Yes my question also. From what I have seen at training he is a seniors player, if he can't defend he won't last in a Lyon team.

Paton was a defender in his overage draft year…all Australian back pocket.

That's right, I think he was a mid and got drafted after a move to HB.

He was drafted as an outside player predominantly. That usually means that contested footy isn't as strong in the skill set. His running prowess is so good that playing wing seems like a natural fit.

This writing off of 21 yr old Max Heath is uncalled for. Its a well-known fact that big men take much longer to develop - Marshall was only just drafted at 21. Moose has almost 3 pre-seasons under his belt and is starting to show signs in the forward line with a couple of big hauls of goals. Can't forget that Row was drafted 2015, debuted in 2017, and really only broke out in 2019 as a full time ruck - at the age of 25, 4 years after he was drafted. Played as a key forward in 2017 & 2018, which is probably where Heath starts his career hopefully later on this year/early 2025, 3ish years on from when he was drafted.

Heath is taking a bit longer by way of years in the system compared to Marshall, but certainly is far ahead of 21 yr old Row. Heath was taken in the same draft as the likes of Ned Moyle (1 game), Jacob Edwards (delisted), Alex Mirkov (YTD), Lachlan McAndrew (2 games), Aidan Begg (3 games). The ones with games were all out of necessity and got dominated, so compared to them, Heath certainly isn't behind schedule.

We just need to be patient, and honestly, there is no rush at the moment as Row still seems to have plenty in the tank and we'll always have another mature backup ruck whether its Campbell or another recruit after Campbell moves on.

He's shown some promise in the VFL playing limited ruck minutes.

He’ll likely start as a high half forward, effectively a third winger alternating with Hill or Henry.

Looking at Port's Outs and Ins, they wanted to rebalance their list with a lot more height.

They traded in ready to play players including:

• two rucks,
• one key forward/back/ruck
• and one key defender

So someone had to go, and they had a number of good running players that Bonner was competing with. So looks like he got the short straw.

Milney had the body of a Bogan from the local pool after 12 pre seasons and it didn’t affect him too much.
Clark’s muscle definition isn’t the problem, it’s his bad luck with injury.

Milney also played Forward Pocket his entire career and barely left the fwd 50.

Clark is a midfielder. I’m not worried about his definition or lack thereof, I’m worried about what he’s bringing to the table if his skills and inside winning ability aren’t there. Because that’s where he needs to seperate himself because all the others are better defensively.

He needs to give us a point of difference.

Paton strikes me that he has been playing without confidence since his leg break. Hopefully being thrown into the midfield improves his confidence and he gets a feel back to take the game on more. Before the injury he was projecting to be a much better player than he has shown , so hopefully he can get some form back.

His best chance of staying on a list is getting back to the small lockdown type he was before the broken leg.

3-4 years ago we had a different coach and direction.
Seemed Bonner was deliberately by SoS targeted after being delisted.
There is a reason they wanted him, I am not football savvy enough to understand their plans for him.

His best chance of staying on a list is getting back to the small lockdown type he was before the broken leg.

I think you are being harsh suggesting it did him no favours. He did get a few minutes through the middle, but he had no training or preparation in there. If he can get going through the middle in the VFL, it might improve his attacking game when he does play back and give him more strings to his bow.

I honestly think Port are a top team and overstocked with his type, they went all in to get some key position players to have a crack at a flag. There’s only so many spots for certain types of players and good players can be 3,4 or 5th in line at top clubs and still be a very reliable player at other clubs.

Clearly there are deficiencies to his game that meant he was delisted and also rejected by 16 other clubs during the DFA period before we picked him up at the PSD. Massimo D'Ambrosio is a beautiful kick of the ball, but Essendon opted to trade him because he just cannot defend at all.
