The first thing to say is that it was disappointing to miss finals again. I don't want to use the word unacceptable but it was not merely disappointing: I feel strongly that we could and should have played finals. We were good enough, and we set ourselves up with a fantastic 4-0 start to the season. I think the disappointing outcome is in large part due to our inexperience, and partly due to deficits in our coaching and game plan and partly due to the lack of depth in our list. I'm not going to use injuries as an excuse (unlike in 2024).

And the second thing is: I have no confidence that we can do better next year. While I certainly think we will improve over the off-season, I think a lot of other teams are going to improve too. More than AFL, AFLW improves a lot from year to year. For instance, with their fantastic list, I rate Port as an excellent chance to play finals and maybe even top 4 next season. Carlton and the Eagles will also be stronger next year. Etc etc.

It has been remarked that our list lacks depth and I strongly agree. While we improved our depth a lot over the last off-season, we have a long way to go.

What has worked in 2025

Most of our off-season recruits were solid. Leaving draftees aside for a moment, I think Lulu Pullar and Jas Grierson have turned out to be the best. Pullar improved more and more as the season wore on. From the North game forward I think she became a really valuable contributor to the team. Grierson is no star but she is composed and uses the ball well and provides invaluable experience to the team. Darcy Moloney was the most disappointing. She has the talent but seems to lack application and her temperament seems really hot-headed. I think she could do worse than spend a lot of time with the psychologists. Van Loon is a gutsy trier with reasonable height, pace and strength but lacks high end talent. I hope she can keep improving. We never saw Brown but my concern with her is that she lacks maturity (perhaps defensible given her age).

As for the draftees: Zippy Fish is nothing short of brilliant. She is the most talented player at the club bar none and will one day overtake Chloe Molloy as our best player. Amelia Martin had a reasonable rookie season and has shown some promise. Reid and Steele-Park were free hits at the back end of the draft and probably will not last long on the list but made a contribution.

The game plan and our list has certainly improved and developed. Our defence became more sophisticated and we learned to move the ball well too. Many of our young players are starting to build up a body of games and look better for it. Exhibit A in this category is Montana Ham, who had her best season to date. Hausegger and Cooper also had strong seasons that give confidence they will have decent careers. Most of the rest of our list is under 25 and will also benefit from another year of training and playing.

Tanya Kennedy went to another level this year and, for mine, she was our best player. She really added a more offensive element to her game while continuing to apply more defensive pressure than anyone else (notwithstanding LG's high tackle numbers TK's tackles stick better and count for more).

We performed well under pressure against Geelong and especially against Carlton and West Coast. We convincingly beat those teams that were around our own level (mid-table).

What didn't work in 2025

We were too inconsistent. Dropping games against Pies, Giants and Essendon cost us our finals chance. Our inconsistency was by far the most costly issue.

We weren't flexible enough with our game plans and structures. While we improved our Plan A, we didn't have enough of Plans B, C, D & E. This told against North, when we were getting flogged and seemed incapable of changing gears and slowing the game down to stem the bleeding. However North are formidable opposition and possibly it would have been even worse if we had done that, who can say? Similarly, we didn't seem to have a plan to counter Essendon in the wet in the final round. Finally, Collingwood were pretty much on record saying that they had "worked us out" and our one-dimensional game style allowed them to come with a plan to beat us. It's unclear (to me) to what extent Giants were able to use the same countermeasures to defeat us the following week.

Our list lacks depth. Our KPFs, are not up to snuff. In general our forwards (bar Chloe when she's playing forward) are a weak point in our team. Holly has had a really strong year and hopefully will become a good player but at this stage she neither gets enough ball nor applies enough pressure. Grunden is ok and hopefully has a future. Ditto Amelia Martin, although she has a way to go. Priv had a very poor season (after a very good one last year). She is inconsistent and ageing (but I'm not writing her off). I'm not sure where Davies is at - but at this point I'm not sure we can afford to delist her, certainly not without getting someone better in and even then we don't have enough depth. Lexi was decent but I don't have very high hopes for her. Actually I have overlooked, Cynthia - she is quality and I'm glad we've got her.

Our starting mids are good but we need more depth too. It was interesting to hear Gowans suggets that Cooper could play through the midfield. Given Cooper gets so little ball I have my doubts at this stage. Morphett, Kennedy and Gardiner are an excellent starting trio on ball. Pullar is great on the wing. I'm less convinced about Sergeant-Wilson. Ham and Molloy can pinch hit. But we need more. I think we need another inside, ball-winning bull - an apprentice to Kennedy, preferably even larger (I'm dreaming of someone like Lucia Painter).

Our defenders have been good but not brilliant. BT had a relatively down year. Mitchell was solid. Van Loon was good but perhaps not good enough to have a really long career. Grierson was a wonderful addition. She's no star but she thoroughly deserved her selection every week. I think we need another quality tall KPD. There were rumours we might be interested in Zoe Prowse from Adelaide - someone like her would be a valuable addition.

Going forward to 2026 and beyond

We need to continue to develop our game plan and structures. I think we took steps forward here and need to keep going.

We need to keep our best players on the park more. We missed Chloe and Sofia this season. Of course this is only partially within our control.

We need to improve our depth. The good news is that we should be able to draft two quality players who are exactly the kind of players that we need: Alex Neylands (key forward) and Madeleine Quinn (super agile tall ruck-forward). I don't know how quickly those players will be ready to play AFLW (hence I don't know how long it will take us to become serious contenders) but they look like exactly the type of players that we need. Hopefully we can either get a pick in before having to match a bid on Neylands or, alternatively, trade our picks back so that we can get one or more extra picks to either use for trade or further back in the draft while still being able to match a bid on Neylands.

Our coaches need to consider what they need to do individually and collectively to improve. Do we need to turn over some of the assistants? Will Tanya Hetherington be poached and force our hand? I'm content to back in Scott Gowans, despite our disappointing season.

I hope that Matthew Pavlich continues to give the W program the attention it needs now that the men's program is in more need of attention than it was.

Can I just say how much fun it's been discussing all this with my fellow AFLW watchers. It's great to have something to follow and get the blood flowing in what is traditionally a bit of a black hole for the sporting calendar.

Yes, we really stuffed it this year by losing all our winnable games and should be in finals. But I think the girls have looked really good in patches and there is a bit of momentum to build on.

I've really liked the growth in Montana Ham's game. She has had bursts of brilliance and will be the key to us taking the next step by becoming our dominant bull. As good as TK and Gardiner are, they both lack that size and strength to really monster opposition midfield and are best as the support crew to Ham, if she can just become more consistent.

Our top flight players all were pretty good this year but I'd like to highlight the improvement in Hausseger, Grunden and Cooper. Laura was very steady down back, defending stoutly but also provided nice rebound. She's a good kick. Grunden played the medium forward position well. She was effective overhead and her ground game solid. She's also a pretty reliable kick for goal. Cooper proved to be a menace in F50. She's fast, tough, competitive and finishes well. I'd like to see her play short bursts on ball.

Of our recruits Lulu, Van Loon and Grieson proved to be good pick ups. Moloney started well but faded badly. Which leaves Zippy. What a star. The biggest headache she will give us is where to play her. She will definitely command on ball time next year as we need her hands on the ball as much as possible.

I invested a lot of myself into the W this year and have to admit that I'm seriously disappointed. I can only hope that the girls feel what could have been and that it drives their off season and their effort level next year.
It seemed that we did an awful lot right and at times it showed, so how did we lose (and badly) to three teams we "should" have beaten, and in the same way each time? Hopefully the coaches are able to find the remedy to this shortfall.
Thanks Calli for that excellent summary and SP for your work every week that makes it such a pleasure to visit this site.
My picks for B&F in order:
Laura
Tanya
Ally
Rising Star by far Zippy
Player's Player Tanya

Totally agree with you on Lara H and Sarah. Im bullish on those 2. I thought Alice was pretty good too.
The only thing I disagree on is Tanya. I think she's improved out of sight and is a more balanced offensive player also now. I think shes a beast and I would back her against any one. She doesnt lack strength and invariably stays on her feet shepherding the ball to her advantage and is everywhere. Her physicality stands out. And shes improving exponentially confidence wise.

Agree with your sentiments but would you put her in the top echelon of midfielders ( Riddell, Garner, Prespaskis, Marinoff) that can just absolutely dominate? I'd say she's just out of this group along with Gardiner and until we have one, we won't advance. Given TK's age, our best hope for one is Ham and / or Fish and I'm hoping both make the jump.

Gotta be honest I'm a little disappointed with Ham. Her best is stunning but she doesn't roll it out often enough for her to take the team on her back the way LG & TK do.
I'm amazed at what Zippy has done in her first year but she is TINY. Surely her best work is mostly on the outside.

Agree with this. Drifts in and out of games. LG and TK are our best on ballers. No knock on them but I can't see them improving to become equal to a Riddell or Garner and until we have a mid of that standard, we are not going to contend. Ham is the one with the size, speed and skills but is too inconsistent. Re Zippy, she is tiny but Riddell is actually shorter, albeit physically more developed. It will take a few seasons of bulking but Zippy could eventually develop to a lethal inside mid. Zippy and Ham could become our Riddell and Garner.

I think .maybe i can give her the benefit of the doubt in that its her first injury free season and i feel like that'll be her next focus as she appraises the season past and works to improve.

Ham isn’t consistent enough yet. But she does tend to play well when our midfield is playing well, suggesting she’s (still) reliant on others to provide supply.

She was one of our better players on Saturday - not that’s saying much. But in the second half she was clearly trying to use her physicality to get the ball going our way.

We have a ripper coming through as the under 16s mvp in the nationals Northern division but we have to wait a little. Shes also from indigeneous heritage. Emily Hollinsgworth. She qualifies for 16s again next year.i hope one day we see our 2 indigineous stars tearing it up for the Swans. I think we are going to have to be patient and hopefully get more of our very promising Academy talent coming through and get some national draft gems like Lara who was in the 30s in her draft. We should do all we can to try to get a quality Irish forward like an Aine McDonagh. Dig deep into what's available over in Ireland.
Im pretty bullish about the quality of talent in the next few years from the Academy.

I feel like Tanya is just getting started and easily has another 3 years of quality in her. Shes so fit.

The AFLW 2025 Club Champion event has been announced for Friday 5 December at 6.30 PM.

My tips for the BnF:

1. Tanya Kennedy
2. Laura Gardiner
3. Zippy Fish

It's hard to place Kennedy ahead of Gardiner as Gardiner is such an incredible workhorse in offence and defence and leads the club by far for both disposals and tackles. However, I feel like Tanya's impacts are often more telling and also she has more involvements that don't register stats. I won't at all be surprised if Laura wins (and she will be thoroughly deserving if she does).

I tip Morphett, Molloy, Ham, McEvoy, Grierson and Pullar also to feature in the top 10. The other one will most likely be one of our defenders like Mitchell or maybe even Hausegger as a smoky.

Rising Star: Zippy Fish (by the length of the Randwick straight). Somewhere farther back will be Hausegger, Cooper and Grunden (in that order, for mine).

The only other award that I am aware of is the best club person and I find that just impossible to pick as an outsider. You would think the captains would be great 'club people' but maybe that's taken as a given.

Perhaps the best club person will be Maddy Collier. Throw in a smoky of one of the Hamilton's

Drafting
I'm pretty happy with our drafting, we all rave about Zippy. And I think Amelai Martin showed moments. Caitlyn Reid actually impressed me - I think she was an excellent bit of insurance for Morphet who can get injured a bit.
The previous years kids, Hausegger and Grunden both showed devlopment.

Trading - less so
It's not every year you can pick up a Molloy. but seriously.
Davies and Hillier might as well have been on a paid vacation for all their impact. I'm unsurprised they've departed. But at least they only cost junk picks.
The 2025 intake was larger, and had mixed results. Grierson showed her best but didn't help with the lack of height down back much. Puller didn't fill an immediate need, but she was a very good addition. Van Loon was probably a break even, taking the injured Julie O's place. Moloney's return this season suggests we should have kept pick #22 and used it - had little positive impact in the middle or forward. I hope she improves.

Development
So many players simply didn't progress - Tanya and the Hammer excepted. And some declined, Privitelli's precipitately. 2023 was wonderful , last year OK, not surprised she retired. But with that decline and the departure of the phenomentally inconsistent Smith the cupboard was bare. Cynthia can be Molloy like sometimes, but needs to be more involved. Lexie is basically Lexie - not a solution to our forward line woes, but an OK ruck relief. Would we be any the worst if Paris Mc didn't return? Actually, has the Irish experiment yielded anyone of note (Tanya as already in Oz) compared to some of those brought down under by other clubs. The forwards were either too inexperienced or inadequate. The backline simply for overwhelmend. And the midfield lacked Sofia's polish. Tanyo doesn't do polish, Gardner butchers a lot of the ball (thank goodness she get's so much of it), and Morph's clearance kicks sometimes looked like she wasn't actually aiming them at all. And I can't see Zippy playing in the midfield anytime soon, it'd might be a bit like expecting it of Lewis Jetta.

Frankly we underperformed and someone was going to bear the brunt.
