There was a time when the club was needing to choose between Baker and Castagna for a small forward position. This was known as the George Baker Selection issue….

But our christian name lineup would now do Woodstock justice. 😁

We got Dion….

Dylan….

You would have think the club recruiters had enough of trolling the music industry, but nope.

With Daniel Rioli and Steely Green now playing for us we go and ā€œdo it againā€ with Steely Dan.

😩😩😩

More fool me for not posting this yesterday. I would have looked like a draft guru (instead of just a big sexy bastard).

For context, we live in Freo.

My lovely wife has been banging on lately about some kid from South Freo that's been training with her personal trainer Josh at the gym she goes to. Josh says to her that this kid is a really good footballer for the Bulldogs and is hoping to be drafted. He's not a stand out in any way except for his extreme athletic traits.

I go, oh right darling, ask Josh what's his name. My wife says she's seen this kid doing amazing strength and agility stuff at the gym and that all the gym goers love watching him. The gym is Focus Fitness on Rockingham Road Hamilton Hill, the suburb next to South Fremantle.

Wifey says she can't remember his name but it's weird, something like Healy or Feely or something. Finally last night she comes home and I say this kid, is his name Steely ? She say yes that's it ! Steely Green.

I laugh and say I read that he's among the kids being considered by the Tiges. We both think it's a bit of a joke and say imagine that. However I take a bit of a look at his profile and think to myself, if Richmond weren't after these big talls like Tom Scully and Harry Lemmey and Phoenix Foster (I know this because I am a Big footy nuffie), this kid is actually the Liam Baker kind of competitor that Dimma absolutely loves !

So, comes R2 today and I'm keeping a loose eye on the draft after we get back from the beach (38 degrees here today so Coogee Beach gets a smashing) I casually look up Richmond's picks in the draft while I'm taking the cover off the spa (yep welcome to WA lifestyle - it never rains in California) and lo and behold Tigers draft a ripping half back from East Freo called Kaleb Smith (who can really go and is a beautiful kick) AND a little cattle dog by the name of Steely (Dan) Green !!

Yay ! It's always good fun to have a connection (even as loose as this) and My wife swears he's a great kid and she is NEVER WRONG so I am 100% certain we have stolen a winner.

Later tonight after the wife goes to bed exhausted (what can I say I am a big sexy bastard) I jump online and dig a bit deeper into Steely and find that he's originally from Brookton/Pingelly (a couple of hours from Perth where my great grandfather, unbeknownst to me when I move over here from Melbourne in my mid 20s was the State Member of Parliament Lower House for Pingelly around 1910-20). There's about 20 families out there since Federation so I am now claiming Steely as "our Steely" because he's almost certainly, probably, possibly family.

That will do me. Go Steely you good thing and best of luck young fella.

PS. Read tonight in The West that he's shitting bricks about turning up to training with Dustin Martin ! Lol. I would be too mate. Be yourself and give it your best shot.

Lots of love. Uncle YeOldTiger !

I call bulltish

Go for it. I've given the name of the personal trainer, the name of the gym. If you want to call my wife a liar I will meet you at ten paces and proceed to box your ears until you look like a front row forward. That's my story and I'm sticking to it (unless my wife got it wrong and it's actually a kid called Barry Greene with delusions of grandeur).

The bit about the big sexy bastard could be poetic licence although I am a large fellow.

That carlton big fella is still on the recruitment panel
Sumo Wrestling is the only fatter profession than AFL recruiters and talent scouts.
So Carlton just jumped the Saints to pick the player the Saints were never going to take. Never change guys never change
SOS still calling the shots

Great read mate, funny story is we have a connection to Kaleb Smith. I remember when my son was playing footy early days and his team (Jandakot Jets) used to play against Kalebs team (Melville Hawks) Kaleb back in the day used to play rover and up forward. He would kick my sons teams arse one game in particular he bagged 4 goals. I said do you know that boy and my son said yeah dad he goes to my school and we talk footy a bit. My son was mates with him at school before he went to Wesley in year 11 & 12.
Side note my son also had one of Maurice Riolis grandsons in his team, (Tryse)
Shame my boy is skinny as a rake, he is however 193cm tall so would never have got selected by Richmond anyway lol

This thread was awfully disappointing, there’s like only about 3 or 4 posters melting over not picking up some Hail Mary tall in the 50s.
Last year had some epic melts.

Only way to settle this is with pics

Never for us taking a punt on a tall with a 99.9% bust chance, but I did do my bit to pad out the melts over getting a midget

We have our key backs for the next 10 years in Balta and Gibcus, they’ll make a fine pairing. But yeah, hopefully the club has something up there sleeve re a key forward coming in, but also haven’t given up hope that Samson Ryan and Bauer could be long term options either

Drafting 18yo talls a mugs game too. You spend 4 years developing the campaigner to get CCJ’d. Better to pick a surplus tall off someone else’s list in their early to mid 20’s, like Nank and Lynch.
Ideally you never draft a KPP unless he's the AFL equivalent of Wembanyama. Let other clubs invest all the time/risk to develop them and (like you said) poach as needed when there's a surplus

Odds of drafting another Rance or Jack Riewoldt any time soon?

We were blessed with them developing how they did, something I don't take for granted

So are balta and Gibcus, Wembanyama level?

To just stop drafting bigs seems a bit extreme?

Only you'd take the Wembanyama example to the nth degree. It means we should only be taking a very small number and one's that have shown some brilliance already and have the lowest bust chance possible. Let other clubs be the ones investing the time and risk in 99% of them

Glad we didn't try this year as you're not getting that on any planet with pick 49 in a weak draft

Not sure about you all, but I love picking WA boys, something about them wear yellow and black colours too. Can't wait to see how these 2 kids develop.
These two lads fit perfectly with the young players under 21. Genuine x factor and footskills the lot of them. Bauer, Rioli, Ryan, Brown, Banks, Clarke, Sonse, Gibcus and now Green and Smith, is genuinely balanced mix covering every postion on the ground including key backs and forwards
