Life's funny, in the space of 3 picks I've gone from having my 6th and 11th highest ranked players to my 16th (who I'm not taking), 17th and 19th =(
GWS Pick 18 - Harrison Oliver - Sandringham Dragons | VIC Metro

I really liked Darcy Wilmot in 2021 and I see Oliver as a player with many of the same strengths and then some, with his tenacity at the contest and opponent, a well balanced offense and defence game, and deadly left boot, there's really not much to dislike about him as a prospect, and with Perryman leaving over the trade period there's a clear path into the senior side for Oliver when he's ready.
I do love his ability to lockdown but I truly think Oliver is a top 3-5 kick in the draft which is something that will compliment our gameplan long term with his ability to hurt opposition teams in transition from the defensive half.

Pretty simply the best talent that fits the list left imo, with Hogan growing older getting Jack in now would give us some time to put the required work into his body for him to eventually impact consistently at AFL level. I've been pretty impressed with Jack's improvement through the season in terms of his physicality and all round contested craft, along with his week on week growth in the ruck in the second half of the year.

Pick 20 - Western Bulldogs - Ollie Hannaford
Forward/Mid

Wasn’t selected in the midseason phantom which goes to show how remarkable his rise has been. After the 1st half of the season not working out playing as a small rebounding defender, Hannaford made the shift forward in the 2nd half of the season and hasn’t looked back. He kicked 21 goals in those 9 games with 5 of those coming against Oakleigh in round 18 and 6 goals against Geelong in the Quarter Finals. He also made the shift into the midfield in the Grand Final after the ball hardly came down there and collected 24 disposals, 15 contested, 9 tackles including a bone crunching tackle that took Murphy Reid out of the game.
What you get - Blessed with high end pace and agility Hannaford is one of the quicker players in the draft with a 2.95 over 20m and 7.92 agility time. He plays the game with such a high intensity and in a physical approach that he doesn’t need many touches to make an impact. His pressure and tackling is elite and it’s why he always seems to be in the game. He has a good eye for goal and has shown he can kick them from all angles. His set shot goal kicking is also quite good and does have the penetration to kick them from outside 50 as shown in the Grand Final. He also possesses good overhead ability and has a very nice leap with an 86cm running vertical jump. He’s generally quite clean at ground level also making him a dual threat inside forward 50. He should have a bit of upside as well, as he’s said it himself that he’s never really played the forward role until the midseason shift.
Weaknesses – His endurance is potentially the biggest area he needs to work on with quite a poor time of 7.26 for his 2km time trial. However, he had an elite yoyo testing of 21.5 in the preseason testing and ran out the game well in the midfield in the final, so I don’t think it’s a big concern. As for other areas, his kicking can be a little untidy at times mainly because he plays at such a frenetic pace and forgets to slow down. I also think he needs to work on reading the ball a bit better from a crumbing point of view and reading the ball off the ruckman as well. But these are all very nit picky things.

So quality is certainly needed in this area and with the three tall forward set up, the manic pressure that Hannaford brings is needed more then ever.

PICK 21 - RICHMOND - Cooper Hynes - 191cm - Mid/Fwd
Cooper Hynes or Joe Berry was the plan here. If Joe got through it would have been a tough call but once he left the board I hoped that Cooper would be left alone, and that he was. My plan was working well.
The best and most accurate summary of Cooper, which reflects my thoughts exactly, was written by Michael Alvaro on Rookie Me Central,
“A powerful midfielder-forward capable of posting dominant statlines, racking up possessions and both scoring and assisting goals in bulk.” – Michael Alvaro
The 191cm midfielder/forward, co-captained the stingrays this year alongside Harvey Langford and played 15 games, kicking 23 goals whilst averaging 24 disposals.
He is a hard nut, and attacks with vigour and smarts. Tackles to hurt, knows where the goals are and also has a beautiful combination of athletic traits and ball winning ability to go with his overhead marking and cleanliness below the knees. He can easily win his own ball, knows how to extract a clearance and when forward, creates space, rotates around and leads into the right areas.
Cooper has excellent vision, composure and smarts, often bringing team mates into play with his amazing kicks or burst away handballs in front of said team mates to get them running away from the pack.
Unselfish and a team first player, when he builds his tank more there is no saying to what his ceiling could be in the midfield, rotating forward when needed.
This kid bases his game on his AFL hero, and has been learning everything he can from tapes of said hero……Dustin Martin.
With Harvey Langford having the year he did, Cooper has seemed to go through a little unnoticed…but not by those in the know.
Personally I would not be surprised to see this guy go much earlier on the night.

Pick 22 - SYDNEY - Jobe Shanahan - 194cm Tall forward
With this selection, I was going to move in a number of directions. I came close to bidding on Marshall here, but I really wanted to boost Sydney's forward half. Sydney's current talls at times can go missing and they really need someone to crash packs and Shanahan is the best in this draft class. While Armstrong may look nicer, I think Shanahan is going to do the hard work for the small forwards, creating a contest all the time.
Lovely contested mark player and moves up the wings to create a bail out kick. He moved into Essendon's VFL team and did not look out of place and kicked 11 goals in a three game stint. He does have mobility as well, that is an important trait in the modern day forward.

PICK 23 - RICHMOND - Alex Dodson - 204 cms - Ruck
I have loved watching what Alex has brought this year. Hoping he would choose football, and he did.
I personally am not one to draft rucks, I have said it many times, but I see Alex as the next gen of rucks, and a mile and a half above other ruck choices this year, and with a playing list in need of stashing a future ruck star into its folds, Alex is my choice here and now before anybody else gets the chance, especially with my next two players seemingly falling into the spots I want.
Alex had the choice, bball or football, his super athleticism from his basketball background shone through into his football play when he laced up the boots for South Australia this year.
After taking a year off footy and only coming back into it this year it showed how good he could be as he dominated the position for the croweaters.
His mobility around the ground and clearance winning ability, pieced together with his tap work and follow up work with tackles and blocking for the clearance show that he has a high in game IQ and an excellent starting base for a ruck prospect.
He averaged over 24 possessions and 27 hit outs over the last part of the year and earned all Australian honours.
Whilst all this is good, he will need to learn another skill or two, whether it be dropping back to help intercept and/or going forward to take marks and kick goals whilst also improving his tank.
But, whilst being a raw talent with extremely limited exposure, what he has shown is tremendous to say the least and he shapes as an amazing ruck talent with the possibility of having an enormous ceiling and maybe becoming the best ruck in the game in a few years time.

Pick 24 - GWS - Tom Gross

Midfielder/ General Forward
Harder choice than the first two picks but I landed on Gross with his athleticism just too hard to pass up for what I wanted at this pick. Essentially, we don't have heaps of midfield depth or many youngsters developing to eventually replace the likes of Kelly and Cogs when they retire, so Gross comes in as someone that's hard as a cats head at the footy and can burst out of congestion with his acceleration and raw power. There's elements of [PLAYERCARD]Toby Greene[/PLAYERCARD] in Gross's ability overhead for his height and tenacity at the contest, and he likely starts his career as a forward, but I think he possesses the traits to be a really strong clearance player long term

Sam Marshall
Sandringham Dragons / Allies / Brisbane Academy
I'm probably not as high on Marshall but he does possess desirable traits. He's a good runner and has the speed to break the lines. He moves through traffic pretty well too and links up nicely with teammates. I absolutely think he can be a complementary piece at the next level and there's no doubt Brisbane will match a bid for him come draft night.

Everyone is going to think they've nailed their draft, but Sydney really have secured two great talls with their picks. This guy has that element of defensive ability with great kicking skills. Very strong overhead and can cut a defensive press with his kicking ability. He really showed his worth in the game for the AFL academy, that is what really highlighted to me his ability, against men he did not look out of place, mixing great defensive ability with offensive flair.
My only thought on why he has made it to this selection is the fact BF drafters are worried about his concussions, otherwise he feels like the biggest slider in this draft class.
With these two selections, Sydney have potentially got two bookends for a number of years to come.

PICK 27 - RICHMOND - Jonty Faull - 196cm - Fwd
Well, my plan came to fruition.
The first of my new twin towers down forward is Jonty Faull.
No key forward works as hard as Jonty, up and back the ground, in the air or on the ground.
Has good hands but they could get better, works hard on a lead, leads into good ares and as a forward he has the good leading patterns down pat.
Is very good for a guy his size below his knees and will chase a tackle. He has a big hoof on him and a good set shot routine mostly ending in a goal as his tally of 27 goals and 16 behinds can attest to.
He works best as that high forward, [PLAYERCARD]Jeremy Cameron[/PLAYERCARD] style, working back to goal but can also play as that one out down in the forward line.
He has a bit of mongrel in him and will crash a pack, but also has a deft touch, with a little tap on to a team mate or spotting up better options.
Faull worked on his tank and after the late start to the year due to injury he showed up with bags of goals, 5 in his first game back as a matter of fact.
He has shown himself to be a big game player towards the end of the season too, kicking big bags of goals in the finals before receiving absolutely nothing in the grand final. The ball almost never went into the forward line and I have no doubt, if he was on the opposing teams side and in their forward line he would have kicked 6 or 7 goals.

PICK 28 - RICHMOND - Thomas Sims - 199cm - Fwd
Thomas is taller than Jonty and at 199 cm he poses as a KPF that can pinch hit in the ruck at times. He showed that he can do that this year as he played that role for the Knights and did quite well.
He has great hands and takes the ball at full stretch generally taking away the opponents option to spoil as they can’t get the high.
He needs to work on his goal kicking routine as he did miss some easy shots this year, but also has a big boot and kick some long bombs.
He has many athletic traits that will hold him in good stead for the future as he progresses into a full time athlete and he showed how good those traits are with a very good turn out at the combine.
He projects as more of a lead out of the goal square forward and plays similar to Tom Lynch (without the silly free kicks) but molds his game on [PLAYERCARD]Jeremy Cameron[/PLAYERCARD] and yes, at times this year, showed he has the tank to run up and down the ground when he helped out in the ruck.
So I have ended up back ending the draft haul with a forward line twin towers combination of two guys that should grow together and work well together for years to come.
In the end, I don’t believe Richmond will use all these picks, there will be movement, maybe not before the draft but definitely during it, I dare say they will offload one or more of 18, 20, 23, and 24.
Possibly turning two of those picks into one, and perhaps sending one into the future, and if they want to keep Sam Davidson (from the vfl team) at tiger land they may choose to turn 24 into a couple of picks, one a little later in the second round with a future to come with it.
I did this with a view towards what could be available at the top end of the draft next year as well, and if Richmond has a couple of first round picks there are some solid prospects at selections for the Tigers to grab, especially smaller mids with good ball use and mongrel in them. When it comes to building a spine i think the better prospects come from this draft, but as we saw many build their good years this year and push themselves up into high draft contention that may happen next year also, but at the moment, the top end looks very good then there is a drop off early.
I personally would have loved to trade a couple up to try to nab Armstrong as well which would be changing the last few picks but had to make a plan because of no trading, and i really do like Xavier Lindsay as a mid option that I did not grab due to the different plan I had in nabbing the running defender first when the rule of no trading was in place.

Thomas is taller than Jonty and at 199 cm he poses as a KPF that can pinch hit in the ruck at times. He showed that he can do that this year as he played that role for the Knights and did quite well.
He has great hands and takes the ball at full stretch generally taking away the opponents option to spoil as they can’t get the high.
He needs to work on his goal kicking routine as he did miss some easy shots this year, but also has a big boot and kick some long bombs.
He has many athletic traits that will hold him in good stead for the future as he progresses into a full time athlete and he showed how good those traits are with a very good turn out at the combine.
He projects as more of a lead out of the goal square forward and plays similar to Tom Lynch (without the silly free kicks) but molds his game on [PLAYERCARD]Jeremy Cameron[/PLAYERCARD] and yes, at times this year, showed he has the tank to run up and down the ground when he helped out in the ruck.
So I have ended up back ending the draft haul with a forward line twin towers combination of two guys that should grow together and work well together for years to come.
In the end, I don’t believe Richmond will use all these picks, there will be movement, maybe not before the draft but definitely during it, I dare say they will offload one or more of 18, 20, 23, and 24.
Possibly turning two of those picks into one, and perhaps sending one into the future, and if they want to keep Sam Davidson (from the vfl team) at tiger land they may choose to turn 24 into a couple of picks, one a little later in the second round with a future to come with it.
I did this with a view towards what could be available at the top end of the draft next year as well, and if Richmond has a couple of first round picks there are some solid prospects at selections for the Tigers to grab, especially smaller mids with good ball use and mongrel in them. When it comes to building a spine i think the better prospects come from this draft, but as we saw many build their good years this year and push themselves up into high draft contention that may happen next year also, but at the moment, the top end looks very good then there is a drop off early.
I personally would have loved to trade a couple up to try to nab Armstrong as well which would be changing the last few picks but had to make a plan because of no trading, and i really do like Xavier Lindsay as a mid option that I did not grab due to the different plan I had in nabbing the running defender first when the rule of no trading was in place.

Pick 29 - Western Bulldogs - Hamish Davis
FWD/Utility

Had a good season in general, but like Hannaford he came home with a wet sail to finish the season. After averaging a tick over 14 disposals and kicking 7 goals in the nationals including a 15 disposal, 11 score involvement game. Davis came back to colts level and collected 40 possessions and elevated himself to WAFL seniors for the last 7 games. After playing well in the first few games, he really started to kick off in the last round of the season, collecting 16 disposals and kicking 3 goals. Then in the elimination final, he went one better kicking 4 goals and collecting 21 possessions. After his team got knocked out of the seniors a week later, he went back to colts level and won the best on ground medal after gathering 30 disposals, eight clearances and 12 score involvements.
What you get – One of the best endurance runners in the draft running a 6.18 over 2km placing him 5th in the draft. He’s someone that uses this in game by working hard high up the ground to be a link up player and then pushes hard back often getting involved in possession chains. He’s also quite a good ball user and sets up play forward of centre if he’s not kicking goals himself often trying to get the ball forward rather than looking backwards or sideways. He’s also good overhead and clean at ground level and with that could potentially play in all 3 areas of the ground. Overall, he’s a very smart footballer and a very low risk moneyball type that is a very good chance of at least having a solid career. Though I may be selling him short, as towards the end of the season in particular, he really started to use his body and frame a bit more in the contest and with a bit more training this should only improve maybe potentially developing him into a full time midfielder long term which really could elevate his standing further.
Weaknesses – Whilst he is quite a neat and a often a good kick, he has a ball drop that makes me a bit nervous and part of me wonders how well that will stand up under intense pressure at the next level. It hasn’t been an issue at the level he’s been playing at least. He could also be a bit more involved defensively, at the moment he is very much an attacking player.
Needs – Davis is someone I would ear mark for a role on the wing and could be playing as early as next year. At the moment Williams is currently the main winger, the other spot is open season with only Freijah a future standout, but could be required down back.

- Christian Moraes - 183 cm - Midfielder - Eastern Rangers.
Moreas is a hard running balanced midfielder that can play inside, but his best work is on the outside, as his ball movement and distribution is very sound.
He is clean by hand and very capable and damaging around the goals, he is a classical goal kicking midfielder.
Knows how to find the footy and also is smart with where he looks to move the ball on to.
Also a very capable HFF and his forward craft smarts, is a factor in his good ball distribution, as he knows just where are all the hot spots to pass too, that forwards prefer.
Had a great game CTL in round 17, where he racked up 27 disposals and kicked 5 goals.
His running capabilities, he goal sense and his clean hands in the end are hard to ignore so at this juncture in the draft he represented good value.
Was tempted to go a few ways here with this pick, as I am mindful that WC have a few positional depth concerns and KPD is definitely one of the.
With taking into consideration who West Coast will have access to next year through the FS and NGA taking a tall this year probably made better long term sense, however I have gone with the here and now need and taken a midfielder.
Given that Whitlock was still on the board I wouldn't have minded taking him, also if I could trust the medical reports out of the AFL concerning Noah Marz navicular fracture, I would not have hesitated taking him with this pick, trouble is without that information its too great a risk

Absolutely stoked to get Dattoli here who was strongly considered for my first pick aswell. Dattoli has had a strong year playing well at every level and has showcased his best traits in every game he has played.
Dattoli is a confident player and very driven, he is surprisingly strong overhead who I’ve seen outmark key position players with superior hands and judgment which allows him some real versatility at the next level.
Dattoli has great skills on both feet and his ability to get his hands free and release by hand left or right is elite which has allowed him to play some stellar games as a midfielder and I feel Metro missed a trick not playing him inside more but it did allow him to showcase his versatility either way.

I am almost certain Chris will go Angus Clarke for this one, which I think would be a great pick.
There are also some pretty decent tall backmen on the board as well. And Gerreyn whom I really rate.
