k) in Round 3.
  • Trading Docherty (694k NOW 608k) -> Lloyd (773k NOW 811k) in Round 9.
The Wrongs:
  • Dropping Greenwood in Round 4 for his lousy 49, he went on to score 109, 103, 109, 96 consecutively.
  • Starting and persisting with Cripps until Round 9.
  • Gawn -> Macrae in the round just gone (12). Had Bontempelli penciled in leading up to the Melbourne game, and changed it in the last 20 minutes prior. Even told my mates about the gut feeling I had, hence they all got a juicy 145 and I didn't!
  • Not grabbing Serong earlier.

Finished last round in the top 250 which is the highest I've ever flown so I've done some reflecting and hope I can check up on this next yeat:

- Deliberately made my team a day out from the opener rather than very early. Meant my mind was an open book and I could choose on form rather than focusing on players I had already chosen before preseason and trying to convince myself why I selected them

- If you want a player and can afford them get them then and there. In the past have tried to play the Breakeven game only for injuries and selection to wreck havoc on plans even a week after

- Hold onto premos and get rid of rookies. Good players I've learnt will usually come good eventually

- Luck has played a big part. Been very fortunate with injuries so have been able to trade up most weeks.

- Keep $170k rookies to a minimum. If they flop they are difficult to get rid.

- One of the very few positives of being in Melbourne lockdown is having the time to watch more games and make the most of rolling lockout

- Freo have been very fantasy relevant this year, especially in terms of rookies, so been great to have a sense of job security and potential

- Negative I learnt in the first few rounds is trust form over name. Had the choice of Haynes, Ridley or Crisp. Crisp had the worst average but backed him in due to his year last year. Unfortunately his form has stuck true, as has Ridley and Haynes, so that cost me a fair few points and cash

Good thread!

Good things:
Steele and Oliver in the start
Gawn in at the right time and out at the right time
Ridley
Holding Brayshaw and Brodie for an extra week or 2
Not starting Whitfield

Bad things:
Missing the obvious role change players such as Adams and Bailey Smith
Starting risky moves like DMac and Jacobs instead
Roberton
Missing out on Anderson
English in
