Just missing way too many players. Cameron, Hawkins, Stanley, Duncan, De Koning, Danger.
I feel like their depth is actually pretty average.

Not really.

The only team of any note they beat in the first 7 rounds was Carlton. They beat Brisbane in a monsoon when Brisbane were really struggling.

The ladder at the time flattered them considering the strength of their opponents.
