Training 2022 Training Reports

With the game plan we put on show on Friday, I reckon Ryan will be encouraged to speed up his decision making. Clark and Young will be nipping around providing options and the stagnant ‘kick it down the line to a pack’ tactic will be used at a bare minimum.

Ross Lyon was trying to get us to move the ball quicker FFS. We’ve been trying to play that game plan for years. Wilson always moved it quickly but no one else was seemingly capable - Wilson is far from an elite kick too. Now we’ve invested heavily in HBFs - all of Young, Chapman and Clark were first round picks originally - we’ve actually got the tools to do it properly.

It isn’t Ryan’s strength. Simple as that. Doesn’t mean he isn’t a good player (he’s one of our best) or he can’t improve but we shouldn’t just pretend his weaknesses do not exist.

I was talking about it during the game how Wilson will always try and get the handball from the guy who marked outside 50 and go for goal himself instead

Yeah fair call. But I see those shots as freebies, and low percentage. But actually stopping, composing yourself while you know all eyes are on you... that takes confidence. And it's also the team thing. It irritates me no end when I see players take a mark in goal range, and then quickly play on for a rushed shot at goal. (Tabs does this a lot.) Because when they miss, the whole team gets denied a chance to catch their breath.

Get a feeling we may see a long range goal kicking half back this year. Clark seems to have 60 metre kicks in his arsenal.

The difference in that match was Clarks willingness to back himself in kicking for goal. The self confidence to stop and nail a set shot from outside the 50 was inspiring. Wilson rarely, if ever, does that. He would rather play his defensive running role and let the forwards take responsibility for set shots. So for mine, Clark is potentially the more complete player.

Having said that, I rate Wilson and his value his experience. But it is always good when a player that would previously just assume that they will get a game each week, has to actually compete for a spot. He will be better for it.
That goal was great to see. A real weapon. I quite like defenders who can run down the opposition speedsters.

I was thinking the same thing, Willo backs himself for the hand pass goal from outside 50....he just never scores a goal from them. On a side note our best team next year might have both Willo and Clark off half back it worked pretty well in the pre-season game, but who do you drop to get them both in???
Hoping "But who do you drop?" might get a bit of a workout for the next few seasons.

I see Tyler Keitel is now going to train with us for that vacant Valente spot possibly. He averages nearly 4 goals a game which is pretty damn good these days.

Hey Yeti just wondering how you think we're tracking to you prediction that we're shit?

You asked me to bookmark so I just thought revisit.

Go for it.

I am saying we are sh*t, not sure how that is a surprise? I highly doubt we will be making finals next year, I think we are at least 2-3 away as we continue to draft and develop smartly and the club doesn't panic and try some more stupid quick fixes.

Still early days but wondering your thoughts and if you're ready to jump off the the "We're shit" train yet?

Replies to the match day thread are closed, but I re-watched the game yesterday.

I thought Clark had a really good first game, but I can't say he was better than Wilson. Some powerful running and kicking from the pair.

Interested to know others thoughts because I get the feeling some posters on here have Wilson out the door. To me he showed what a lethal combination we can have driving us into attack.
Maybe that is what happens when glued on players have someone fully challenging for the same spot.
Wilson has been ordinary the last couple of years.
I know he has had injury, but now with Clark along side him, not just behind, but shoulder to shoulder with him, Willo is going to have to lift to stay the top dog.
The same applies to more than one I would say. Plenty to chose from. Perform or Peel calls.

hmmm, Luke isn’t a great kick and he tends to hoof the ball with a big loop…he’s also a bit slow…almost Hughes-like
LOL, Really. He is well set into the team. Mr Reliable. He led the defence the last couple of years when we fielded a midget back line.
He is as safe as churches.

You kidding right?

One pre season win and we're not shit? Until we do it in the regular season I am maintaining my POV.

I am in awe of you.

I do feel like in his first couple of years Ryan pulled off longer riskier kicks than he does nowadays. That might be a product of moving to the last line of defence and just naturally wanting to be more careful. Given the great ball users he has up the ground ahead of him now though he should just focus on getting it in their hands as soon as possible.

I'm in awe of someone so keen to denigrate their own team in a public space.

It was just a friendly checking in. I'm just giving you a chance to see the error of your ways. I'll be back in a few months and we'll go from there hey?

Denigrate? I would say my criticism of our club is quite fair considering our current position.

What do you think I said was unfair? Didn't we smash the Eagles in a 2018 practice match?

I would be very happy being wrong but to think that we are out of the woods yet is as premature. Would love to be wrong but I'm yet to see it.

Doubling down - love it.

But you’re going to be eating even more humble pie now.

Our mob is about to announce itself on the competition.

I assume there's no point tipping shares to you then. 'Everything's a failure until proven otherwise!'
