Someone once told me these stories spread like a virus.

I am not a super-spreader.

LOL .....haven't bought a paper or paid on-line for 15 years .....not about to start now

The stories are spread like a virus .....so it's simply a matter of waiting for the next outlet .....probably FoxFooty

The AFL is close to securing an escape route for clubs stuck in Queensland in the hope it can pull off a Super Sunday that would save the round 20 fixture.
Essendon, Sydney and Greater Western Sydney were all hoping to fly from Queensland to Melbourne at 3pm on Saturday.

Queensland’s snap lockdown is due to begin at 4pm. It looks like all systems go for the Bombers and Giants, who safely boarded the same aircraft. The Swans will take a different flight to Melbourne.

The AFL has been in high-level talks on Saturday seeking approval for the clubs to return to Melbourne. It remains on track to pull off the impossible and complete all round 20 games this weekend despite the unexpected outbreak in Queensland.

Once those clubs make it into Melbourne, plans are advanced for the three postponed games to all take place on Sunday.

It is expected that Marvel Stadium would host a double-header and the MCG would host the Essendon-Sydney clash at 3.10pm.

Gold Coast-Melbourne would take place at around midday at Marvel before GWS-Port Adelaide kicked off at about 6pm.

That would deliver five Sunday games, with Hawthorn-Brisbane Lions (2.10pm in Launceston) and Fremantle-Richmond (5.10pm in Perth) already in the calendar.

The three games relocated from Queensland to Melbourne would all be closed to the public.

The knock-on effect would see the Round 21 fixture also adjusted.

West Coast’s clash against Melbourne – currently scheduled for Saturday night at Perth Stadium – would likely take place on Monday night.

The Demons must complete seven days in quarantine in Western Australia before that match.

They endured a chaotic day of travel on Saturday, flying into Queensland only to turn around to fly home without leaving the tarmac in Brisbane as news of the lockdown emerged.

It would make sense for the Western Bulldogs-Essendon clash in round 21 to be played on Saturday night instead of Eagles-Demons.

However on Saturday afternoon the priority was still squarely placed on securing approval for the clubs in Queensland to come to Melbourne.

All six clubs will be in Melbourne by Saturday evening.

That has ensured the league does not have to cash in the pre-finals bye early as an emergency lever to save the home-and-away season.

So I guess next week is stuffed. Melbourne playing tomorrow means they won’t be able to spend 7 days in WA quarantine to play on Sat night. Assume it’s going to be moved to at least next Sunday night but more likely Monday week.

Essendon v WB was meant to be on Friday night but that can’t happen as we’ve already had a 5 day break this season.

This is bloody ridiculous. The AFLPA needs to **** right off. The season is on a knife edge right now and they shouldn’t be standing in the way.

Assuming the AFL can't work a deal with the AFLPA (surely they can cite extenuating circumstances or something), then I think the only game that could work for Friday next week is Geelong vs GWS.

The aflpa were adamant our Sydney gave could not be played on the Friday. I can’t see them bending as it will set a precedent that undermines everything they are for. It’s ridiculous.

So the NRL can play in Queensland but not the AFL?

WCE vs Melb on Monday week, as expected

Those ACST & AWST times almost fooled me. Would it kill them to publish all 9 match times as AEST so there's some uniformity?

11pm finish on Monday night on the east coast. Clever.

So the NRL can play in Queensland but not the AFL?

I am fairly sure the AFL could have done the same but they decided to bring the teams to Melbourne.

Not sure about that. In hindsight perhaps. Not saying you are wrong, but pretty sure the NRL was only given the go ahead late on Saturday, on the proviso that all games were played at Suncorp Stadium. Pretty sure the AFL made the decision to leave QLD before any of those discussions could be entered into. I guess they could have played two games at the GABBA on the Sunday and another on the Monday, but because of the unknown moving forward, I think it was for the best to get them all back to Victoria. Had the potential to wreak havoc on the draw moving forward if they left those teams up there. With the NRL, the whole comp was already in the one state.

Agree 100%, AFL probably more worried about getting teams out of a soon to be Vic red zone than getting exemptions to play from Qld govt. NRL had no real other alternative.
