Getting 4 of the top 6 favoured teams next year twice does not matter? This point is a symptom of our Small Club Defeatist Attitude. something we desperately need to stamp out. If Teams are good enough, stuff like this simply does not matter.
Is it annoying? Yep, sure is. Does it deserve this much discourse? Not really

Double up against the cellar dwellers makes or breaks your season. Extremely tough draw for a team that finished 9th. Unheard of really. We should have had 2 double ups from the bottom 6!!!Got unlucky with no double up freebies.
missing north, eagles, bombers and tigers. I guess Dees and Blues may fall into that category this season but unlikely
Yeah, that's the thing where people miss there's inequalities for the draw.Carlton finished 9th a few years back, got what was rated as the easiest draw and still ****ed it up.
We’ve finished 9th twice since then and have been reamed both times.
These 4 teams you’d expect would be favourites to be the top 4 next year:
Brisbane once - away
Geelong once - away
Suns once - away
Hawks twice - neutral & away
Totally agree with this. In fact when the fixture is released that’s what I look for, who do we play once but have to play them away. Last season Gold Coast got the dream draw from that perspective. They hardly played any top teams away, got them all at home or in Darwin and their away games were against North Melbourne, Richmond, West Coast etc etc…… it makes a huge difference where you play the teams you only get to play once, because if you play twice at least you get a fair crack home and away. The exception is gather round and last year we copped Brisbane but then got them again at their home ground, same for Geelong the previous year and now again same for Hawthorn.Yeah, that's the thing where people miss there's inequalities for the draw.
If we want to push for top 4, we want to be other interstate potential top 4 teams at home (to get the HGA) and be playing the crap teams that we should be beating anyway, interstate away.
We play all of Brisbane, Geelong, GC, Sydney away - the 4 most likely top 4 finishers per betting odds for the non-Melbourne teams.
We avoid GWS (5th favourite but they never carry a strong HGA anyway given their small crowds so we "miss out", then also get 6th favourite Freo away.
We then get Hawks away at the MCG with a true home ground disadvantage, as we rarely play MCG.
It's just crap. We get to play West Coast at home, Richmond at Docklands and not MCG, the two lowest ranked non-Docklands teams. Matches that if you get once, you want to get away, because you're likely to win anyway and you want the home ground advantage against other top 4 fancies, if playing once.
The fixture is so compromised with requests, downstream effects from requests, commercial interests and player requirements.Would love some transparency on how they do a fixture. Some of the things this fixture has shit out is so weird.
How do Freo (obviously), Collingwood and GWS all get the eagles twice? Three teams that played finals, but we don’t. Same with the cats getting North.
I get that we have to play the cats in Geelong, there’s no way that they shouldn’t come to Melb. The fixture is so compromised with requests, downstream effects from requests, commercial interests and player requirements.
Like I don't think it's deliberate we play in Geelong so often. It's just that mathematically it almost becomes an inevitability with every requirement the AFL has. Perth and Adelaide games in alternate weeks. AFLPA not allowing clubs to have more than one five-day break per season. The byes needing to be where they are. Not wanting too many overlapping Friday games. Not wanting to put North in FTA timeslots. Collingwood contractually needing 5 away MCG games. Us playing in Ballarat (when we do), always against an interstate team but never against Sydney (too big a Melbourne fanbase), or the two Perth teams (they complain about travel) or Brisbane if it can be avoided (Melbourne fanbase, couldn't avoid playing them there once). Ballarat can't be a night game. etc. etc. Wanting GWS and GC to play their home games against the big Melbourne clubs for Sydney and SEQ based supporters to artificially bump up their crowds and make them seem bigger.
So many elements go into the fixture that it takes what's in theory a 11/17 (65%) chance of us hosting any given team home or away for any of our 11 home and away games into far more compromised indirectly. For example, the fact that the eight interstate teams are guaranteed to play each other twice makes it marginally more likely that we play any Victorian team twice when compared to a fair fixture, which makes it marginally more likely we play down in Geelong. Rinse and repeat for every single fixture request/downstream effect.
Club should be asking for some answersI get that we have to play the cats in Geelong, there’s no way that they shouldn’t come to Melb.

2024 Geelong
2024 Adelaide

That’s just ridiculous. There’s no way that’s justifiable.
To be clear, I'm not saying it isn't ridiculous or it isn't justifyable.I get that we have to play the cats in Geelong, there’s no way that they shouldn’t come to Melb.

That's ok - Bailey is fixing the equilibrium, one misstep at a time... I suspect the interstate teams could also point to regular seasons where they also only get to play them once but always at Geelong. Fxxk I hate those pricks soooooo much!
They seem to get a pretty cushy draw most years and then people wonder why they always make the Finals. It is meant to be a fair competition but it clearly is not.The fixture is so compromised with requests, downstream effects from requests, commercial interests and player requirements.

We do play the Giants in round '1' at home. That is sticking up the dogs fans, we have to wait to round 4 for a home game and after 6 rounds we have played one home game.
Where do we petition a vote of no confidence in the AFL. I really like Ameet but the club have dropped the ball in allowing this to happen.
