Gather Round tickets snapped up in record time

The AFL is pleased to announce that more than 195,000 Gather Round…Festival of Footy tickets have sold… with five of the nine games sold out, 20,000 more than this time last year.

Member on sale on Tuesday saw a significant uplift in demand for tickets this year, selling more than 100,000 tickets in the first four hours, in comparison to the same amount in 24 hours last year.

This year there are an extra 47,000 tickets on offer for fans with the two Saturday matches being ticketed separately.

Tickets still remain for Collingwood vs Sydney Swans on Friday night, Carlton vs West Coast on Saturday afternoon, Melbourne vs Essendon on Saturday night and a very limited number of restricted view tickets and tickets for the Pepsi Collective for Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn on Sunday evening.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said it was clear Gather Round momentum was not slowly down.

“The demand for tickets this year was significantly higher than the first two Gather Rounds, with more than 195,000 tickets being purchased in the first two days,” said Mr Dillon.

“A ticket to the matches at the Barossa Park was always going to be one of the hottest tickets in town and the fans have certainly illustrated that by selling out both matches so quickly.”

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said: “Gather Round continues to exceed all expectations.

“We are honoured that so many footy fans from around the country are making the commitment to travel to our beautiful state to experience this event like no other.

“They’ll be truly welcome.

“If you haven’t got a ticket already – get in quick!”

Tickets for the remaining matches can be found here.

There better not be any discussion to extend the AFL GF contract at the MCG as part of redeveloping the Shane Warne Stand.

lol there absolutely will be. Its part of what keeps the stadium viable.
People should be anticipating it as such so they dont miss out like they did when anyone with half a brain could see it coming with the Docklands funding.

Except didnt the Docklands related extension include a commitment to rebuild the southern stand?

What do you bet the crowd for the GF will be exactly 100,024.
OK who were the 2 fans who didn't show up.
When they upgrade the MCG I wonder if they will shoot for 110,000 capacity.
They need to visit AT&T Stadium in Texas (home of the Dallas Cowboys) to see how they designed a stadium that has a capacity that can transform from 80,000 for home and away games to 110,000 for Super Bowls and college championship games. They do this by adding or subtracting seats in each row by increasing or decreasing the gap between each seat.

Was watching the broden kelly podcast this morning, and he said there were a fair amount of MCC members who didn't even turn up to the game.

That is one of the aspects for how that capacity at Perth Stadium is intended to increase from 60,000 to 70,000.

So basically they are packed in like sardines. Couldn't be a good spectator experience.

Be crazy not to try and go for 110k

Just not sure how easy it would be.
That would take it from the 11th to the 3rd largest stadium in the world.

Its interesting that there is such a huge cluster of massive stadiums between 100-110k, with only two breaking through that figure. Which suggests that its around as big as its possible for a field stadium to get. (though in theory a cricket pitch is the biggest field there is, so you would think you could fit more around the perimeter than say a soccer pitch, without cramming or elevating higher).

Its also worth noting that the two stadiums bigger, the Modi stadium in India and the first of may stadium in North Korea, have pretty dubious capacities, with the actual capacity for both likely being tens of thousands less than the official listings.

My understanding was part of the deal of extending the GF deal to 2057 was that the MCG capacity had to be expanded to 110k

From what I've heard about the stadium in Ahmedabad the space between seats is comparatively tiny compared to what we'd expect here. Which is probably to be expected given the average Indian is a lot shorter than the average Australian.

So you're saying if they don't approve the expansion, we can share around the grand final?
This is only based off my understanding of the deal. The other one was the works around Docklands which has been completed.

What were ticket prices like to the VFL back in 1968-71?

We all know there were massive crowds back then especially in comparison to the population to now, but could one consideration be ticket prices are a lot more compared to income now, and a lot more neutrals would go to finals back then?

Ignoring the obvious stadium capacity limit.

Fortunately for me, the ABS decided to answer my question on BigFooty, with this post on Facebook.

Imagine what AFL Grand Final attendances would be these days if the stadiums capacity was unlimited, and tickets were as cheap as 1970…

Would 300k be in reach? If you had 2 big clubs with an unlimited capacity I think it could be a chance
