We swapped two seconds for a first. end of story. Fmd

Carlton gains McGovern and a future third-round selection from Adelaide, while Sydney receives selections No. 26 and 28 from the Blues as well as No. 40 from the Crows.
adelaide swapped 26, 28 & 40 for 13.

Clearly we overpaid for McGovern based on his output but it's not quite as bad as the headlines

It was also in a time where we struggled to attract anyone to the club.
None of this happens in a vacuum and people are quick to forget.

We finished bottom that year. NO one was coming.

Gov only decided to leave after Adelaide Camp saga and also straight out lies told to him to get him to re-sign earlier that year. He wasn't coming to us specifically, he was leaving Adelaide.

Having Teague on board and his previous relationship with Gov is what tipped the decision in our favour over whoever else was chasing him at the time.

Gov completely ****ed his back in that pre season game and hasn't been the same since.

Getting Williams was similar. We need to pay top dollar to get him across and it was seen as a brilliant move. He was going to move into the midfield and be our class going forward. A few years down the track and his contract is seen as an albatross.

Easy to complain about these in hindsight.

How many of the moaners had that view at the time?

Never wanted McGovern and definitely said we over payed. That’s a fact.

not exactly, we traded the non draft rights for a state league player (Shane McAdam) and 26 + 28 and an f5. Adelaide traded the two picks + 40 + f3 to sydney for 13, a pick they wasted on Ned McHenry

Sydney used the 40 on McInerney and then on traded the two seconds, the f3 bnecame Jake Riccardi

We also got F3 from the Crows

No, we didn't.

See
Semantics, we paid two second rounds for a first round to be sent to Adelaide for Gov.
Sydney accepted 2nds for a 1st which could have stayed with us, like the Smith trade this year.
Let’s not try to change the narrative to suite but that’s it from me. It’s done and it was a disaster of a trade.

It's not semantics at all.
It completely ignores pick 40 that Adelaide sent to Sydney in order to get #13.

Pick 40 is almost a quarter of the value that Sydney received.
By the DVI at the time, it increases the value of what Sydney received from pick 10 to pick 6!

I feel that is why it makes such a big difference when Jack is back there, he adds a sense of calmness and stability with Weiters and looks for the best passage out of defence. It also calms the running half backs.

Cowan is a good lock down defender and tough as well as Newman, take them out and we have too many guys as intercept defenders. Haynes has improved during the season, Saad is consistent, but the opposition have worked out to push him onto his right side. Doc will give his all but is losing speed but has improved with more game time and touch as he has spent a long time out. McGovern may as well be FIFO, 1 week on and 3 off, has been the biggest disappointment, imo since coming to our club, capable of brilliance but rarely delivers.
or you could simply say the defence is pretty good.

But, when the midfield goes missing, defensively (as it does too frequently), the defence struggles!

You can add Saad to that fact statement. :thumbsu:

I believe it. But you would have been in the minority with most disagreeing with you, right?

McGovern was over rated. Happy to say I was in the minority who didn’t want him. We had Charlie and Harry developing and Levi was at his peak as a third tall/second ruck. Wasn’t in to the hype back then and remains the case. Borne out by him ending up a “defender”. Nice bloke, conditional footballer.

Similar for Saady. Decent footballer, but was never worth the price we paid. A bit like Gov, in that the eye test is flattering.
I have some respect for Saad and has earned his pay. Just the draft capital he cost was excessive.

They would both leave a hole of sorts, but I would be happy to start 2026 without them in favour of the youngsters developing. It may take us half a step back, but we would catch up quickly.

Weitering, Silvagni, Haynes, O’Farrell likely starters, or at least 3 of 4. Young remains back up and draft F/S Harry Dean. Brodie Kemp still available as a swingman. Matt Duffy may become an option.

Return of Newman shores up our back half, Cowan, Carroll, Ollie H, Wilson and Charleson a good young group. Cincotta has more experience as has Boyd as options. Ison could be an option in that space assuming is drafted. Elijah H and Lucas C would both be options to try in that space. A bargain basement trade or state league addition would be judicious depending on the back half of our season.

Allowing the likes of McGovern and Saad to largely do their own thing has meant that others tried in defence have been relegated to dour, lock down roles and dulled their offensive edge. I am confident Cowan in particular
