The year is 2029, our midfield comp is TT, Hopper and Sharp. We're averaging -5 for clearance diff and get easily beaten on the outside because the 3 of them are very slow. This board insists we have use your no1 draft pick on a lumbering inside mid because that's what 'best available' always means for some reason.

The year is 2029, Sharp is the most prominent clearance winner in the game and with McAuliffe both SA boys are the envy of the comp.
They now have added strength with a mature Josh Smillie about to finally play his debut game.

See I can make crap up too 🤣

Interesting that with all the people quoting sources of having interest in players, it covers names like Sharp, Cumming, XT, Pou, Pickett (albeit later selection link on the latter two). No claim to any link to Robey. And even reference to Essendon coming round to “calling our bluff “ re: taking Robey at 3/4. Either we’re great bluffs, or, as I’ve suspected throughout, we don’t quite rate Robey in the top few.

I mean only Twomey, McGowan (the age) Cavanagh (hs), Jasper (espn), tigs, grock and Dontargue4 have linked us to Robey.

In fact the only poster with any credibility to not link us to Robey (and more specifically more linked us to only to Sharp) Is Tigerbob.

Genuinely linked us to, or has us selecting him in their mocks based more on general industry excitement around him as a prospect? Two very different things.

I know all the fans and all the media is 100% on the Robey band wagon. Doesn’t mean it’s due to any inside info from within the club.

Will be a super intriguing day night though, that’s for sure.

Random posters on internet = credible

Media guys taking to managers and club recruiters = not credible.

From what I've seen, Robey's a must-have with one of our picks if still there. We need an explosive mid that can mark the ball, and he'd tick those boxes.

Sharp will likely end up a fantastic player himself, but I'm not as desperate for him to become a Richmond player because of his lack in speed tbh.

There are a few players that impress me like Xavier Taylor, Sam Cumming etc., but I really want is Grlj. Something about him and Hotton in the same midfield seems so exciting. I want to know, what are the downsides of Grlj other than accumulation of the ball? Does go missing and struggle to get into games? Doesn't look like it on the stats sheet, but I want to know from those that watched him play over a longer period.

Cumming isnt South Australian.

Hes from the Vic/NSW border. Basically a Vic Country kid who went to boarding school.

Apologies, I misunderstood that point. So Cumming would fit into the normal geographic profile for a rd 1 pick for Richmond.

So it would just be Sharp from a go home state.

Fwiw I think Sharp seems to be the spot on player type to fit into our future midfield given we have some serious mid-forward power already in Lalor and Hotton, and a high class ball user in Smillie. Something along the Prestia lines.

Edit: A bit more clarity on Cumming, grew up mainly in the Riverena but has spent later school aged years living and playing in SA. Probably not a huge go home factor risk, so reasonable to assume Tiger recruiters will treat him as if he were a Victorian. Really, any Victorian should be accorded an extra level of respect by anybody at any time, so it goes without saying.

I'm not sure Robey is explosive. He's not fast and he doesn't really use his size to burst through congestion. Despite his size, he's generally a smarter player who gets most of his touches when the ball is in motion.

Grlj doesn't seem to have great game sense. He doesn't find a lot of it as a mid and while he is explosive, he often runs himself into trouble instead of away from it. It works at U18 level but wouldn't work at AFL level.

Whats wrong with having 2 Lalor types ?
I would be more than Happy to take him and pair with Lalor and giving the league a massive headache as to which beast to try and keep quite.
for me im happy to take our 2 selections where they are or if there is a NorF type offer we cant refuse then trade the 2nd pick.

CDT/ROBEY - Which ever is left at #3
Cumming/Taylor - #4

Only split if Bombers / Melbourne give up both their picks

Nothing wrong, just saying makes it easier to part with the pick, which would enable us to land 3 young guns instead of 2.
If the club rates Robey above all others, then we won't split no matter what and walk away with Robey/Cumming, Robey/Taylor, or Robey/Grjl.

Although there is noise that West Coast takes Sharp at 2, I think West Coast drafts Duursma and CDT at 1 and 2.

We then draft Robey at 3.

I think pick 4 is out of Sharp and Grlj. With the depth we have at half back and Trainor being told he is being moved off the wing to half back (and training there already) I can't see us taking Taylor. But who knows.

Cumming I reckon is a low chance.

Oh, Robey seems quite explosive from the middle whenever I saw him play. But I haven't seen him play that much tbh so happy to be corrected.

Ah, so would you describe Grlj as someone lacking footy IQ?

Gies talking up our picks and our readiness to bid.

How do you view this year's crop?

Gies: It's strong, we love it. We are really happy to be picking up the top.
We have also got pick 38, which is a good place to come back into the draft. I think there are guys there that can really add value. It will be just be a waiting game to see who gets through.

It has been well documented the front end of this draft with a really talented prospect linked to other clubs academies and father sons. How will the club approach night one with the top of the draft in mind?

Gies: They are quality players and we have been tracking those players for 3 years as well. If they are at the top of our list when our pick comes we will place a bid. I think that is the only way the system works. Those guys are certainly right up the top our order and it comes to a be we will bid and I think the clubs that are getting them are really lucky because they are quality players.

Do you think there is a possibility that we trade any of our selections?

It's on the table... you have to ready for the best outcome for the club. We have a lot of discussions internally and we are pretty comfortable picking at the top and at this stage we will be just picking at our picks, but you never say never.

Ghys; At the top of the order we go with best available player. When it goes deeper in the draft you then might consider list needs.
