Slice-of-Pie-2023-AFLW-Draft-analysis.jpg

Hello and welcome back to another year of my 2023 AFLW Draft Analysis. Looking forward to getting back to the the junior pathway footy, even though it looks like it will be a little later next year. State Academies are starting to come out, so that means there are discussion points happening, so happy to discuss those and answer any questions.

What do I know?

In terms of knowledge, I've been watching the girls pathway programs since the foundation of the AFLW. I saw Chloe Molloy and Monique Conti run around for Calder Cannons to give a bit of an idea. Based in Victoria I obviously see a lot of Victorian football, but watch all the SANFL Women's games thanks to the Digital Pass, and all the WAFLW thanks to Streamer. When a QAFLW game has multiple draft prospects I also check that out. Naturally all the championships games (16s, 18s etc.) I watch, and I also check out the V/Line Cup to get a good feel of the talented up and comers for future years prior to NAB League. All up, I would probably watch around 150-200 games a year.

What will this thread be for?

Effectively I'll be able to chuck all the stuff in one thread (similar to what happens on the male draft boards), and will have Power Rankings, updates and profiles, as well as weekly thoughts. Naturally I'll answer any questions you have. Since I can't watch them at the moment, discussing them will have to do!

What will I do over the break?

I'll check out the V/Line Cup and the SA equivalent from the September break, I did catch a game and make notes, but will go back and watch the remainder to have a more overall picture. Which effectively means I'll want to get all those in before discussing proper 2025 onwards discussions. I do have a very firm knowledge on not only the 2023 draft crop, but the 2024 draft crop.

A few notes:

I've deliberately held back on a number of Vics purely because though I've seen more of them, a lot of the above (non-Vics) have played senior level or at championships level. That means more exposure. There's another seven Vics I had on the shortlist, with a few names across the country as well. Both WA and Queensland could force an extra name in there, but I also wanted to add who I saw as the top prospect from the NT and NSW-ACT. In saying that, if I didn't think they deserved it, they would not be in here.

I know this will change, probably substantially, in 12 months time. It's just good to get some names out there in advance.

South Australian Under 18 Girls Academy has been announced

  • Lauren Young, Laela Ebert return from ACL
  • Shae Archbold and Georgia McKee both did their ACLs recently :(
  • Next crop come through in the 07-born crop (2025 AFLW Draft)
  • Midfield of Scholz, Young, Goody, Window and Brooksby is insane, all are potential first round talents
  • Forward line taken a hit with Archbold, McKee gone, but Rasheed still the major one to watch for 2024 there
  • Will be good for the younger ones to get some exposure
  • Elaine Grigg has crossed from North to Central

The 2023 AFL Women's Academy has been announced. All top-age players, South Australia + Vic Metro (6 players), Vic Country + Queensland (4), Western Australia + NSW/ACT (3), Northern Territory + Tasmania (2).

Stitch up of the century surely. I hope she doesn't get screwed by the system and goes undrafted because she's small. Top 3 in the NAB League BnF as a 16 and 17-year-old!
It's clearly the only reason she's not in there and it's very frustrating. Perhaps they're thinking that a club won't draft her being a mid, so she has to play as a small forward this year perhaps, but either way, she's clearly among the best in the group on sheer talent, so it's a mind-boggling one. Especially when there's every chance a few here won't get drafted and are in just to balance the ledger across the states and Academies.

It doesn't look like there is much top end talent coming up in NSW, how are the Giants and Swans going to get better and get themselves up the ladder.

Adding Huntington and re-adding Beeson would probably make the Giants a little better (by a factor of, like, ten).

And as for the Swans, unlike earlier in the year, they have the time now to make a serious play for a true marquee player or two. Plus, as I said in the awards thread yesterday, they'd be crazy to not recruit some Irish players.

when is the aflw draft and is there also an aflw trade week as well.

if there is im thinking this is next week first 3 days of trade say monday tuesday wednesday trade and thursday and friday are the draft days

i feel this is done at melbourne convention centre.

February or March 2023 is the next one, and due to 2022 having 2 drafts, this next one will be a once-off overage one mainly comprising players who didn't picked up in the June 2022 draft - all players picked will be 19+ years old. Next 'proper' draft will be in February / March 2024.

I assume trade week will happen closer to the next season - probably April / May or so.

Would trade week not come before the overage draft? It seems hard to draft anyone when you aren't sure who is going to be traded out or not.

I suppose another key factor in all of this is the CBA, presumably, that would impact rules, decisions and dates. Maybe another pay rise (albeit a much smaller one) would close the gap for some girls to consider a trade interstate. Does anyone have any info on when negotiations for the next CBA would take place? Hopefully they don't sit on it for a while and then have to get something through too close to the season again!

I actually imagine it will come closer to the season but they can trade the actual 2023 draft picks in advance. Nothing would surprise me with the AFL and it could well be before the draft, but I can't imagine these picks will be worth any value because Pick 1 is roughly Pick 101 (factoring in the full draft and injury-replacement players) from the 2022 AFLW Draft.

So, who are some of the overage prospects for the first draft of 2023? This draft looks harder to predict than 2021.

It will likely look like the men's rookie draft. Most teams will go with what they know and there's likely to be bare minimum delistings (retirements the major forced changes).

Octavia Di Donato and Lana Schwerdt are two from my board I think deserve a look. Tegan Williams (as a KPF/KPD) option is a tall chance, but the majority would be mature-age ready-to-go players. Alana Lishmund, Gypsy Schirmer, Isabelle Starmer and Madison Lane a few that keep knocking on the door. Tarnica Golisano and (if she decided she was ready) Aisha Wright are a couple over west. It's a matter of preference. I think most would prefer if a two-year contract was in place though as it's a big commitment to move interstate for a season.

No football (bar NTFLW) has been played since the season ended and when the draft will take place (excluding perhaps a few rounds of SANFLW). So it's all off past form.

I believe there must be at least three delisting's/spots open for the draft.

It could be an opportunity for more SANFLW talent to nominate Victoria. There looks to be a fair amount of talent going through SA and the Vic pool seems to be almost dried up.

The west is interesting: T.Golisano, C.Wrigley, J. Stewart (I have a feeling she's not done yet), B.Hyde (Why not join her sister although she is playing SANFLW), and Bella Mann (The only WA talent left from the previous draft combine). Granted these are only early speculations.

PMBangers Pie 4 Life, hi guys any chance for a top 10 power ranking for the upcoming overage draft. I know there were a few names mentioned above but where do they sit in the next draft?
I'll be doing something in the New Year. I come back from break on Dec 29 so I'll be jumping straight back into everything then.
