Autopsy 2025 AFL Round 3: Saints thrash Tigers

Now I've always thought Tigers supporters were a decent bunch but after this week, what on earth is going on with them? Are the new batch of nuffies not accustomed to losing or something?

Walking home from the game I saw a let's say, 50 year old overweight Tigers supporter charging and throwing haymakers at a Saints supporter. I know that's an isolated incident but many supporters seemed truly angry and retaliatory.

Looking on FB and seeing the many Mansell posts, they are truly an angry one eyed bunch with a chip on their shoulder. I'm trying to figure out what happened to them, is it just a result of them tasting success and not coping with being rubbish again?

Jesus. He’s played a handful of games and keeps upping his output. If we’d had a single player during the Trout years with this kind of promise we would have had a festival to celebrate

Saturdays game was his 6th full game in Hugo's career. How much more time can we afford him? What do we want, players to have to reach double figures in full games before we can decide if they are a bust?

I thought that was a pretty dog act by Mansell. Pushed him into oncoming traffic, I can see why they want that out of the game. Of course there'll always be collisions and concussions but they want to get rid of the avoidable ones and that seems very avoidable.
I commented after the Port practice match that they were shoving the third player in a marking contest. Cleary power are coached to do. Bloody dangerous and cowardly because the player concerned can't really brace for it. I think that's how Mitch hurt his shoulder too.

I feel strongly that as a community we need to address the crowd behaviour and abuse that is hurled over the boundary (by cowards). The AFL is a passionate game, thats what makes it great but there needs to be a point where as a community we say enough is enough. That abusive behaviour often spills out after the game which is another indictment.

Locally its just a basic supporter attitude of our club, who they believe their own should be able to beat.

I watched the North vs Adelaide game yesterday and the Adelaide crowd hated the fact that North were competitive for the first 3 quarters and refused to be bullied.

Its not just AFL it occurs in a lot of national and international sports and its a poor reflection of where we are at.

Haha, I ask because at one game I was talking to a guy who brought me a beer and said he flew in every second week from Dubai... He told me a few things... closest to and ITK I ever knew.
I live in Dubai but don’t get to any games. And I’m definitely not an ITK. Wonder who your guy was?

It’s unbelievable isn’t it, he was playing his 12th game on the weekend and was bloody good. I could name a dozen A grade players running around that are one sided especially left footers

curious does TDK have both sides or just left ?

Another key aspect is that the non listed zebs players are collectively awful. Imagine how our 18yo would be going with a better side when winning simply makes everyone look better and pumps the numbers too.

I’ll be interested by BJs thoughts on the young guys. Just make sure we can’t get that sentence in that order 🤣

How do you change that? Is it a salary thing and we're not paying the $120k-ish that Sandy are entitled to spend, is it a question of serious intent to go far in the competition, or is it a series of intangibles or unchangeable factors.

Yes I thought the exact same thing when we played Port.

The Owen's injury was just one such incident.

So it is good for us as we are playing Port this week.

Hopefully the 3 week suspension does not get overturned.

But Mansell wasn’t tunnelling in a marking contest.

His eyes are off the ball when he decides to push O’Connell into the marking contest.

That doesn’t mean he had intent to hurt. But his intent to move his opponent into that contest is evident.

For O’Connell- he needs protection. He isn’t moved to the side of the contest. He is moved into the path of the oncoming traffic. He keeps his eyes on the ball and gets steamrolled.
The way he went down was terrible and he looked shocking sitting on the bench.
We just can’t allow that to happen.

If that's what they want, they'll have to ban contact. And even that won't fix the issue.

Sure, but when it comes at the expense of the fabric of the game - I don’t think it’s worth doing. Neutering the game to make it safe, will make it no longer Aussie rules.

This tactic is precisely one preseason old, so it's not part of the fabric of the game. If the Mansell ban stands, every club will coach the tactic out of their team within three weeks, and no one will even remember it by the end of the year.

Garcia looks like a gun. Has a bit of Libba, a bit of Butters maybe even a bit of Merrett. Can't see much Acres in him. We have a really good midfield now. Macrae, Steele, Jones, Clark, Boxshall, Garcia, Dow, Phillipou, Boxshall, Carroll and a few that are dual position like Henry and Wilson. Some quality, some in development and some GOP depth.
From a limited sample size I think Mac Crea is the missing link, loves his role and is the'Big Dog' to quote Paddy Cripps in the middle, something we haven't had since maybe Lenny.

Port off a 10 day break.
Rozee under pump for a quiet game.
Butters back.

If we play like we did last 2 weeks, we win.
Port don’t have the fight in em.
Fans want Kenny gone let’s do em a solid.
Fans have wanted Kenny gone for 5+ years.
I am going to the game, I have only seen one win at AO in my lifetime, hopefully Sunday being on no. 2 🥰

By who?

Mansells push did nothing, O’Connell was going to make that attempt regardless. It’s crazy that the AFL want to ban him for 3 matches for that.
So what he. Could have braced , could have changed direction. The
Playing the game is extremely dangerous. You can't make it safe without changing the fundamentals of the sport.
Pushing someone into a contest is not a fundamental aspect of the sport ffs

This is a weird response to my post.

I also evidently followed it up that no one is smashing him.

There is room for improvement to a really good game still.

There is room for improvement. He did lots of really good things.

To take the next step though the things mentioned need to be worked on.

I remember as a kid in the ‘70s how I had a particular kind of unpleasant feeling when a lesser team were giving it to us. Say Footscray beating us, or South Melbourne. One that stung was say Fitzroy, early ‘80s, and a week or two earlier, we miraculously managed to say win a game, or even draw one, and I’d be like, ‘Oh, yes…here we go! This is the turning point!’ And bloody Fitzroy would beat us.

Pushing someone out of a contest is a fundamental aspect of the sport. Full forwards do it 10x a game. Sometimes that push is going to have negative outcomes.

It’s a contact sport. And Mansells supposed push didn’t alter o’Connells trajectory at all. 3 weeks for that is crazy.
