Lando said post race that following close behind is difficult and it takes a couple of laps to work out how to navigate a lap with the loss of downforce and overheating tyres. He said he got it under control but by then it was the last lap and he ran out of time to try and get past.

LeClerc drove away from him, as soon as his tyres started to go off.

Sainz was miles off the pace, and never looked like catching Piastri, despite having tyres that were 4 laps younger. His stint after pitting showed just how badly Piastri had been held up, and how hard his own team had ****ed him over with the Magnussen qualifying debacle.

Yes, McLaren got their pit stop strategy right - almost the first time all season that they haven't ****ed Piastri over. However, they didn't go anywhere near fixing the damage they'd already done with the qualifying debacle.

As for Monaco... it's utterly impossible to pass there (unless assisted by blue flags), so there's almost no point in watching Sunday's race. The result will be decided by qualifying on Saturday night.

** OK... we should never underestimate Ferrari's ability to stuff things up, and lose the unlosable GP. LeClerc, I'm looking at you!
Hence why I said “hopefully he can plonk it on pole”.
I think Oscar is going to start making it harder and harder for the team to **** him over without being pilloried in the commentary and media, regardless of Norris and his usual whinge “he's holding me up” when he’s still a second and half behind him.

Yet teams want to have more scope for changing aero... something has to give, can't just have DRS as the only way to overtake. Teams having a lot of traction coming out of corners also ruins it because it prevents any chance of getting that fraction of a second on someone coming out of a corner, like you get in Indy car.

They used to do FP1 and FP2 on Thursday right ?

(obviously not anymore, but they used to I think)

Either way looking forward to the 1 hour race on Saturday, and then the parade/pit stop exercise on the Sunday.
It feels kind of weird though, having the race divided up into 3 segments, with the cars pitting for several minutes between each segment.

Ferrari have been really good on strategy this year.
Not last weekend, they weren't.

They haven't had catastrophic pasta-gun moments like they did in 2022, when they managed to turn LeClerc's certain Monaco win to a non-podium finish. But they've still had their failures.

Correct.

Traditionally, the Monaco GP coincided with Ascension Day, which falls on the Friday of the race weekend, meaning that the Grand Prix weekend was paused to allow traffic to move through the principality’s streets on that day - hence no track running that day and free practice sessions held on the Thursday.

While the Friday remains a public holiday, the tradition of opening the track on Fridays stopped in 2021 so the race returned to the normal Fri-Sun schedule of other races.

Had the (mis)fortune of visiting Monaco for a day trip in Europe last month.

It is exactly how you imagined it to be in terms of traffic, parking, ambience and prices.

Still, being able to see and touch in person the parts of the circuit that you see so often on TV is quite an experience.

If McLaren are still weak in slow corners (not sure if this is true anymore) I wouldn't expect them to see them up the front this weekend.

I would have thought they'd be strong around here. Isn't their engine mapping meant to favour slow corner exits?

Have a feeling about Leclerc this weekend, that Monaco win may be on.

I'd laugh if he won the race on Saturday, only to get pasta-gunned (again) during the parade laps on Sunday. A repetition of 2022 would be hilarious.

Glad he eventually won Monaco afterwards with one of the finest defensive drives you'll ever see (even if of course it is difficult to overtake in Monaco).

Watching that clip again, he only just came out behind Hamilton.

So the team had a bit of wiggle room to botch up the pit stop a little bit and still get him out in front. Unfortunately they botched it a lot.
