Just further on this, I suspect it's just mental gymnastics we all do in the hope there's s quick fix.

Even premiership coaches on the down swing start loading their lists with hacks thinking it's an easy way to get one last hit.

I know i do it - see the profiles on DFA and think "oh wow 195cm 27yo 95kg, that'll solve a few problems" and pretend there's not a strong reason they're a DFA.

Sure there's exceptions, Keays, Membrey etc.

But it's almost never us benefiting from these bargain basement dips. 9 times /10 with our talent ID and team discipline I'd rather list a random kid than a 'failed' guy with AFL exposure.

We were on the money with some of our targets last year just couldn’t land them. Both Budarick and Serong would have been perfect additions to our team. I’d imagine we will go back to the well again for two way defenders.

Instead of Tsatas, I'd rather us go after some of Adelaide's depth. Charlie Edwards and Billy Dowling would be two good examples. Even Mitch Hinge could play a role for us across half back.

Had the idea floated to me as well that Jake Rogers from GC would make a perfect half back with his athleticism, tenacity and balance.

Are we kidding ourselves?

We are hoping to win 8-9+ games this year to show improvement, but does it really matter? Our list build has fallen way short. I think we would need George, Goater, Goad, Dawson, Whitlock, Threadgold and a couple others to come through and be viable senior options for this team to be good. And probably need 2 of them to be A graders to even think of being in contention.

They are! Who knows what they'll get to post-injuries but, we would be unlucky if 2 of them weren't bonafide, I still reckon 3-5 is on the table.

Goad (bloody amazingly fast and Tall, is playing well now in 2's), George (hard,fast,skilful), Goater (hard,fast,skilful), Dawson (already beaten the #1 kid in the game for 3/4) and also maybe Whitlock (skilful, not glacial). Imagine Whitlock's better than his brother once he fills out a bit, he's a child still.

The overarching question is who's to lead us next, if Al keeps backing in frauds who (even at their best) will never get us to a position of close.

That's the question.

Tsatas is totally worth a late list spot and say a 3rd/4th rounder.

We have zero midfield depth at the moment and his stats actually show a fair bit of improvement, particularly his ball use this season.
