Pretty much every game and when Brown wasn't playing, Weideman did. Too tall is a fallacy, if the sum of all parts works

Especially with the rule changes last year - tall forwards back in vogue (and hence also, tall defences).

Finally got down to training.

Doc running laps brought a tear to the eye.

Then I realised he looks the best he has ever looked. Has packed on the muscle in the last month.

Would be an amazing story, and genuinely think he can get back to great footy. Just remember how good he was for a few games on ball before the knee.

Could be an outstanding winger for us given his elite ability to read the ball. The backline is chockers, so think he would be an excellent wing option. Not the greatest kick, I admit but reads the play and can run.

Zach W looks a lot fitter (but IMO nowhere near as lean as someone entering the prime of his career should be) and was basically worst on ground during the sim with multiple turnovers leading to shots.

Cripps looks great. Bigger than his slimmed down version but running well.

Tom Willo now has elite athleticism but still just fu**s up the footy side of it. Actually won a 200.

TDK not physically ready to be a force yet. Clearly has a bright future but 2+ years away from being dominant.

Charlie looks outstanding. They had one drill where it was clear that want to set up Charlie to get the ball anywhere within 70m no matter what. Slotted a 60m shot easily but then was awful being overly hungry on a few plays burning good leads for long shots.

Harry looks in good nick but going at 70% the whole day. They just need him to stay fit and he'll kick 60.

JSOS is the embodiment of effort. Not overly talented but jeez he tries. Still a best 22.

Saad clearly very limited physically and then hurt his shoulder. Need to get him right. Pivotal to our running game.

Markov on the way but really should just be doing squats and eating KFC all year.

Philp looked better than I've seen him. 2 goals on the end of good play.

Didn't notice Cerra.

Hewett is the perfect get. Low cost 20 disposal player. Hard as. Got fairly smashed in the running. Anyone expecting him to blow up is in for a shock though.

LOB is a hard one. Got burned so many times in good position by players trying (and failing) to go corridor at all costs. When he finally drifted more central was very good. We need to actively seek him out, not burn him.

JW solid as a rock.

Ditto SW.

GOV looks way thinner and fitter. I genuinely expect a huge season down back but he has been so horribly disappointing. Would love a little more lean mass on him for his expected role.

Overall was great to get down and see the boys.

Hoping to see a better year based on better game plan, Cripps being back to himself and Charlie fit. Not convinced we'll have a lot of others go to another level based on what I've seen but that should be good for a 12-14 win season.

Thanks for the report. Great news re. Doc and Philp in particular. 2 or 3 bonuses there with Carroll also going well.

The video that I watched from BA gave a pretty good idea but it was hard to tell who is who at times.

The worry is the kicking. It's only pre-season scratch match but I did find the level concerning to say the least. Kennedy, for example, either kicked long down the wing to the opposition, went short and turned it over or kicked out on the full in almost every disposal he had.

It's not just him. And not like there's a bit of rustiness to tidy up - it's genuine U12s level. It's bottom 4 stuff. It looks like Voss is getting us to kick back into the corridor more (like Port) we're in for some head-in-hands moments. We definitely do not have the skill level to pull that off. There's not one smooth passage of play from end to end. Scrappy as f***.

Again - only preseason but sheeeesh - we're coming from a long way back at this point.

Yeah, the skills by some senior players were deplorable to be honest. I kind of leant on that when talking about LOB. They kept burning him in decent position to absolutely butcher corridor kicks.

People might laugh at you for being negative but really the season isn't very far away. These were players who have been in the system 5+ years.

If we're going to play corridor, we need to get it into reliable kicks hands..of which there are few. In the backline that would only essentially be Weiters and now maybe Gov. Williams was horrific by foot and really he shouldn't ever be, particularly in a 70% scratch match with far more time. We know Saad brings run and carry, generally with a long chaos ball after it. Plow has a couple howlers in him a week. Docs kicking is very ordinary to say the least (and I suspect he'll move up to a wing).

They really need to play out through JW, Gov, Newman and LOB if they're going to look corridor.

Overall, I definitely saw enough to be excited that we will be better and I love the plan of playing through curnow at half forward but certainly some huge question marks around our skill level to carry out the apparent game plan.

Plowman’s kicking efficiency is boosted by his switch kicks across the backline - when he kicks down the line or inboard it’s been an entirely different story for years, can’t expect this to improve now.

Amazing that so many professional AFL players are so bad at kicking the ball, you would hope 2/3 year in the system they’d have it nailed. And if you go top 40 in a AFL draft you’d be pretty decent. Perhaps we need a bigger population of kids playing the sport to improve the quality

Plowmans howlers are often decision making. His disposal goes above 95% most weeks. He’s extremely reliable by foot IMO.

They have probably been through a tough session the previous few days so it’s expected the soreness will be catching up with them. Let’s see how they go when it’s just an 80 minute game.

It’s certainly not a dominating trait we look for in a draftee (or one that takes much credence) when selecting.
And HTF is there not a decent program in an AFL system to right every players kicking to an elite standard is staggering. Once you enter the building, kicking is drilled & re-coached into you as/if necessary.
White belt up to black material.

And hone their handpassing. Left & right. Move the target 🎯. In a tackle. Deliberately over the boundary but with intent to keep it in the field of play…

Good point. I really wonder what the future holds for Plow. His decision making is a real deflater for the team when he coughs up those easy turnovers. With Voss there is he going to continue to overlook this because he does do a few good things also?

Personally I doubt it but who knows.

If we're going to play corridor though guys like LOB, Carroll, SOS, Kemp, etc. who can really kick are going to need to be given preference - even though they may have shortcomings in other areas. Particularly in the backline. We'll miss Stocker early - he really sorted his kicking out late last year.
